INsiders Guide: JAKE MILLER, Zoe Guigueno, WATSON, JNR CHOI, David Myles, Arkells, MARIS, Cody Carrera, THE ILLICITS, Jonny Ash, LESS KILLJOY…

critically acclaimed pop singer/songwriter/producer Jake Miller releases his latest single “Leave My Heart Alone” via EMPIRE. Featuring an electric beat, the track finds Jake struggling to get over an ex. Jake has also announced that his forthcoming EP BASED ON A TRUE STORY II – a follow-up to his 2019 project BASED ON A TRUE STORY – will be released on November 4th. The 7-track EP is available for pre-save now.

“Since ‘Based On A True Story’  was such an amazing staple in my career, I figured it needed a sequel. This is a perfect continuation of the story and evolution of my musical growth,” says Jake Miller. ““Leave My Heart Alone’ is probably my favorite song off the EP. This whole project was so much fun to create, and I’m so excited for the world to hear it.”

During the summer, Jake treated fans to the 11-city 8 Tattoos Tour, which had stops in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more. He  also released feel-good singles and accompanying visuals, including “8 Tattoos” (watch HERE) and “Keep Her” (watch HERE).

BC musician Zoe Guigueno’s new single and video ‘Benefit Of The Doubt’ is out now on all digital streaming platforms. Watch video here

‘Benefit Of The Doubt’ is the 2nd single from Zoe’s new album We Were Radar Stations, which will be released on October 13th. The origin story for this folky jazz-influenced track is an interesting one; beginning with someone else’s words.

“The lyrics of this song came to me as a letter from a penpal–a woman I had met at a music camp,” says Zoe. “Though the content of her initial correspondence had been relatively light, this one was the result of a rapid eye therapy session; a candid outpouring of her life story. I remember my jaw dropping as I read it; needing to process, I put the letter on my piano and sang her words aloud.”

Accompanying the single release is a music video directed by Ali Calladine. The video portrays the relationship between artist and muse–in this case, Zoe and the penpal.

Zoe explains: “Filmed at Fiddlehead Studio on Mayne Island–the same place the album was recorded–the video illustrates the stages of the song’s creation, from the initial spark of inspiration, through the artist’s emotional processing, to the final performance of the complete song.”

Indie Rock band, WATSON is thrilled to release their new EP  Place in Space that is out now.

WATSON singer/lyricist Christina and guitarist/co-songwriter Damon Watson comprise a brother/sister duo anchoring their eponymous quintet, also featuring Louis Courts on guitar, Jace Jensen on bass and Sam Ward on drums. The Watson siblings channel a built-in friendship to create lyrically conscientious and melodically memorable soundscapes with message and melody that linger long after first listen.

Music with a message may be a trite descriptor these days, but with WATSON it bursts anew on a scene cluttered with happy-go-lucky indifference. This observant, seasoned duo – they’ve been playing and studying music since childhood – and their equally well-schooled bandmates deliver meaningful and topical material that sings without preaching. Songs such as inaugural single “Place In Space,” about abandoning toxic relationships, and the new video-supported single “Marshmallow Land,” a piercingly haunting condemnation of corporate-driven environmental irresponsibility, underscore the band’s beautiful and earnest perspective.

Continuing a massive year, gold-certified UK genre breaker JNR Choi unveils a new single and music video entitled “Tick Tock” today. Listen to “Tick Tock” HERE and watch the music video for “Tick Tock” HERE. He is also this month’s digital cover star for TMRW Magazine. Read the feature HERE

The track unfolds as an international anthem with a wavy tropical undercurrent. JNR Choi’s dynamic vocals ebb and flow between breezy verses and a catchy call-and-response hook. In the accompanying visual, he experiences an exotic getaway with a female protagonist highlighted by dancing in the street, cruising in a classic car, and turning up by the pool and at the beach. The track and the video serve as the perfect bookend to a red-hot summer for the rapidly rising talent. Most importantly, it showcases his ability to seamlessly fuse genres in service of original and undeniable songcraft.

Moreover, it arrives on the heels of “Amused” [feat. Fivio Foreign]. The latter generated over 1.4 million Spotify streams and 896K YouTube views on the music video. Earning widespread critical acclaim, DAZED praised it for “exhibiting his persistence in not letting his foot off the pedal as a new artist,” and LA Weekly applauded, “The duel vocals works brilliantly well, the transatlantic rap styles bumping up against each other effectively. REVOLT attested, “Much of the catchy single is centered around the artists’ rockstar lifestyles.

Our most fundamental questions—about how to exist in this world we share, and how best to love the people we love—so often keep us awake at the end of the day, at a loss for answers. From the plaintive opening notes of David Myles’ It’s Only a Little Loneliness, the New Brunswick-based songwriter testifies that he’s no exception: “I could try to explain what goes on in my brain, but I’d have to pretend that I knew,” he sings on “Certain.” On his introspective 15th studio album, Myles establishes himself as a seeker—of paths, of new sonic expressions, of God. Concrete answers, however, elude him the same as they elude the rest of us. All of that seeking reveals one clear conclusion, though: we are bound to each other.

Sometimes it takes something massive, though—a rending of the fabric of one’s reality—to see our interdependence on one another clearly enough to inspire profound changes. In 2018, Myles came down with a sudden illness that had him worried that his life and ability to make music were in jeopardy; in 2020, the world changed overnight, upending his life and career along with everyone else. “My worst fear was to have the career drop,” Myles says. “And then, for reasons beyond my control, it dropped for me. And I didn’t die. And it didn’t all fall apart.”

Arkells release their brand new studio record, Blink Twice, via Virgin Records. As the band stayed busy making music during the last two years, they always knew they would come out of the pandemic with two distinct records – Blink Once (50M+ streams) and its companion, Blink Twice, which showcases a new collection of songs and collaborations. Blink Twice’s current single “Past Life (ft. Cold War Kids)” sits atop the alternative radio charts in Canada this week.

“We wrote most of these songs during the quiet confusion of the pandemic and always knew that they’d make more sense to us once we played them in the real world,” says frontman Max Kerman. “We are on tour right now and every new song we’ve played feels like a living, breathing thing. The album comes out the day of our London, UK show. It’s our biggest London show ever and after all of the stops and starts of the past few years there is no better city in the world to let these songs start living their own life.”

Indie pop singer, MARIS is thrilled torelease her new single “Heavenly Bodies” that is out now“Heavenly Bodies” is the debut single and the first of several upcoming releases leading to her EP, expected March 2023.

MARIS says, “”Heavenly Bodies” is about the rollercoaster of emotions in the unbalanced and intense first love I experienced in high school. I was in love with this girl, and I existed at her beck and call. She would only hit me up when her boyfriend wasn’t talking to her, and I would happily let her pick me up (which felt like flying toward the sun), only to throw me down (coming back down to earth).

MARIS is a singer, songwriter, artist and performer who enjoys the weirdness that surrounds her. Her own radiant optimism brings the same out in anyone who is in her presence. Her music is a reflection of the liveliness she exudes; it touches on both the light and dark of life’s experiences. This duality is a constant within her story inspired by various mediums of art and life, MARIS’ artistic style is unique due to the cohesive and compelling storytelling she weaves throughout her music, visuals, and choreography. Though the music itself falls within the genre of pop, it is as dynamic as she is, drawing on influences from all kinds of genres and styles. Best experienced live, MARIS and her music have a riveting aura that ensures all in attendance are in a safe place to be their happiest, truest selves.

Since returning from a 50+ show European tour with Postmodern Jukebox, MARIS has signed with indie record label, Black House. Her first single, “Heavenly Bodies” is out now, while her debut EP, Gravity, will be released early March 2023.

His first album “Shattered Signs & Deadly Sins,” is set to release this October.

In addition to music, Cody is a gifted actor with an impressive list of credits, including a guest spot on “Glee.” Originally hired as an extra, Cody was bumped up to a speaking role during rehearsals after he made an impression on fellow cast member, Dot-Marie Jones. Blackburn four-piece THE ILLICITS have returned with their new single “Feel It”, out 26 September.

A riled-up slice of rip-roaring modern rock, “Feel It” sees The Illicits stride back into the spotlight — paying homage to their northern roots while forging their fiery own path. Blending an earworm bluesy riff with the progressive rock’n’roll sound they’ve become known for, the voltaic new cut has the Blackburn foursome barrelling towards a hopeful new horizon.

Recorded at OX4 Studios and produced by Vince Von Van, the track blends strutting guitar work with incendiary riffs and a riotous live-ready feel. Fusing meticulous musicianship with anarchic rock sensibilities, “Feel It” was written at the band’s rehearsal room in Blackburn and takes inspiration from the landscape of their hometown.

Speaking about the new song Joe Mitchell says:

“The stomping rhythm and punk production helps conjure up familiar Lancashire moods: cold early morning walks, rain-soaked shoes and slow, clattering commutes on buses and trains. The lyrics centre around how the people around us speak — ‘but you have to keep on’ is a well-known Lancastrian phrase, despite modern day life struggles. There are also references to local landmarks such as Winter Hill, and a natural rebelliousness against those who have let the industries around them fall and decline.”

An assured next step for a band already certain in their own sound, the four-piece’s dynamic take on “terrace punk” brings the post-industrial imagery of their own northern towns to the fore, and glints with the optimism of a rising young band determined to keep moving forward.

Jonny Ash are excited to be releasing their newest single, This Town. Relatable lyrics and catchy melodies paves the way for the song to resonate with anyone from a working class background and beyond. ‘This Town’ is quite simply an ode to our hometown, but it’s so much more than that. It’s an anthem of pride existing where other people think it shouldn’t, holding love for somewhere where other people wouldn’t, and understanding something other people couldn’t. Written to Wrexham, the song portrays the struggles we face in our everyday walks of life, but also how we wouldn’t have it any other way. We can’t wait to release ‘This Town’ and give something back to this place we call our town. We hope you love it as much as we do.

As an artist LESS KILLJOY really only has one wish “I hope my music will speak for itself because for real, that’s the only way I know how to express myself and interact with humans and there’s a lot I want to say”.

Her latest track “My Parade” is an energetic alt-pop track featuring quirky guitars and fuzzy 808 bass and drums that will rattle everything every part of your car loose. “My Parade” is the second offering from her forthcoming debut EP titled Pink Grenade. LESS KILLJOY has a sound all her own calling it “alt-hop, lo-fi, shoegaze indie punk. Who needs a genre right?” Inspired by a search for happiness for herself and everyone around her, “My Parade” shines with a bratty and boisterous vocal energy, dreamy synthesizers, lo fi guitar loops and in your face drums. “Maybe one day Kenny Beats will hear my shit”. That said, you can expect an overload of honesty from LESS KILLJOY. She talks about feeling underestimated and judged by the people around her and throwing it back in their faces. Happy people don’t bring you down, they encourage you, they support you…As she sings in the hook of “My Parade” – it’s the miserable that always “RAIN ON YOUR PARADE”.
Through sharing her experience, LESS KILLJOY hopes to build a community of people who feel safe around one another, despite their race, gender, sexuality, age, or socioeconomic status, her raw honesty and true passion for inclusivity makes her one to watch. Having received humbling praise from the likes of Earmilk, Record of the Day and Ones to Watch, you can expect a lot more from this exciting new Toronto talent.

This is Kalila Badali – singer, songwriter, and psychotherapist based in Toronto, and also a lead vocalist and songwriter of the indie band, Shy By Shy.

No Eye Contact” is a song about online dating, but more specifically about how easy it is to get caught up in text-based relationships and think they mean more than they sometimes do.

I wrote this song after a month of an intense internet “pen-pal” style connection that didn’t end up materializing in person. I thought there was real potential, but without being able to see this person and without knowing anything about them, I projected what I wanted to see onto them. As a therapist, I hear versions of this kind of story over and over again – it’s really such a universal experience, at least in this age of online dating.

Listen to “No Eye Contact,” out on streaming platforms everywhere now.

While this song is about online dating, something I keep returning to about the title is how significant eye contact is as a subject for myself and many other neurodivergent people. Whether it’s giving too much or not enough, people often make commentary about what eye contact communicates.

In this song, I was trying to reconcile with my own panicked response to having no eye contact while being present in person, but also how much more projection and fantasy could take place when there was no eye contact at all during online interactions.

No Eye Contact” and the EP it’s taken from – Panacea – are meant to be an expression of the sense of helplessness, hope, and longing for deep understanding that come from being a therapist and a fellow human in need.

Thanks for listening,

Kalila Badali

Jaiden, professionally known as FTL Jaii is a 16-year-old rising artist from Cleveland, OH. While he has only been taking music seriously for the past year, he was introduced to music at an early age because of his numerous family members who have been making music since he was 5 years old. He broke into the music industry this year by staying consistent and utilizing his resources.

The FTL in his name stands for “From The Land” symbolizing that he is from Cleveland, and Jaii comes from his real name, Jaiden, but he added and extra “i” because “you need two eyes to see the vision.”

Jaii brings a versatile sound to the industry being influenced by artists  such as Lil Baby and EST Gee as well as artists such as Calboy and Toosi. Although he is very young, Jaii has a story to tell and he mixes and masters his own music. His insane work ethic and consistency will be what makes him a superstar. He wants to show that you can be a young kid from a tough place and still make it.

Recently FTL Jaii was featured in Talk of the Land and won Rookie of the Year in Hot Music Cleveland in 2021. Even though he doesn’t graduate highschool until May 2023 he is definitely one of Cleveland’s most promising young artists. He’ll be performing live at The Odeon in Cleveland on October 21.

He has just released his latest single “Kim K”  produced by  Loko La’flare and featuring fellow Cleveland native Ezri. Jaii and Ezri have a long history which made this collaboration special. The video for the single is directed by Joni Spielberg and is out now. This track will be featured on his highly anticipated EP “Hottest Youngin” slated to be released in November.

“I want people to know I’m here to stay. They gotta expect the unexpected out of  me. I’m grateful for everybody on my journey and I appreciate all my supporters. “

San Diego based four piece Foxtide crafts explosive surf jazz infused psych rock that is as fresh as it is nostalgic. Composed of four close knit friends all raised in sunny Southern California, the band came together during garage jam sessions and over their shared eclectic musical palette and influences. Founding member Elijah Gibband Croft (lead guitar and vocals) the following members Dom Friedly (guitar), Oey James (bass) and Ian Robles (drums) complete the lineup, bringing a wildly diverse array of talents and sonic perspectives. Known for their expansive and immersive rock landscapes filled with melodic basslines, splashy cutting guitars, and catchy sun soaked melodies, Foxtide’s sound is cathartic and captivating. The band is hugely self made with an authentic DIY aesthetic.

Their 2021 debut full length album Visions, “is about the duality of reminiscing (living in the past) and wishing (living in the future). I think everyone participates in both of these myself included so I wanted to write about it,” confides Elijah. With a vivacious pop punk delivery, psych-drenched emotive rock soundscapes, Visions received critical and commercial acclaim leading to a fervent local fanbase. Leading single includes “She’s Not Yours” “chronicles the powerless feeling of casual love. With themes of jealousy, regret, and reminiscence and an inspiration musically from The Strokes,” proclaims Elijah. With the single “Everything That’s Mine”, Foxtide crafts an autobiographical tune all about living through your teenage years wasting time on faulty love interests. Sonic inspirations including Sublime and Fugzi penetrate “Everything That’s Mine” for a captivating Reggae rock infused listen. Grammy award-winning Jazz producer Kamau Kenyatta makes an appearance on the standout track “Ocean Blue” on another intoxicating offering from the surf Jazz meets garage rock album Visions.

With their latest single “Already Gone”, Foxtide touches on themes such as isolation, boredom and living in a relentless routine while following the story and internal dialogue of a man who is led to follow societal norms. Incorporating the band member’s experiences of mindlessly working dead end jobs and feeling as though they are wasting their time, “Already Gone” is an autobiographical account of the hardships of getting by. Combining 80’s new wave inspired sonics with early 2000’s NYC indie rock landscapes, “Already Gone” harnesses a melancholic yet enthralling musical journey.
With inspirations such as Tame Impala, The Strokes, The Beatles, The Police, The Beach Boys, and King Krule Foxtide takes their own music to new depths, creating an experimental sound that is equally familiar. With a thrilling live show to boot, Foxtide is a band on the rise.

Los Angeles based multi-instrumentalist Scott Goldbaum, whose credits include Sting, LAUV, Keith Urban, Skylar Grey, Charlotte Lawrence and Maddie Poppe, is releasing his first solo EP “Protector” this fall.

Prior to his five year hiatus from releasing music, Scott Goldbaum’s speciality was in providing “transient and breathtaking guitar work” (The Deli Magazine) as well as “beautifully textured vocals” (Indie Music Filter)both on stage and in the studio fronting his former bands Forebear, Wise Cub and The Harm.

With songwriting cuts regarded by Consequence of Sound “as an exhilarating testament to abilities” his brand new EP is sure to satisfy fans of the artists whose music inspired the production including Chris Isaak, Radiohead, Bombay Bicycle Club and Damien Rice.

“Protector” is his self produced folk-infused indie rock EP with lush string arrangements by Molly Rogers (Hans Zimmer, Game of Thrones), upright bass from Kaveh Rastegar (Sting, John Legend, Bruce Springstein), drums/percussion by Kiel Feher (Selena Gomez, Zella Day) and mixing from the famed ScottGordon (Alannis Morissette, Alexi Murdoch).

Thematically, the record follows a vulnerable character who’s in need of protection as he becomes the protector of others.  “Drive Too Fast” is a face first collision course into the dark corners of a speed induced lifestyle.  Whereas “Trigger Finger” takes place in a school, a grocery store, a parade, a place of worship or just about any other public gathering place in America. “Blood Knot” acknowledges the roots you grew out of and the tree limbs you wish to keep attached while others tear off in the wind.  In contrast to the beginning of the EP, “Mourning Coffee” makes a distinction between codependency and partnerships that are chosen and decisively cared for while the world is falling apart around you.  “Incremental” is a mediation to stay on the course of progress and empowerment, despite the shadows that closely follow.

REFS RETURN WITH ‘ NEW RELIGION’// LISTEN HERE

Making a return following a hiatus of nearly two years, Berlin/NYC based duo REFS (Dessauer and Rich) today reveal their hot-blooded new single, New Religion. The title track of their upcoming debut album, New Religion showcases Rich’s hardcore lyrics and blissed out vocals atop Dessauers punchy, intricately-crafted rhythms. Speaking on the track, they state:

“we wrote the song so quickly that we’re still having trouble wrapping our minds around what it means. This song and album was an exercise in getting the hidden contents of our brain’s id out in recorded form.”

As the weather is starting to cool down a bit we proudly bring you this appropriately autumnal single release of “The Fourth Cycle” by Denver based Allison Lorenzen. A staple in her live shows, “The Fourth Cycle” centers Lorenzen’s prodigious and classically trained piano and features a particularly tasty pop hook that is difficult to shake once it gets it’s hooks in you. Lyrically, it seems that Lorenzen is turning her face towards the other side of the cathartic nature of the critically acclaimed Tender released last year on Whited Sepulchre Records. Lorenzen states that “The Fourth Cycle”, “explores themes of intimacy and change, and the spectrum of emotion – from grief to empowerment – that arise from facing and allowing said change.” If Tender charted a way out by going through the crushing span of personal tragedy, then “The Fourth Cycle” stands on the other side of it, looking back a bit more wise and grateful.

I’m Kue Varo, front-person and muse of The Only Hopes. Our new single, “Feelin’ Lucky,” nurtures the possibilities of desire, as opposed to feeding the fears that arise when being vulnerable.

It’s a track about getting lucky and asking myself, ‘What would it look like if everything went right?’

Volition gushing from my pores, I’m tending to the clover.

Feelin’ Lucky” pulls the threads of fortune a little closer, weaving them into reality.

Russel Broom produced this track, which is the first song that the whole band truly collaborated on.

This energized and liberating song paints a picture of the ebbs and flows of a really good day, all leading to a climactic release and repeat.

The dynamics in mood and rhythm are intentional, reinforcing the lyrics by elevating them sonically.

Recently I’ve shifted focus from the idyllic standards of others that have been imposed on my life course and started to recognize the strange version of a white picket fence that’s suited to me and those I love.

Thank you for listening to our hypersigil of a new track.

I hope it inspires you to pursue pleasure and fearless fun.
