INsiders Guide: AJ Mitchell, Ebony Buckle, OMI, Sam the Astronaut, Sam the Astronaut, MABES, The Lagoons, Cooper Phillip, Heather Mae and Crys Matthews, BlissBliss, Cloe Wilder…

Ebony Buckle is a London-based singer/songwriter, originally from the tropical seaside town of Townsville, Australia. Taking listeners on a whimsical leftfield-pop journey with her complex harmonies and imaginative storytelling lyricism, Buckle sings about universal themes of romance and broken hearts to more poetic themes of disgruntled mermaids, lonely whales and joyous, hypothetical alien invasions.

Over the last couple of years, Buckle has realised that in order to create an authentic narrative and preserve her unique creative style, she had to make her own music. She confides, “I am a naturally shy person and sometimes find it hard to be myself in front of other people, but music has really helped me connect to my true self. I feel like the songs I write come straight from my inner dialogue and they are a true expression of who I am”. She writes and performs with her husband, musician Nick Burns, who also produces her music.

Her latest single “Ghost” details the heart-wrenching experience that Buckle and her English husband Nick endured during their fight to renew her visa after their marriage. Despite her specific experience, Ghost is a universal song of love, loss, commitment and pain of feeling utterly helpless. “Ghost” was written over Skype between her and her newly-wed husband, as they were kept apart for nearly two years. It was a time in their lives when normality was turned upside down, and they were put in limbo.

Developing an immeasurable sense of depression due to the separation, the couple couldn’t plan for any future and during this time had no end date to look forward to together. It was in this difficult time, Buckle and Nick wrote “Ghost”. The song acted as not only a healing mechanism, for their pain and loss; but allowed them to move forward together – with something beautiful that they had created during their separation. Sonically, “Ghost” builds from delicate, sweeping soundscapes into a dramatically haunting release, soaring with atmospheric harmonies and organic instrumentation.

The stunning visuals for “Ghost” showcase the debilitating feeling of being completely alone and empty of anything except heartache. Buckle explains how the video is a way of finally letting go of those traumatic days, revealing, “It’s a very raw video and for a while, I felt too embarrassed to put it out. We do not talk openly about mental health issues in society, and it made me feel very vulnerable. I have come to believe that having these conversations and allowing yourself to be vulnerable only makes you stronger in the long run. I think it shows a different side of me. We are all made up of light and dark and I think perhaps we need to know that everyone has their own unique dark moments, worth expressing.” Hoping to represent the feeling of endless monotony, the video depicts waking up, feeling numb, being caught in a cycle of pain and allowing the day to carry on without you being truly present.

Reminiscent of Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap and Kate Bush, Buckle is inspired by strong female artists who have forged their own path into the music industry. Aspiring to create music which will help others realise their most authentic self and encouraging people to always take life with a strong sense of optimism but also to develop that confidence to face reality when it may not be what you have planned. Buckle confides “I hope it inspires people to be true to who they are. To not be afraid of being different and to know it’s ok to express themselves and how they feel”.

The singer come actress has performed in The West End and on screen for the BBC. Her role in George Gently as a Geordie folk singer gave her the platform to perform her vocal talents and her music from the show reached number 1 in the iTunes World Music Charts. Buckle continues to have her original music receive extensive airplay from numerous BBC stations across the nation, garnering her considerable blog attention. Every day, through her lyricism, music and poetry, Buckle continues to feed our imagination with her beautifully kaleidoscopic music. Come along for the ride – her unique world is completely enchanting.

Multi-platinum Jamaican artist OMI knows his way around a summer anthem. The Felix Jaehn remix of his timeless smash hit “Cheerleader” was dubbed as “2015’s Song Of Summer” (Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire) and has accumulated over 1 Billion streams on Spotify, and over 1 Billion views on YouTube to date. His new single “Bring My Baby Back” brings that same energy with it’s infectious reggae-pop Island vibes that calls for days spent at the beach, block parties and backyard BBQ’s.

OMI joined Fox5 Good Day NY on Thursday June 4th for a Zoom interview with anchor Lori Stokes to talk about the new single and life during COVID. He also performed a special a cappella piece of “Cheerleader” while on the broadcast.

When asked about the inspiration behind the song, OMI shared, “‘Bring My Baby Back’ was basically just a vibe. While I was in studio in London with Skye Adams and Reggie and Bollie, they said they had this concept that they thought would work well with me, so I said ‘lets do it’! The song is about searching every corner of the Earth for your lost love, but the upbeat production gives it a fun dancefloor vibe.” He adds, “I just love creating great music for my fans, so I hope they feel and enjoy this… maybe we’ll see some ‘Bring My Baby Back’ dances on Tik Tok!”

Accompanying the single release, OMI also dropped an incredible 2D animated video to further immerse fans into the summer spirit. The vibrant “Bring My Baby Back” visual was produced by GuGu Productions, directed by Luca Comelli e Giulia Mavillonio, and illustrated by Isabella Bersellini, Alice Chen, and Francesco Orsi (Bears).

Midnight Carlight” is the lead single off our upcoming sophomore album.

Listen on Apple Music and follow/like us on SpotifyInstagramTwitter and Facebook. Be sure to check out our live performance video of “Midnight Carlight” on YouTube (did someone say scream solo?)

The song is about feeling trapped in a relationship and the doubt that comes from that. If it’s harder than the last one, why should the relationship continue? What’s the gain when there is so much pain? It’s the frustration of wanting something so bad, but it’s continually getting harder.

The beat for this song was recorded on New Years Eve 2017 – just a drum machine, chords, the bass line, and the “meow” sound. TJ was standing outside of a friend’s house party when he had this strong gut feeling that he needed to go home and record an idea circulating in his mind. We were also so stoked to have legendary Canadian soul vocalist Dawn Pemberton on the recording; singing the chorus together was absolute magic.

It’s really quite a journey of a song. We hope you pull something different away each time you listen!

Rising British folk-pop artist MABES made an unforgettable entrance with her 2019 album Wait & See. Primed for stardom, the magnetic singer-songwriter’s debut – which includes smash hit “America” – garnered over 20 million collective streams in less than 12 months. Following a slew of releases this year and a taste of TikTok virality, MABES unveiled her marvelous EP Keeping the Noise Down and new single “Might As Well” via The Other Songs / Amuse on May 29, 2020. Today she shares the whimsical visual medley and talks further with American Songwriter on how the four song EP transformed into one collective piece of art representative of her teenage years – READ HERE.
MABES says: “I realized I wanted to create something abstract and thought-provoking that would be digested like one piece of art or a short movie. I wanted each song to represent part of me through my teenage years but all link to each other as a body of work, a ‘fly on the wall’ view into my world. [For example] ‘Keeping The Noise Down’ is a song about me being at a party and feeling very out of place and uncomfortable, and it felt like the perfect setting for a story to evolve. You see music videos where young people are partying and having the time of their lives – it’s almost shoved down our throats to drink, dance, and be happy! But you don’t see the self-conscious or awkward people that don’t enjoy that environment. I wanted to open that conversation, and maybe bring some comfort to those people, to let them know you don’t have to be at the party to be cool – which is a message running through the last scene as I leave.”
Describing her sound as “honest” with “a country twang influenced by pop,” MABES first picked up the guitar at 15 and learned to write by mirroring British act Laura Marling’s folk-poetry. Though oceans away in the UK, MABES developed an admiration for American artists and credits Carole King, Joni Mitchell, John Mayer, and The Smiths as some of her influences. With nearly 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, she’s been featured on their Easy, Fresh & Chill, Hot Acoustics, Mellow Pop, Very Nearly Nashville, and Sad Songs playlists as well as New Music Friday (UK) while Apple has featured her releases on Acoustic Chill, Breaking Singer-Songwriter, Mellow Days, Relax, Today’s Acoustic, and more.
The new EP, written partly in Nashville last year, is a pure reflection of her interest in Americana and folk music as well as a nod to the community she fell in love with during her time there. Each song on the EP is outfitted with poignant lyrics, rooted in folk sensibilities and wrapped with impeccable sincerity. The title track, “Keeping the Noise Down,” was co-written with Jonny Latimer (Ellie Goulding, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man) and bubbles with pop potential as MABES opens a dialogue about social anxiety amid warm guitar chords and irresistible electronics. The second track, “Stuck in the Rain,” was co-written with Dan McDougall (Noel Gallagher) and tells a whimsical tale of hope and endurance. Other songs to complete the body of work include the guitar-heavy “Slow Drowning” and the new single “Might As Well,” an infectious, mid-tempo slow-burner, featuring a breezy, anthemic chorus and luscious horns.
“Might As Well” (co-written and produced with artist Quarry) arrives immediately after MABES’ eye-opening experience with cyberbullying. Her 2019 single “America” was coincidentally featured on a popular TikTok video, resulting in thousands of comments falsely accusing the Essex, UK-born artist of being a “Republican Halsey” across her social media and YouTube channel. Approaching this unfortunate onslaught with grace, MABES provided a comedic response on her Instagram which converted online trolls into supporters and additionally inspired a fan club (aka the Mabies) in just under a week. The final track to be revealed seems more timely now, as MABES reflects on the pressures of social media and the challenges she faces with it. On the track she confesses, “Stuck in this place / with my reputation / They know my name / some of them claim to know my information… / Might as well / try to be someone else / It’s hard as hell / wishing I was someone else.”
MABES elaborates on the EP: “I was the ‘new girl’ 3 times throughout my school years, and every time I started somewhere new I thought ‘this will be the time I find my real friends.’ But no matter what, other kids my age were just very different to me. I questioned who I was, what I believed in, and wondered why no one else thought as deep about things as me. I couldn’t find that place where I was comfortable, or where I belonged. My friends were shallow and I couldn’t see the good in anything. The songs in my Keeping The Noise Down EP are a reflection of those times and how it was for me.” She continues, “Although it was a painful time, it’s actually shaped me to be a better, more understanding person in adulthood. For that, I’m glad. Now I’m on a mission to help people out there that feel like I did – ‘the new girl’ – realize they’re not alone and that there’s quite a few of us that just want to keep the noise down…”
MABES’ forward-thinking, emotionally raw songwriting style has led to relatable, cutting-edge intelligent pop that marks her as a unique new artist. With her dreamy vocals and an air of timeless authenticity, there’s no doubt MABES is cementing herself as a global entity and an artist to watch.

We are contacting you to share “So Did I,” taken from our debut album, Midnight Afternoon, out June 23rd. We worked extremely hard over the past year and we hope this album will help spread peace, love, and joy.

So Did I” is a love song about the strength of the connection between a mother and a daughter versus the strength of the love of two partners. It’s about the transition of growing up and finding someone to create your own family with – leaving home, finding love, and the evolution of that happening all over again.

Like the rest of our debut album, “So Did I” was entirely written, recorded, performed and produced by the two of us in our home studio. Midnight Afternoon is an album guided by reflection and introspection created for you to share with those you love.

The world we’re living in currently can make it seem like even when we’re connected and in love, we’re alone but somehow even when we’re alone and we don’t have love, we’re still connected.

Thank you for listening,

Russian born, Los Angeles based pop soul artist Cooper Phillip succeeds in capturing the undivided attention of listeners across the globe. With her intense drive, soaring vocals and passionate songwriting, Phillip is elevating herself to the top of her genre.

Born in a small town in Russia to a family of accomplished classical musicians, her early years were shaped being raised by her grandmother and aunt while her mother, a master violin player, toured around the world with various symphonies. This separation led Phillip to take comfort in music where she was enamoured  by the vocal stylings of Ella Fitzgerald. A young Phillip taught herself Fitzgerald’s songs inside and out, noticing every nuance of phrasing and jazz intonations. Phillip eventually enrolled at the prestigious Moscow State Classical Academy where she studied classical piano, music theory, harp, jazz, blues, ballet and voice. The songstress worked diligently to expand her vocal range and control, taking everything that came in her path and feeding off of the challenge.

Recognizing her daughter’s talent and charisma, Phillip’s mother gave up her flourishing career to accompany a young Cooper on tour throughout Russia. Determined to pursue an international career in music, Phillip moved to New York City at the age of 17. With barely a dollar to her name, the singer worked and hustled, performing in weddings and clubs and sleeping in the storeroom of a restaurant where she sang. It wasn’t easy but she would not be deterred. After a few years in the city, Phillip jumped at an opportunity to sing at an important gig in Los Angeles. She never went back.

Phillip’s music features an underlying theme of strength, grace and empowerment. “I believe we underestimate ourselves often and our fear takes over. My goal is to show people that they are stronger and can do much more than they think they can”, she admits. Using true life stories, hardships and experiences, the songwriter emits authenticity and courage throughout her music.

Cooper Phillip has seen success with her previous single garnering over 10 million listens online. She has also developed an impressive and loyal fanbase, particularly on social media and has performed at some of Los Angeles most prestigious venues.

HEATHER MAE

Unfazed by what a typical pop artist today is “supposed” to look like and how the typical pop artist is “supposed” to sound, Heather Mae, an award-winning songwriter whose evocative vocals and rhythmic piano style call to mind artists like Stevie Nicks and Sara Bareilles, creates intoxicating music that tackles complex topics surrounding mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, self-love, racial injustice, social inequality, and women’s rights. Inspired by her own personal experiences and identities – a queer, plus size woman living with Bipolar Disorder – and those of her multifaceted fans with whom she has forged connections throughout her many years of touring across the United States, Mae crafts powerful lyrics and unforgettable music about life’s moments–from the quietly chaotic to the explosive.

In 2016, after an eight-month period of silence to recover from vocal nodules, Mae made a vow: she would dedicate her career to solely write music that made the world a better place. Her independently-released debut EP I AM ENOUGH, which reached #58 on iTunes Pop Album charts, was her announcement to the world. Mae, who was dubbed “the new queer Adele” by L-Mag,  envelopes her audience with a message of hope.

Her newest project, GLIMMER, is a collection of nine songs supporting one central theme:” Feel To Heal.” Within the grooves of the new album, Mae wrestles with the complexities of existing as a human with mental illness. From her #MeToo-inspired feminist anthem “Warrior,” featuring a choir of 100+ female vocalists, to “You Are My Favorite”, a love song written for her wife inspired by her own wedding vows which will surely be the 2019 wedding soundtrack for LGBTQ+ couples, Mae shows she’s nothing less than a powerhouse. She has examined her struggle with Bipolar Disorder from every angle in order to create her most sonically adventurous set of recordings yet–and to remind us that we aren’t alone.

Our friendship taught me so much and even though it hurt to lose her, I’m grateful for all of the lessons I learned along the way. I’ve come to accept that we were only meant to be in each other’s lives for a short while.”

Birmingham, UK born artist SC.Undercover started creating music as a way of escapism from what, at one point, seemed to be a permanent road to severe depression and addiction. The mysterious crossover artist blends influences of indie, dark pop and R&B, offering something distinctly unique and relatable in today’s industry. With the release of an EP approaching SCU looks to showcase his talent and story on a global scale.

The highly anticipated single “Morals” follows directly on from his previous release “Darkness Before Life.” SCU tells the story of a character scarred by the darkness of his past, admitting his faults and showing his regret for the decisions made in his life, whilst seeking closure in a new world. He explains, “It was important to me for this to feel and sound different from the last single but have a connecting story.”

“Morals” emanates elements from the UK garage, pop and drum & bass scene that SCU was exposed to growing up, while simultaneously delivering a commercial and universal sound. Gearing towards his urban side of expression, “Morals” highlights his impressive falsetto vocals, fast-paced beats and silky production. The visuals for “Morals” were filmed on independence day in Atlanta, Georgia. A place close to the artists heart, the cinematic video features stunning shots of the city, incorporating their celebratory fireworks.

SCU’s music is a beautiful juxtaposition with upbeat dance/pop melodies complimenting the darker lyrical undertones. Instantly recognisable, SCU has crafted an unmistakable sound, written to encourage others to feel good, dance their worries away or to reflect on the relatable narratives of heartbreak, love and aspirations of success. With influences ranging from Frank Sinatra and Prince, to David Bowie, Usher and Coldplay, SCU shares, “Music is universal to me, regardless of genre, I want to be known as an artist to hold commercial success in a variety of different genres.”

Hoping to help others overcome their own struggles with mental health, SCU wants to share his experiences, shining light on a subject very close to his heart. In his free time, SCU delivers talks and presentations to both the corporate and creative world about mental health, using his music as the driving force to reach wider audiences. Having performed to sold out audiences across Atlanta and at home in the UK, as well as garnering acclaim from publications, SC. Undercover is labelled as an artist to watch.

LA-based and raised artist Leah Kate made a remarkable debut with her 2019 Impulse EP. In May 2020, she upped the ante with “bad idea” which appeared on Spotify’s New Music Friday (US) and the MTV Push: RADAR playlists plus caught a hint of virality thanks to @girls who shared the song with their 5M+ followers on TikTok.

Today Leah Kate reveals “fuck up the friendship” – another undeniably groovy electronic-pop meets disco gem, co-written with Sophie Simmons and Louis Schoorl and featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday (US). On her last single she pleaded, “Could we keep this a secret / that nobody needs to hear? / ‘cause i know you’re a bad, bad, bad idea.” but on the new track it’s clear she’s had a change of heart. She admits, “This weekend I saw you / from eyes that are new / You got me falling for you / and I kinda want to… / Let’s fuck up the friendship…” Fans can additionally check out the official music video self-directed and edited by Leah Kate – LISTEN / WATCH HERE.

Leah Kate says, “‘fuck up the friendship’ was inspired by my experience falling for a friend who I never thought I would fall for. I really valued our friendship, but the feelings were just too strong to ignore. And yet again, I created another home made video during quarantine. It’s supposed to take you through the mental state of falling for someone – I used abstract objects that are representative of love and friendship while also providing a nostalgic, vintage vibe. At the end of the day, I wanted to bring good, fun vibes to people during this time. Music unites people and I hope someone can get a good dance out of it :)”

Leah Kate’s collection is a true embodiment of her lifelong journey in search of confidence and self-identity paralleled by her IDGAF attitude. The artist to watch captures the young female experience, by looking inward at her own, to deliver bops that will uplift you no matter the situation. In an interview with Wonderland Magazine, she says “My tracks range in topics: ‘Girl on Girl’ is about an experience I had getting cyber bullied over Instagram, and my want for girls to lift each other up, not be mean to one another… ‘BFF’ touches on my experience of how a best friend can be your worst enemy when you don’t even know it.”

Fusing honest and vulnerable lyrics with feel-good dance-worthy production, it’s no surprise Leah Kate has racked up millions of streams since her launch in 2019 and has landed on Spotify’s US and global New Music Friday playlists as well as Creamy, Dance Rising, Friday Cratediggers, Pop Right Now, Pop Rising. Sad Beats, etc. The rising singer-songwriter’s music has additionally been featured on Freeform’s The Bold Type, MTV’s The Hills: New Beginnings, and garnered global support from the likes of 1883, Clash, Dancing Astronaut, Earmilk, HollywoodLife, LA Weekly, Ladygunn, NYLON, Ones To Watch, Spindle Magazine, and more.

Generating widespread acclaim, Variety noted, “[it] establishes that there’s no one in contemporary pop better at flexing mezzo-soprano sensitivity and social empathy like a muscle. It’s the perfect album for anyone who could use a little fierce snowflake pride.” The album features stand out tracks “A Safe Place to Land” featuring John Legend, as well as “Saint Honesty,” which won a Grammy® Award for “Best American Roots Performance.” Additionally, on the Amidst The Chaos Tour, she took the stage at iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden and The Hollywood Bowl.

Meet Ghost Town Remedy: an energetic power pop/punk quartet hailing from Nashville, TN. They are thrilled to share their newly released single, “Therapy,” streaming everywhere, and featured in Substream Magazine.

“It’s kind of a funny story actually,” says lead singer and guitarist TJ Maher. “The song itself came about during an argument with my ex. She basically told me, ‘I can’t be your girlfriend and your therapist. You’re going to have to pick one.’ I started writing the chorus right there mid-fight. ‘Therapy’ for me, is a song about recognizing that you can’t always do everything on your own and that it’s ok to ask for help if you need it,” continues Maher. “Everyone has their burdens and we’ve all dealt with depression in some form or another.”

Ghost Town Remedy exhibits “truly shred worthy guitar riffs…with subtle hints of Nintendo-Rock” says Under Bright Lights. With unique songwriting, 4 part harmonies, melodic guitars, fuzzy bass lines, and massive drums you’re sure to have a good time.

Ghost Town Remedy formed in 2011 after TJ Maher (Guitarist) and Steve Lane (Drummer) met while performing in a local Christmas pageant in Northern Virginia. They found themselves learning tunes off of Weezer’s Blue Album instead of practicing the required material. After years of circulating the DIY scene in NoVA, the band relocated to Nashville in 2016 and released their first effort “Caffeine Dreams” in September of 2017. Shortly after that release, Rich Ridgell (Bass) and Jordan Winborne (Guitar) rounded out the lineup. GTR is currently putting the final touches on their upcoming album with plans to release in summer 2020.

Liberian-born fashion designer and musician TAKI delivers another track that speaks to women of his past. TAKI’s (artist name Girl God) new single, “Whole Thing”OUT NOW, features poetic lyrics and powerful piano playing describing his love and war affair with the ocean. This is the second release from his debut self-produced album, Girl God out July 24, 2020.

Growing up during one of the most violent periods of his country, the Liberian Civil War, TAKI witnessed the ocean being used as a burial ground. “Whole Thing” transforms the waves of war that he once feared into harmonic rhythms of love and peace.  The cover art of TAKI’s parents on their wedding day symbolizes a covenant we all have with our Whole Thing.

Be sure to check out the new single, “Whole Thing”, available on all streaming platforms now! Look for TAKI’s debut album, Girl God, out on all streaming platforms July 24th.
