The Review: Margaret Qualley Seizes Control Of The ‘Sanctuary’

Zachary Wigon, the director known for the captivating film “The Heart Machine” in 2014, offers another enthralling tale of conflicted desires in “Sanctuary.” This two-character drama unfolds almost entirely within the confines of a single hotel suite, showcasing the remarkable chemistry between Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott. The film transcends the need for explicit sexual content, focusing instead on the complex psychology underlying the characters’ interactions.

Christopher Abbott portrays Hal, the heir to a substantial hotel fortune, who engages in an unusual relationship with a dominatrix named Rebecca, played by the phenomenal Margaret Qualley. The film delves into their connection, characterized by domination, humiliation, and intrigue, all without crossing into explicit sexual territories. As Hal prepares to take over his family’s business empire, he confronts the necessity of relinquishing scandalous pleasures. As Rebecca’s anticipated visit approaches, Hal readies a farewell gift, expecting a cordial ending.

Rebecca’s arrival takes an unexpected turn when she poses as a business interviewer. The film navigates their dynamic, including arguments, teases, and revelations. Margaret Qualley’s portrayal of Rebecca is mesmerizing, showcasing her ability to manipulate, provoke, and demand acknowledgment of her worth. The power dynamics shift as they argue, revealing the intricacies of their relationship and the hidden dependencies they share.

As the story progresses, the emotional intelligence displayed by both actors becomes evident, with Qualley’s performance standing out. Her portrayal of a sex worker with an uncanny ability to assert herself defies stereotypes and expectations. The film masterfully weaves moments of tension, humor, and even threats of violence, all while uncovering the genuine tenderness and secrets that bind the characters. “Sanctuary” raises questions about power, intimacy, and love, creating a captivating narrative that explores the boundaries of human connection.
