INsiders Guide: Host and Kuri

Host is a new electro pop artist from Ireland, where she has had national airplay and support from influential outlets like Nialler9. On February 18th Host will release her debut EP, but before that she’s released a new video for the lead track “Taste Of Your Love”. This single is full of dreamy synths and melodies, and combined with Host’s infectious vocals it makes for the perfect song. Host takes inspiration from artists like Diiv, Wolf Alice and The Japanese House as well as older influences such as The Cure and The Smiths. The synthpop singer had this to say about her new track: “Have you ever had someone you really care about do something so idiotic that it makes you look at them in a completely different light? Taste of Your Love is that lingering bad impression that I just couldn’t shake, and everything built with this person, this solid foundation, just turned to quicksand. It’s sad really… this idiot, that you still adore nonetheless, has now forced you to cut them out and change your entire life.”

British Columbia artist Kuri has a new single out called “Sort Sol”, which is a cinematic folk tune featuring the unique stylings of sweeping acoustic guitars and Irish laced fiddles. Though he may be a singer, he’s also a skilled multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. His talents have led to him being able to craft such a impeccable EP in 2018 called “Human Nature” and now on his forthcoming debut album. “I like to watch, analyze, and create systems in my brain,” he affirms. “As a solo artist, I enjoy the freedom to express exactly what I want by drawing on what I see.”

Born and raised Scott Currie was the youngest of four brothers, mom bought him a drum set to jam with his guitarist siblings. Soon, he transitioned from behind-the-kit to an old piano in the house by the age of twelve. After featuring on a few bands in high school, he caught the eye of many when he competed in “B.C.’s Best teen Band” competition. Following an amicable split, he began writing under the name Kuri in 2017. Influenced and inspired by artists ranging from Robert Glasper and Radiohead to Africa’s Tinariwen and composer John Cage, he arranged an expansive palette informing his signature sound. “Every instrument has its own language,” he goes on. “I try to hone the language of each one. It helps articulate the overall goal.”

After entering the CBC Searchlight competition, his songs caught the attention of Nevado Music, and Kuri signed to the label during 2018. Now, Human Nature strains emotion through his analytical approach.

“I don’t necessarily process everything that happens to me from an emotional standpoint because I’m so analytical,” he explains. “The EP is me going through deep situations with relationships, loss of identity within community, and things like that. I’m trying to process from a third-party perspective rather than simply saying, ‘Woe is me. This is how I feel’.”
