Ahead of the release of his debut album, breakout pop crooner Charlie Puth releases a new duet featuring Selena Gomez. We Don’t Talk Anymore is a smooth, subdued ballad that capitalises on Puth’s falsetto and Gomez’s smoky vocals but never really takes off. The chorus features another earworm-y hook from Puth but unlike the cringe-worthy Marvin Gaye (Puth’s duet with Meghan Trainor), this song lacks the character to stand out from the crowd. Beyond the catchy melody, the song is just another run-of-the-mill pop song with bland lyrics. The robotic vocal delivery sure does not help.
It is undeniable that Puth has talent. He has a great voice but unfortunately, besides the memorable See You Again, Puth has yet to prove that he is able to deliver more than just cheesy love songs.
Puth’s debut album Nine Track Mind will be released on 29 January 2016 and can be pre-ordered here. Listen to the track above.
