What? Sony is evolving!
Sony has announced that it is combining Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment into one company. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) will be based in San Mateo, California.
Jim Ryan, the President and CEO of SCEE, announced the move on the European Playstation Blog. In his post, he described the change as “an important new moment in PlayStation history that will power the next 20 years of PlayStation innovation.”
“The formation of SIE will create an even stronger PlayStation. That means an even bigger emphasis on developing pioneering platforms like PS4 and PlayStation VR, world-class games from our Worldwide Studios development teams, and innovative network services such as PlayStation Vue.
It also means a renewed commitment to making PlayStation the best place to play.”
Sony Computer Entertainment was founded in 1993, a year before the PS1 released in 1994. Sony Network Entertainment arrived in 2010, with a focus on the network side of Playstation.
The change to SIE is set to occur at the beginning of April. The European side of Playstation (SCEE) will remain, but will be renamed to Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe.
Time will tell if this move is an improvement to the current structure. Personally, I would be happy if we could get a stable PSN with less downtime.
