INsiders Guide: VeeAlwaysHere, A!MS, FRENSHIP, DDG, Martha Zed, Excuses Excuses, ACTRESE, Miranda Joan, SHEENAH KO…

Producer, Songwriter and Recording Artist, VeeAlwaysHere, is exploring a new side to his creative process with the release of “other side,” out today. As an artist who doesn’t allow himself to be pigeonholed into one type of genre, the release of “other side” speaks to that. As a self-taught and
self-sufficient musician, VeeAlwaysHere elaborates; “This was my first time producing and writing a record like this. Many people in the industry told me to just pick one type of sound and stick with it; but as a music consumer myself, I generally do not gravitate towards those types of artists. I want to challenge the industry standards and have fun with every record I create.” Inspired by the likes of throwback Harry Styles and The Weeknd, most simply put, “other side” is a song meant for all the hopeless romantics. “This song is telling a similar story to a few animes that I’ve watched recently. It’s a story we’ve all heard before, but they always seem to bring me joy as a viewer and a hopeless romantic myself. The story of a socially awkward character who falls in love with the “popular”
girl, and over time she sees something great in him and they fall in love.” VeeAlwaysHere continues “”other side,” for me, symbolizes this completely different life she is living, a whole different world. And while I know we’re not meant to be together, I believe in this tropey happy ending and I’m already “packing my bags” to go move to that “other side” and do my best to fit in just to be with her.”

Fresh from his sell-out performances alongside the likes of ArrDee and Zie Zie at his innovative new venue  ‘The Wave’ in WaterWorld water park,  Ayia Napa, A!MS hits the bulls eye with new track, ‘Don’t Slip’.

Adding to a catalogue of successful tracks and a debut album, the multi-talented, wordsmith, songwriter, acclaimed beatmaker and entrepreneur, Anthony Melas, more famously known by the stage name, A!MS drops a drippy summer anthem to soundtrack the season.

Delivering a masterclass in his classic melodic rap, the internationally renowned rapper, who has previously worked alongside major names from hitmakers Cool & Dre and The Game through to Afro B, Projexx and Julian Marley, bringing the very best of his craft on this latest release. The track boasts an instantly addictive, weighty beat, hypnotic ad-libs, an undeniably catchy hook and synthesised undertones as ‘Don’t Slip’ sees A!MS continue on his upward trajectory, seeing his success story scaling to new heights and is undoubtedly going to show a further spike in action with this latest drop. Providing a fresh, grown and sexy twist on ‘Don’t Slip’, the depth and impact of the record is tangible and is a commendable addition to his extensive rap library.

Indie pop duo FRENSHIP are thrilled to release their new single “Cry” that is out now.

FRENSHIP says, “Cry embodies a real fuck it moment in our songwriting. We typically comb our lyrics obsessively but with this one we stepped away from the large perspective writing and focused on real granular feelings. Before the session with our buddy Hazy Eyes, Brett stubbed his toe after a bad day and it just about brought him to tears. The song spun off from there and we focused on that moment when the tears arrive and how therapeutic a good cry can be. As the songs says, ‘cry let it out, fuck the bigger picture’ just feels good sometimes. Hopefully this song is your nudge to let go, have a good cry and move on.”

multiplatinum Pontiac, MI rising rapper DDG unveils a new single and music video entitled “If I Want You.” Listen to “If I Want You” HERE and watch the music video HERE.

On the track, spacey production echoes with a sparse beat and an effervescent guitar loop. DDG serves up emotionally charged verses and a hypnotic hook underlined by beautiful background vocals and mesmerizing harmonies. The music video is starring none other than his girlfriend Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle who appears in the accompanying cinematic visual, which depicts their vibe on-screen in a fascinating fashion.

It notably paves the way for his anxiously awaited new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, coming very soon.

He set the stage for album with “Storyteller.” It has already amassed over 2.1 million Spotify streams and 2.9 million YouTube views on the music video. Right out of the gate, REVOLT noted, “From a musical standpoint, DDG has come a long way, and UPROXX hailed it as “a romantic-ish single detailing a toxic situation that made him wiser—if not more forthcoming about his own shortcomings.

It’s pretty funny when I think about how of all the songs I could put out into the world as my first release, it ended up being a song about my cat. That’s the power cats have, I guess. The feline overlords.

I present you with my aptly-titled debut single, “Cat Song.”Stream now via your preferred platform.

There’s a certain vulnerability that comes along with a relationship with an animal. Your pets see you in a way you’d never allow people to see you. Maybe that’s why we love them as much as we do – not because of the unconditionality of their love – but because we can’t help but just be ourselves. That shameless coexistence is pretty liberating.

All that being said, I sincerely believe if my cat was a little bit bigger he’d kill me in my sleep.

I hope you enjoy “Cat Song,”

Rock and roll: young hearts, alive, wild, and free, under the lights of a club stage, in front of decibel-bending amplifiers, behind a wall of shaking fists and shouting friends, conjuring the spirits, cleansing with fire. Like an untamed and ferocious animal, you can feel and hear it all wash over you like waves from your place in the crowd. It is here that Excuses Excuses are most at home.

Unlike some of their contemporaries however, Excuses Excuses don’t rely on just their energetic spirit alone: Excuses Excuses expertly pairs their unconfined, youthful energy with a pop sensibility and a focused sense of attention to the most subtle details of meticulously catchy songwriting.

“I was always very attracted to high energy music, and that started with Sabbath,” recalls singer and guitarist Kyle Wilton, reminiscing of rifling through a dusty record collection, the spirit of rock and roll at his fingertips, right there for the taking. “But all of our songs really mean something very specific, and although we want people to interpret them however it makes sense to them, you’ve got to communicate those emotions in a way that people are going to feel.”

ACTRESE is set to release ‘Vivid But Vague’, her unapologetic new single which will be available globally on 16th September. The new indie – pop track ‘Vivid But Vague’ features ambient pads, melodic bass and bendy guitar that help ACTRESE’s soft yet disturbed, full of substance voice take flight. In the opening monologue, she digs into her own life offering herself to the fans, unleashing the ever crippling but inspiring anxieties for a more complex experience.. The song with its shape – shifting sounds, heartwarming cello and shivering guitar sees ACTRESE relentlessly dwell on fleeting moments, fleeting feelings and fleeting people, revealing her ethereal and haunting twist on pop. ‘Vivid But Vague’ was written by ACTRESE whilst produced by William Baxter at Ten87 Studios.

Miranda Joan is a Canadian soul-pop singer and songwriter born in Montreal and raised in Vancouver. Currently based in Brooklyn, Joan maintains strong roots in Canada. Joan divides her time between countries and it was her university studies in Jazz that originally brought her to New York, a city whose grittiness and intensity has influenced her artistry as profoundly as her bi-coastal upbringing. The fluidity that came with growing up along the Pacific Ocean in Vancouver and the joy-de-vivre and creativity that Montreal exuded continue to shape Joan personally, artistically and spiritually. Both her French and English backgrounds have made their way into her writing, which orients itself around story and lyrics and is largely influenced by her reverence for soul and pop music. Joan is currently at work on her next album Overstimulated ( a follow up to Windborne and Still EP) produced by CARRTOONS, the album features notable collaborators such as Jake Sherman. The first single and title track “Overstimulated” is set for release August 29th 2022.

Miranda Joan was selected as one of First Up with RBCxMusic Emerging Artists in 2021, shared the virtual stage at CMW and has received radio airplay in Vancouver and Los Angeles. Joan has performed on national tours and played sold-out shows as well as headlined well-known NYC venues. In 2019, she performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival with the Orchestra National de Jazz de Montreal, led by Sly5thAve in a tribute to Dr. Dre, and she is a co-host and co-founder of Brooklyn’s Femme Jam (NYC’s first all-female led jam session) which is a community initalitve to create a women-lead space with an emphasis on female musicians that fosters inclusively and creates community. Artist mentorship has been an important through-line in Joan’s career and for the past eight years she has been a music mentor with the non-profit SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young where she works with youth 8-18 who stutteer.

Joan has shared the stage singing background for high profile artists including Andy Grammar, Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton), Christopher Jackson (Hamilton), Surf Mesa, Lorde and Shawn Mendes.

Montreal-based electronic-pop artist Sheenah Ko, who is also a core member of Canadian indie darlings Besnard Lakes,  releases “Eyes of the Ego,” the fourth single and music video from her recent sophomore album, Future Is Now.

While the track embodies the same introspective, ethereal qualities pioneered by trailblazing artists such as Kate Bush and Björk, the video for “Eyes of the Ego” is poised and powerful, unraveling with a grace that runs refreshingly contrary to the frantic pace of many modern videos.

Watch the music video HERE

Sheenah excitedly notes that the clip also serves to break down several cultural barriers as she works to highlight underrepresented and marginalized populations through her work.

“I am proud to share a music video that was 100% female-made from all the cast, crew, and management, and where over half the cast and crew identify as LGBTQ+,” says Sheenah, who also identifies as LGBTQ+. “I was also thrilled to have Chinese Canadian violinist FOONYAP contribute to the recording of the track. Her performance marries brittle traditional melodies with classical deconstructionism and a minimalist electronic aesthetic”.

Directed by Anne Marie Munoz, the video for “Eyes of the Ego” stars Ko alongside filmmaker/artist/actor Katharine King So, and Le Couleur vocalist Laurence Giroux-Do, all women of mixed Asian descent.

“I believe it’s important that we continue to employ and cast diversity as we move forward into a more open generation of visuals and how media represents the current population,” she explains. “I love breaking barriers and exposing viewers to more openness and acceptance, not only through my music but also through the visuals.”

I am writing to you to share Firelight, an EP composed of songs I wrote during the healing journey I went on following a really terrible and impossible breakup.

It was a long road back to myself after that experience. There were a lot of points where I really wasn’t sure I was going to get through it. Music was what I turned to in those moments of hopelessness, as well as the moments of peace.

Firelight‘s title track, written with my friend and fellow artist, Freida Mari, is our way of expressing the feeling you get when you’ve found someone new.

You’re excited for what it could be, but the wounds from your last try haven’t fully healed. You want love, but the road there has been full of potholes and dead ends.

This song is about seeing the potential in someone and going for it even though there is the fear of it burning out.
Listen to my new EP, Firelight, featuring the title track on your favourite platform.

If I turned it off, would I gain control? Cause I’m tired of you having it all.

For me, love and relationships have consisted of a power struggle a lot of the time. It has felt in the past like there is some sort of game to be played, especially in the beginning.

Dating in this generation is challenging because it seems most people seek only ‘the chase.’ If you make yourself too available, it will somehow scare the other person off. When I wrote this song, I was wrapped up in that mindset big time.

During my previous relationship, I had given myself fully right from the start and it ended horribly. Coming out of that, I felt as if the next relationship was bound to be the same and I wanted to have control over my emotions and my heart. I did not want to surrender that control to someone else again. But putting up walls wasn’t the answer either.

Firelight‘s songs are about love and heartbreak, but they are also about self-discovery through those emotions. I hope this EP can be a space to grieve losses which you may have endured, as well as an opportunity to find peace within all the noise.

Thank you for listening,

Lucy Morgan

Astralux in Los Angeles

In a sea of solo artists and musical projects, ASTRALUX is something of an anomaly – an old-school, Los Angeles Rock band.

Introduced to each other by a mutual ex-girlfriend, guitarist/vocalist Will Schlich and drummer Michael Lieberman began playing together in the summer of 2021. Through a serendipitous encounter, bassist Camille Fadl joined one of their “jam sessions” shortly after, and the three musicians instantly recognized the unique chemistry between them.  Sparked by collective creativity, they quickly graduated from playing simple covers to writing original music, which led to the formation of ASTRALUX. In early 2022, virtuoso guitarist Tai Ayres joined the group, completing the current line-up.

Drawing equally from old and new, the ASTRALUX sound is daringly distinctive, yet timeless. Inspired by The Strokes, The Beatles, Nirvana, and countless artists in between– every ASTRALUX song reveals a bold synthesis of styles that’s simply indefinable.

In only a year, ASTRALUX has established themselves as a fixture in the LA live scene – playing venues such as the Whisky a Go Go, The Viper Room, Harvard and Stone, and The Mint, amongst many others. The band’s debut album, Desert Dream, is scheduled for release in the fall of 2022.

New York-based songwriter and producer ADE has unveiled “Junk In Orbit”, the first single taken from his forthcoming EP.

STREAM ON ALL SERVICES HERE || WATCH THE VIDEO HERE

Finding natural synergy between polished production and a distorted lo-fi feel, “Junk In Orbit” is an apocalyptic anti-anthem for the internet age. Blending distorted riffs with earworm instrumentals that wriggle and writhe like a muddled train of thoughts through our hyper-online heads, the track seesaws between fearful and feel-good in a beat.

Written during the confusion and claustrophobia of lockdown, Ade says:

“”Junk In Orbit” was born of the frustrations of my force-fed algorithmic exposure to the outside world during quarantine, a surreal feed of images, opinions and purported events that dangerously blurred the lines between news and “content”, and really distorted my perception of time. To be honest I’m still kind of adjusting to life in The Void.”

As darkly dystopian as it is danceable, the new track arrives as the first glimpse into Ade’s upcoming ‘Junk In Orbit’ EP arriving later this year. A collection of “pandemic songs” that play out like a cut-and-paste set of personal reflections for the artist, Ade explains:

“The depths of that first anxiety-riddled wave and the ensuing quarantine was, for many of us, an overwhelming house-arrest moving simultaneously in slow-motion and hyper-speed. A glimpse into some dystopian, online future in which our primary experience of the outside world is through our feeds: often grotesque, unhinged and sloppily tailored algorithms bombarding us with misinformation, celebrity, political and systemic failure, Animal Crossing, cooking videos, conspiracy, astrology, unsolicited photos of our exes and any number of pre-pandemic ephemera.”

Blending these grim cultural observations with bubbling synths and fuzzy riffs, Ade adds:

“Looking back, it makes perfect sense that I gravitated towards distortion to express myself in pursuit of catharsis.”

Rich velvety vocals teamed with dreamy production make ‘Ego’ the perfect tune to keep on repeat this summer.

Born from seeing friends get hurt by men who should know better, ‘Ego’ is a track to remind the men, guilty of treating women badly, to do better. Sharing more Kaisha explained:

“This track is about men who pretend to be good guys. I often hear stories of situations where they’re incredibly nice to their friends but completely the opposite when it comes to the person in a relationship with them. Almost like a facade that they keep up for the outside world but when they’re complacent, their true colours shine through. Save us the time and don’t pretend to be something you’re not.”

Ego is the first single to follow Kaisha’s gorgeous, second EP ‘If Not Now Then When’ which came out last year. The rising artist will be marking the release of her new single with a show at the Prince Albert in Brighton, TONIGHT – get your tickets HERE

Since she launched, Kaisha has been making a name for herself with her signature honey dipped vocals, talented songwriting and soul-soaked melodies. Already bagging support from the likes of Clash, Notion, Wonderland, Trench, This Song Is Sick and more, she’s positioned herself as an exciting artist to watch for 2022.

Kaisha was born in Malaysia and relocated to Brighton in 2015 to study music. Taking inspiration from the likes of Mac Ayres, The Internet, SiR, Moonchild & Joyce Wrice, the up and coming artist has a fondness for experimentation and twisted R&B.

Melbourne marvel Sir Jude drives forward in her adrenaline-infused new single ‘Preach’ featuring Maxim of The Prodigy.

Digitalised throbs are ever-present in ‘Preach’, the latest addition from Sir Jude as she embarks on a journey of love, self-hood, heartbreak and hope in her forthcoming debut album Revelations. Enlisting electronic mastermind Maxim for the release, his distinct and iconic musical style elevates Sir Jude’s brooding vocal, amounting in a gritty pulsation of estranged alternative pop.

It was so brilliant working with Maxim. The Prodigy was incredibly influential to me. I remember my dad showing me Firestarter as a kid and being completely blown away. They pioneered that sound,” says Sir Jude.

This single contributes to the visual story that culminates her pending debut album, Revelations, a body of work that represents a sonic journey of unravelling internalised misogyny and discovery of the self, pushing the boundaries of pop with lyrical prowess in its stride.

Maxim reached out at the height of the pandemic, a real “pinch me” moment for the budding artist. “As for the song, weeks before I had recorded a sample of my windscreen wipers on a really rainy night. The cadence was so interesting and I was completely drawn to the bouncy rhythm and the aggressive tones. Maxim was intrigued by its dark energy and we both agreed for the song to be tonally cutthroat, ethereal and aggressive with a message on self-love and independence.

Up until now, the release of Sir Jude’s debut EP Dreamlands 2020, featuring ‘What the Hell Have You  Done’, has collectively accrued over 250,000 streams and saw a feature on Spotify’s Fresh Finds  playlist.

Shortly after its release, her song ‘Mirror’ was synced to MTV‘s reality TV show, ‘Catfish’. More recently, ‘What the Hell Have You Done’ and ‘Because You’re Mine’ were spotted in Netflix UK’s  Series, ‘The A List’.

Her most recent single ‘Madonna’ was also showered in love, having been praised by the likes of The IndependentEARMILK and Wonderland who have pegged Sir Jude as one to watch in 2022 for her “ethereal vocals and experimental edge.

Bostonian electropop group Battlemode share their debut EP, Color Punk. This 5-track collection of glitchy, vibrant and unabashed digital pop was first unveiled in July of 2021 with the vanguard single “Midnight Blue” and continued to be teased in the months since by the release of two further singles as well as numerous live shows across the northeast.

Though Color Punk represents the first chapter in Battlemode’s storyline, the duo of Astro & Biff have already seen a decade of friendship. Indeed Battlemode’s music exists as a natural extension of their already intertwined lives. Both work together at the same independent movie theater and are roommates, so it’s little surprise that the two music-lovers created a musical world to explore together as well.  Battlemode is the vibrant and irrepressibly energetic creative result of these mismatched and inseparable friends. Together they create dynamic electro pop that embraces the sounds of the past in order to look forward; incorporating the glitchy 8-bit chiptune sounds that accompanied adolescent days spent playing Gameboys, and reinvigorating them amongst contemporary synth tones and fresh beats.

If there were one word that would encapsulate the ethos of Battlemode, and therefore their Color Punk EP, it would be ‘friendship’ in all of its guises. The debut Battlemode single, “Midnight Blue” explored this topic through the lens of Astro’s relationship with his cat Smoki Boi. Amongst buzzing synths and crisp arpeggios “Midnight Blue” explored the life lessons learned in their early days together as Smoki Boi slowly learned to build trust, having been recently abandoned.

That single was followed by “BFF” (featuring fellow 8-bit enthusiast Sam Mulligan) which offered up technicolor tribute to the emotional journey of friendship. Battlemode’s Biff explains, “Though “BFF” is written to express upbeat positivity, the song also recognizes the frustrations that can be tied to friendship, sometimes even leading to feelings of hatred.” He continues, “through personal experience, one lesson Battlemode might relay is that sticking together and loyalty, especially in times of struggle, can create the strongest of bonds.”

Indian born, London based artist Renao today reveals the stunning video for Moonwalking. Produced by Starsmith and written with Cleo, the track is an infectious synth driven alt cut showcasing Renao’s dreamy vocals over glistening disco-inspired production. The first track to be released following his acclaimed debut EP, From The South,  ‘Moonwalking’ represents the next steps from an artist set for a busy second half of 2022. Speaking on the release, he states:

I made moonwalking on my first session with  Finn and Cleo, I was listening to silk sonic and wondered how I heard myself in that world and Finn played me this funky beat he made super bare bones and we built it from there. Kinda gave me oceans eleven visuals from the get go and that’s why there’s casino and money references in the song. And I was thinking of that visually I thought it would be really cool if I was moonwalking through this casino and that’s basically the inspiration for the whole song. Me seamlessly gliding thru a casino was what I felt my girlfriend doing to my brain and so I wrote a song about it !

Maddisun (aka singer/songwriter Maddison Keiver) is an authentic, visceral, and magnetic artist whose unique music melds together indie-folk, soulful R&B, and electro-pop. Maddisun crafts incredibly inspiring and uplifting music true to her heart, sharing emotional journeys of love, heartache, growth, and resilience.

Maddisun‘s genuineness, raw vocal talent and pure musicality sparkle on her new LP, Home Is Where The Music Is, co-produced by Nick Noto and Chloe Chaidez of PSY SOUND.

Classic country and soul influences shine in the feature track “Running,” about transitioning into the next phase of her career. Maddisun is taking a chance on herself to pursue her passion; not holding back despite any obstacles, while staying true to her rural British Columbia roots.

Home is a feeling, not a place. About the album inspiration, she explains, “When I’m travelling all over and the concept of ‘home’ is a little messy, I find myself leaning towards my music and yearning to connect with that part of myself. Once I find it, I’m home no matter where in the world I am.”

An intensely personal reflection on growth in unexpected places, MisterWives’ last album SUPERBLOOM marked a moment of major transformation for frontwoman Mandy Lee and her bandmates: Etienne Bowler (drums), William Hehir (bass), Marc Campbell (guitar), and Mike Murphy (saxophone). The New York City-bred band’s third full-length, the 19-track epic found MisterWives greatly expanding their already-adventurous sound, introducing new textures and colors to their magnetic form of indie-pop. On the album’s soul-stirring title track, MisterWives close out SUPERBLOOM with a moment of pure triumph and a profound sense of possibility. With its chorus including a lyric Lee later adopted as a mantra in times of self-doubt (“I deserve congratulations, ’cause I came out the other side”), “SUPERBLOOM” draws much of its power from its graceful arrangement of so many potent elements: soulful horns and luminous piano melodies, hard-hitting rhythms and gospel-choir harmonies.

MisterWives have come out the other side stronger than ever and as the band departs from the world of Superbloom and into the next they have launched their own label Resilient Little Records and partnered with PhotoFinish Records/Virgin Music.  Their new chapter began with the double single Easy / Where Do We Go From Here? released this summer, followed by the band’s biggest headlining tour yet. “Wrongside”, their latest single, was released August 31st. The song is cathartic, catchy, and charismatically poised with the band’s signaturecolorfulmelodies and magnetic vocals that captivate and illuminate. The ruminative track challenges the listener to break free from negative thought patterns andcritical inner dialogues, reinforcing the importance of being there for yourself. “I have spent a lot of my time on the wrong side of my mind- the one full of fear, doubts, insecurities, shame,” confides Mandy. “I hope Wrongside feels like a friend to anyone who struggles being kind to their mind.”

Following up the release of well received Topaz Jones collaboration ‘BREADWINNER’, Virginia born, LA based polymath Floyd Fuj continues to build the growing buzz around his name with the release of stellar new single, ‘TONGUE TIED’. Showcasing his melodic delivery and razor sharp songwriting, the track is another stand out offering from an artist set for a big few months. Speaking on the release, Floyd Fuji states:

“This song was written during the first Covid lockdown here in LA. I was already fantasizing what it would feel like to finally leave my house. We were stuck inside for so long. I almost forgot how to walk, let alone talk and meet new people. Everyday I’m still trying to poke holes in this bubble I built around myself. Though things in the world are still a bit shaky, I hope this track makes you dance around and momentarily release the worries of the world around you.”
