Let’s put first things first. The Deadpool we have seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was not Deadpool. That was some weird amalgamation of Deadpool that looked like Mortal Kombat’s Baraka, with Cyclops eye beams and Assassin’s Creed retractable swords. This is everything you need to know about the REAL Deadpool before Fox does him justice in February. Deadpool’s published life began in New Mutants #98. He is a part of the X-Men universe though he is not strictly speaking a mutant, he wasn’t born that way.
Wade Winston Wilson was born somewhere in Canada. Most of his early life is unknown. His mother died of cancer, and his father was abusive. Eventually, Wade kills his father. Later in life, Wade became a mercenary. He fell in love with a prostitute named Vanessa. Soon he learned he developed cancer and thinking his life was over cut ties with Vanessa. This is where his life began again.
Wade was approached by Canadian government officials who said they could cure his cancer. Wade was then taken to a secret facility where he underwent many painful experiments. In some incarnations, the facility is the same Weapon X facility that gave Wolverine his adamantium skeleton. The other experiments had a bet on who would last. They named this betting pool the “Deadpool” and thus the legend was born.
Leaving the program, Deadpool began his work as a mercenary again. He has a huge advantage over the other mercenaries. Thanks to the Weapon X program’s experiments he has a healing factor to rival Wolverine’s though it came with a price. He wasn’t cured of cancer, but it can’t kill him. This left him \ horribly scarred from the advancing cancer. This warped his mind making him a sociopath.
Deadpool later kidnaped an elderly woman who would become a conscious and confidant. Most of his work would come from Hell House in Chicago. Soon he would begin a relationship with the X-Men’s Syrin. This would lead to a slightly more balanced Deadpool.
Deadpool would later work with many Marvel heavy hitters, like Daredevil, Heroes For Hire, the X-Men and The Avengers. He is even a reserve Avenger (Tony Stark said his membership card is in the mail, but it has never come. Wink wink, nudge nudge.) His antics would drive them all crazy, but he would prove to be an asset.
Let’s hope that Deadpool is another Box Office success so we can have something different and more adult oriented than other comic movies, even if it isn’t the first hard R-rated comic movie as has been stated. Though the trailer below certainly shows it’s well deserved as it is very NSFW.
