Spielberg’s Ready Player One has found its Wade Watts

Variety is reporting that ‘Mud’ and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ star Tye Sheridan will lead Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One adaptation.

Ready Player One is an Ernest Cline-penned novel following a young gamer, Wade Watts, and his pursuit of a lucrative easter egg in the virtual world called the Oasis. The twist? Whoever finds the egg, inherits control of the Oasis from its recently passed creator James Donovan Halliday.

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is attached to produce and direct from a Zak Penn (The Avengers) script.

‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’ breakout Olivia Cooke is already attached to star as the female lead Art3mis – another gamer Wade befriends in the Oasis. ‘Bloodline’ star Ben Mendelsohn is also set to star as the film’s villain Sorrento – an executive trying to take control of the Oasis for financial gain.

The casting of Sheridan is great on so many levels. First, it signals that Ready Player One is actually happening and one of my small dreams may actually come true. And secondly, it shows that Spielberg is taking this adaptation seriously considering how highly-touted Sheridan is; he held his own against Matthew McConoughey in ‘Mud’ and is poised for stardom following his inclusion as Cyclops in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’.

Ready Player One is one of my most anticipated films. Ernest Cline’s best-selling novel is a nostalgia-packed funfest that delivers on warmth and love and entertainment and holds subtle parallels to our tech-obsessed world. This is the perfect time to adapt Ready Player One. And with critically acclaimed stars like Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn joining the project, my anticipation only grows and grows.

Ready Player One is set for release on 30th March 2018.
