Evil Superman Arrives In ‘Brightburn’

Director: David Yarovesky
Writers: Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn
Stars: Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones and Meredith Hagner

Sony has finally revealed a trailer from director James Gunn, which gives us a story on a much darker take on Superman called ‘Brightburn’. What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With ‘Brightburn’, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy presents a startling new genre; he gives us “superhero horror”.

‘Brightburn’ is modeled after Zack Snyder’s “Man Of Steel”. This superhero horror copies the “Man Of Steel” trailer almost scene for scene. There are the shots of the wheat fields, the sunrise, the clothes drying on the clothesline, flowing in the wind and then there’s a score delivered very similar to Hans Zimmer’s in the “Man Of Steel” trailer.
The trailer ends with a scene of our evil child haunting his school cafeteria and its attendant. He’s wearing a red cape (similar to Superman) and displaying superpowers such as heat-vision, flight and super-speed, indicating this is how Clark Kent would be if he decided to turn evil. ‘BrightBurn’ is essentially a horror movie re-imagining of the Superman mythology. The trailer alone is full of shots that are clearly trying to emulate the iconic moments of the Superman movie franchise and its vision of small-town America.
