The 5 Movies You May Have Missed

The Gift

Rotten Tomatoes – 92%
Box Office – 33.5 million

Of all the movies on this list this is probably the movie you have heard of most. Like me, you probably saw the trailer and scoffed and laughed at how generic it looks. Plus, Jason Bateman playing in a dramatic role? How can that work? This movie was a huge surprise and is a master class of how to make a suspense movie. Again, this is a directorial debut for writer, director and co-star Joel Edgerton. Joel is certainly not the biggest name on Hollywood but after this movie I will follow his work pretty much anywhere. Can’t wait to see him in Life with Dane DeHaan.

The gift is about a couple who move to California not that far from where Bateman’s character grew up. While out shopping he meets someone who claims knew him from school. Once he introduces himself as Gordo, Bateman starts to remember who he is. Gordo seems like a nice guy leaving gifts, coming over for dinner, setting up TVs and inviting the family to his place for dinner. But something is a bit off about how he seems to force his way into their life. Seems kind of generic right? This movie is anything but. As this unravels you start to question who is really the bad guy? Who can you trust? Is what you are seeing even real? Everything is so well shot and delivered you even lose Jason Bateman in his character, which has never been the case with him. It’s a movie you really have to see to believe and good news is that it’s not that old so it should still be playing at your theatre. If you want to not see Fantastic Four again go see this and see how suspense movies should be made.

EX MACHINA was pretty good with a moderately twisted but flawed ending.

The Gift was freaky, but even suspension of disbelief didn’t help this movie, as the probabilities of the antagonist being able to do what he did as part of a plan don’t jive.
