What We Know About Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

We are still a couple years away from the next installation of Pirates Of The Caribbean but we do have a pretty good amount details for number 5. First off, yes, this is the fifth installation set to come out in 2017 and will be called Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. After the disappointment that was At Worlds End, we need a good Pirates movie again, so lets see what we know so far.

Easiest place to start is with the cast. We have a couple confirmed as well as a few rumored to be joining, so lets see who we got. Well let’s begin with someone we all knew would be back: Johnny Depp will return as Jack Sparrow, Ahem I mean Captain Jack Sparrow. Of course this isn’t a surprise to anyone since he is pretty much the heart and soul of the franchise. Also returning is Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa. Newcomers include Kaya Scodelario, The Maze Runner series. Javier Bardem, Skyfall, will make his premiere as Captain Salazar. And young Brenton Thwaites, The Giver, will make his debut as Henry. Earlier this year, Thwaites revealed some hints to The Mirror of what’s coming: “it’s about a young man who wants to reconnect with his father, Davy Jones. There’s a curse that prevents him from doing that. I think it’s about how he goes around that and tries to fix it and he has to save his dad.” Which leads to many question about the plot that I will get to later.

But the question we all want to have answered is whether or not Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley be returning? Well we have some good news and bad news for you on that. Let’s start with the good, and slightly confusing news. Good news is that Bloom said during Disney’s D23 Expo the following: “I am, of course, Davy Jones now! So, I am down the bottom of the ocean. It might be, kind of, fun to do something where I am rumbling round the bottom of the ocean because I will not look anything like me.” Everyone rejoice now because Bloom will be back and as the captain of The Flying Dutchman, Davy Jones. But what does that mean for Thwaites character who claims to be Davy Jones’ son? Is he the son of the last Davy Jones? Is he the son of Will Turner‘s Davy Jones? If he is then is Elizabeth the mother? As of now we only have bits and pieces of that so all we can do is speculate. But what about Elizabeth Swan, will she return? Now the bad news: Here’s what Knightley had to say in an interview: “My time has definitely passed. I loved it! It was an amazing experience. But, I will not be going back.” So sadly, we will not see the Will and Elizabeth love story anymore.

Now we have to get to the complicated part, what will the movie be about. The official synopsis says “Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.” So that is the official story according to Disney but what about all the rumors? There still has to be more to it than that. So what of the back story of Davy Jones’ son? Well for that lets look at the timeline. Movie Plot is suggesting that the new movie might take place 20 years in the future and will focus on Thwaites character more. Answering a previous question, yes, Henry is heavily speculated to be the son of Will and Elizabeth. Thinks seem slightly cut and dry right? Time to add even more confusion because according to IMDB the synopsis is: “Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.” If you sadly saw Pirates 4 you may remember the ending hinted heavily at Jack Sparrow leaving to find the fountain of youth. So that would mean either the 20 year time jump didn’t happen or it took him 20 years to find the fountain. Also, it mentions Blackbeard so does that mean Ian McShane will return as Blackbeard for Pirates 5? As of right now he has not been mentioned or commented on the rumours so it seems not.

With all this confusion it seems hard to piece the story together, however here’s my theory based on what I have read. This movie seems like it will actually take place 20 years after the last movie. Seems like the events listed on the IMDB page have already happened. So Jack Sparrow has indeed found the fountain of youth (now they don’t have to age Johnny Depp). Javier Bardem was a pirate on Captain Jack Sparrows ship, after they found the fountain Salazar successfully overthrew Sparrow as Captain, it’s a pirate movie so there has to be a mutiny. This is now when Captain Salazar sets his plan in action to take out every pirate, possibly starting with Blackbeard. Meanwhile, Henry has been searching for his father Will Turner’s Davy Jones. As always happens, they all three meet and aim to take down Captain Salazar with the help of Blackbeard’s daughter Kaya Scoldelario (that’s a complete guess but it would be cool).

As you can see there is still a lot to speculate and we only have a little official news. Either way, this movie seems like a major step up from the last movie and hopefully it won’t disappoint.
