The Review: ‘Evil Dead Rise’ Revives Horror Franchise

Director: Lee Cronin

Writer: Lee Cronin

Stars: Mirabai Pease, Richard Crouchley, Anna-Maree Thomas, Lily Sullivan, Noah Paul, Alyssa Sutherland, Gabrielle Echols, Nell Fisher

The 2013 ‘Evil Dead’ film from writer Sam Raimi was one of my favourite horror films of that year. So I was highly anticipated this new chapter ‘Evil Dead Rise’ from writer/director Lee Cronin. This Evil Dead is a lot different from it’s predecessors, mainly the fact we exit the wilderness and head into the city dwellings for our next gory installment.

Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Being a horror fan I’ve seen a lot of extreme gore in films, but this one ranks pretty high in terms of one of the goriest films I’ve ever seen, some times though it makes it feel a little bit over the top. I mean there is a literal elevator full of blood that spits out our heroine.

For a cast that was relatively unknown to the big screens of Hollywood, I have to say the acting was solid. Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, and Nell Fisher were all quite good as Bridget, Danny, and Kassie. They played the kids of the film, but there acting was quite mature and in a film that was as adult as this, they needed to be and rose to the occasion. I haven’t seen the older Evil Dead films, only the 2013 movie, so I had nothing really to compare it to, but I still enjoyed it and I think horror fans a like also will.
