Exclusive Interview with Lourdiz On Her New Single “Ground Control”

Navigating in a realm primarily dominated by males, 18-year-old San Antonio-bred singer/songwriter Lourdiz unapologetically lays her claim in some of that dominance with her latest single “Ground Control” ft. Puerto Rican lyricist Jon Z.

Lourdiz’ experimental vocal styling’s and genre-blending instrumentals make her rap/R&B project refreshingly unique, pulling influence from both her family’s Mexican heritage and Texas’ rich music culture. Despite her age, Lourdiz possesses an intricate collection of life experiences, fueled by a passion for the hustle. Two years ago, she became a permanent resident of LA after a car wreck stranded her and her family just hours following her signing with Dr. Luke’s Prescription Songs. Hitting the ground running, she quickly worked her way into rooms with heavyweight artists, writing for the likes of Anitta, G-Eazy, R3HAB and more.

Ground Control” serves as the third single release ahead of her upcoming project due out this summer 2020.

Hello Lourdiz, welcome to OLC! It’s an absolute pleasure to have you here. How have you been, and how have you been coping with this whole lockdown situation?

L: I’m doing well thank you! My parents and I drove back home to Texas to be around family during this time. It was just us in LA. I’m kinda moving around at the moment and I’ve been working on music here and there so that’s keeping me busy.

So tell me about your musical journey. How did you discover your passion for music and who inspired you growing up?

L: I was always singing when I was little and after I found out you could write your own music, I make my first song when I was 15. Music was full time for me after that! I would have to say Shakira and Lil Wayne were my favorite growing up.

You’ve written for a lot of huge name artists including G Eazy and R3HAB, to name a few. When your writing songs for other artists do you still write about your own personal experiences or do you recreate the artists stories?

L: I try to recreate the artist stories without being too specific but still relatable for them. I definitely save my personal experiences for my music.

Out of all the songs you’ve written which one means the most to you and why?

L: I wouldn’t say I have a favorite, I feel like all 3 of the songs I’ve put out so far were all different emotional states I was in at the time when I wrote them

Let’s talk about the new single “Ground Control”, what inspired this song and how did the collaboration with Jon Z come about?

L: This song was inspired by me trying to find balance as a person…having “ground control.” My team is pretty legit so they hit Jon Z back when “Go Loko” was hot. Love his voice and his energy so much! I got a call to come to the studio one night in LA, Jon Z pulled up, wrote a verse, recorded it, and we bumped it a couple times.

I heard there’s a music video on the way for the song, can you tell me a bit about it?

L: With everything going on in the world right now, we decided to make an animated lyric video that’s dropping real soon but we’ve also got plans to shoot another music video with Jon Z whenever we can

You also have a project coming out this year, is it an EP? And what can your fans expect from it?

L: We’re planning to put something out in the Fall but so much can happen in a day, we’re taking it song by song right now. I’m excited for fans to hear all parts of my voice.

What does the rest of 2020 hold for you?

L: It’s all God’s plan lol
