Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall are an American DJ duo collectively known as The Chainsmokers. In 2014 this duo had there first top twenty single called “#selfie” which hit number 16 on the Billboard 100, number three in Australia and number eleven in the United Kingdom. In October of 2015 they released there debut EP entitled “Bouquet” which consisted of the singles “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down” and reached number 10 on the Billboard 100. It seemed this DJ group was almost pulled from obscurity, and became a world wide hit when they released the single “Closer” featuring vocals from Halsey, which became the groups first number 1 single.
Andrew Pall was born in 1985 in New York City, and Andrew Taggart was born in 1989 in Freeport, Maine. Taggart was turned onto EDM at the age of 15 whilst being abroad in Argentina, where he was introduced to the sounds of David Guetta, and Daft Punk. The Chainsmokers originally consisted of Pall and former DJ Rhett Bixler, who in 2012 were managed by Adam Alpert. It was through him that Pall and Taggart were mutually introduced, and Taggart at that point had already been DJing and releasing songs through his soundcloud. When DJ Rhett Bixler left the group, it was then that Pall requested for Taggart to join, and the group started out by remixing indie songs.
The group then went on to collaborate with Indian actress Priyanka Chopra on the single “Erase” which got them onto the international scene. It wasn’t til 2013 when the group released the free single “#selfie” and after being picked up by Dim Mak Records it was later streamed and re-released by Republic Records, and the group achieved break through success as the single charted internationally.
The group signed a contract with Disruptor Records which was a division on Sony Music, and The Chainsmokers first EP “Bouquet” was released. “Don’t Let Me Down” featuring Daya was the lead single from the EP and became a world wide smash hit globally and quickly got the Chainsmokers recognition in the music industry. It was in March of 2016 when the song “Closer” was released, and this was the groups first number one single in the United States and 12 other countries. Both Pall and Taggart have said many times they have had no plans to ever release a debut studio album which caused much disappointment to many of their fans.
On November 4th 2016, the Chainsmokers released yet another EP entitled “Collage”. The EP contains both singles “Don’t Let Me Down” featuring Daya and “Closer” featuring Halsey which til this day remains as there only number one single. “Closer” topped the Billboard charts for 12 consecutive weeks, becoming the longest running number one single of 2016. It has been certified triple platinum in the United States. The fourth and final single “All We Know” featuring Phoebe Ryan was released on September 29th and was dubbed a sequel to “Closer”.
“Collage” is currently available on ITunes and Spotify now, and if you’re into EDM music it’s a must have. Although the EP only contains 5 songs, it’s collectively a EP full of smash hits and if this group was to release a studio album there is no doubt they would not only dominate the EDM charts, they would top the Billboard ones as well. Expect to see this group in the spotlight for many more years to come.
