Unranked Roberta Vinci upsets Serena Williams, leading to all-Italian US Open Final

Unranked Italian Roberta Vinci has defeated the world’s number one tennis player, Serena Williams, in the US Open semifinal. On the other side, 26th ranked fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta upset second ranked Simona Halep in straight sets. This is the first all-Italian US Open final, but that’s only the surface of the historic round.

Pennetta was given a 200-1 line to win the US Open at the outset of the tournament, but Roberta Vinci had no line available, which likely means that nobody at all put any money on her. She even had a measly 64:1 line in her match against Serena.

Another striking statistic is that Serena handled Vinci in the first set, 6 games to 2, and broke Vinci’s first serve in the second set. Vinci went on to control the rest of the match with her unorthodox one-handed style, winning the second and third sets 6-4.

On the other side, Pennetta made Simona Halep look like a hapless amateur, winning 6-1, 6-3. Many expected the match to be the complete opposite, but the stars seemed to have aligned for the Italian.

You can see the women’s final (26) Pennetta vs Vinci today, estimated start time 3 PM EST, and the men’s final (1) Djokovic vs (2) Federer tomorrow, exact time TBD.
