Artist of the Week!

Exclusive Interview with “Artist of the Week” LA-based singer/songwriter Kristiane

“Wish I Could Be Your Girl” is an intimate tale written by Kristiane on the floor of her apartment late one night over our quarantined summer.

“I couldn’t sleep and wanted to call somebody, but convinced myself it would be burdensome. So, I wrote “Should I call / Don’t wanna bother / Am I the deadbeat father never on the way”, and then I picked up my guitar and the track wrote itself”

This song to me isn’t about literally wanting to be somebody’s “girl”, but rather wanting to fit the archetype of the kind of partner that’s easy to be with, uncomplicated. I think as someone who struggles with mental health it’s easy to demonize your emotions, instead of embracing that it’s okay to be someone with a complicated history/emotions” – Kristiane

Kritiane tapped producer Jesse Munsat to bring the track to life the way she dreamed it would sound.

Hi Kristiane, welcome to OLC! So for all our followers how did your musical journey begin and who was your inspiration?

I grew up singing and writing music. I naturally was drawn to plays, later choir, literally was in an acapella group at my high school.. I then progressed to doing solo shows in LA. I spent every day after school writing songs in my laundry room, and later interning for studios. I have spent the last few years writing and crafting a sound that I really resonate with. I released a single last summer, “I Can’t Tell”, produced by my good friend Micah. We made it in his bedroom, and released it with absolutely no backing on a whim. I am continually inspired by Amy Winehouse, Elliott Smith, Cat Power, Radiohead, The Cure, Phoebe Bridgers, Angel Olsen and more.

You have a single out called “Wish I could be your girl”, Can you tell me about the inspiration and meaning behind the song?

I wrote this song on the floor of my apartment really late at night over the summer. I couldn’t sleep and wanted to call somebody, but convinced myself it would be burdensome. So, I wrote “Should I call / Don’t wanna bother / Am I the deadbeat father never on the way”, and then I picked up my guitar, and the song wrote itself from there. Most of my songwriting works like that, I get a lyric or melody in my head, and then the plotline kind of unfolds. This song to me isn’t about literally wanting to be somebody’s “girl”, but rather wanting to fit the archetype of the kind of partner that’s easy to be with, uncomplicated. I think as someone who struggles with mental health it’s easy to demonize your emotions, instead of embracing that it’s okay to be someone with a complicated history/emotions.

Can we expect and EP or album to follow?

Yes! You can expect another single in the Fall, and an EP following in the Winter.
