In the first taste of new music since her 2013 album Prism, Katy Perry has released a new song, Rise in partnership with NBC and will be played before the NBC Olympics broadcast. The tune breaks no new ground for Perry and of the standard of her non-single cuts. It features Perry’s simple lyricism and a slow build to an underwhelming chorus. The message of the song, again, isn’t anything new for Perry but it takes more serious tone compared to her previous self-empowerment anthems (i.e. Firework) in light of recent events.
While the song itself is nothing to shout about, it does well to deliver a message of empowerment and unity. A video featuring a number of high profile Olympians including Usain Bolt has been released in the run up to the 2016 Rio games. Watch the video above.
The song is now available for download on iTunes.
