INsiders Guide: Hua Li 化力, Street Fever, ROKI, RITUAL UNION, Jharis Yokley, The Hails, The Offspring, Chris LaRocca…

Imagine a Bosch-esque garden of psychedelic flowers, blooming in a realm of eclectic delights. In the centre of the hyperreal chaos is Hua Li, the only “half-Chinese, half-militant, half-rapper of your heart,” back with her most ambitious and personal record to date, ripe fruit falls but not in your mouth.

If the garden is where we get dirty, tend to what has hurt us, and plant new seeds, ripe fruit isn’t afraid to dig in — to loss, to love’s aftermath, to the friction between the aerated and the carnal. “It’s an honest representation of my emotional state over the past few years,” says the Montreal-based multi-hyphenate. “I was experiencing this dissociation where emotionally things were challenging, but objectively my life was really great. It was like, I’m making money, I’m playing the club, there’s so much to celebrate. So I was processing this grief and these relationships, but doing it over house music” she laughs.

Hua Li’s project has often worked the fruitful tension between opposing forces, whether being mixed-race, bisexual, or overtly political and softly vulnerable. ripe fruit is characteristically libertine, bold and textural, playing between hazy R&B, hip-hop, jazz and electronic. “I wanted to integrate these more danceable signatures into a body of work that was by-and-large composed on the piano,” she says. “I was like, how do I deliver a private confessional on a loud-ass record?”

The answer lay in complex vocal arrangements, lush production by Alex Thibault (aka Gloze), and big, vibrant mixing by TNGHT’s Lunice. While 2019’s Dynasty and 2020’s critically acclaimed Yellow Crane EP were focused on intergenerational trauma, her maternal hometown of Wuhan, China, and the robust history of Asian feminisms, ripe fruit is an intimate record of healing, with Montreal’s nightlife at its heart. “There’s that feeling we all know as city kids, of loving the party and hating the party. It’s definitely my crying at the club record,” she laughs.

“Born In The Shape” is brightly taut, sensual and velvety, lingering in the no-nonsense low range before a climactic harmony that yearns for toxic romance (“what I would have done to see him/chained to me”). “Feed Me Petals” (featuring addictive, hooky vocals from Brooklyn’s Ambrose Getz), startles with lyrical acrobatics, where a call-and-response between two femme voices obscures the directly hetero-romantic narrative.

The rapper is both fierce and frequently funny, erupting from gauzy runs to deliver a quick uppercut, like on “Whiparound” feat. Darkus Millon: (“damn it if my pussy ain’t the glue that had us running toward the altar.”) “Part Time Muses” is an earthy, opalescent diss-track, recounting slept-on pleasures and near misses.

“Sanctions of the Heart” tunes into the ephemeral, like reaching out to touch what’s no longer there, while the drippy silk of “Peonies” slows the whole thing down and reminds us that the rapper is also a songstress whose rich, waveforming tone can hit notes. On “Cherrier,” Hua Li serenades her adopted city of the last fifteen years, transmuting nostalgia into fertile ground.

“[Longtime collaborator] Alex and I both come from this very instrumentalized, technical, improvised jazz world. We listen in a very similar way, but, you know, 90% of the time we’re listening to rap and electronic music.” This honed musicality is fully grown on ripe fruit. Explosive moments break into intimate, downtempo grooves, never satisfied with just one mode. While one might see mayhem in the frenzy of emotional extremes, Hua Li cultivates an astonishing synthesis: “[the tension in the arrangements] act like a metaphor for making yourself busy and avoiding your internal world, then suddenly being in stillness and recovering what it is truly going on inside.”

An artful collaborator and club DJ, Hua Li co-wrote and performed on Gayance’s 2023 Polaris short-listed album, Masquerade, and is the touring DJ for Inuk electro-pop throat singer, Riit. Her charismatic stage show has taken her around the world, including extensive tours with Cadence Weapon and Fat Tony (serving as the former’s touring DJ), to Reykjavik’s Secret Solstice Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and Pride Toronto. She’s also host of the popular web series, Landr Audio’s Learn Music.

Luminous and compelling, Hua Li shows it takes tenderness to let things ripen, and guts to let things die. In-between is a kind of rapture that begs to be savoured.

Street Fever is a versatile, mixed-media performance-artist residing in Boise, Idaho. Whom, remains anonymous. Their music is a gritty symphony born from profound life experiences and sonic experimentation. From the shrines of Three 6 Mafia in their bedroom as a kid, to being raised by the DIY hardcore scene- they have an eclectic background that sources inspo from hardcore / heavy rap / industrial techno / EBM / noise / electro / techno and classical music. 

Rooted in an ongoing spiritual awakening, Street Fever has been on a wildly cinematic path to better understand themselves as an artist, spiritual seeker, and human being. After losing all their possessions, being institutionalized multiple times and nearly losing their life in a South East Asian prison, this project has since been reborn and aims to use it as a platform to speak on their own recovery and addiction. Now more than ever they are empowered to share their story in hopes to connect with others who are seeking personal and spiritual growth.   

Street Fever deftly balances between destructive possession and holy reclamation, extending a hand to invite you into their world through the powerful mediums of art and sound. Witness their journey of self-discovery and enlightenment through their thought-provoking creations.

His latest single “Sinner” is a call for inner strength and poetic freedom. Driving the artist to reclaim their power and transcend inner and external boundaries. Channeling energy from personal experiences, Street Fever boldly ventures into temples, art institutions, churches and even the headquarters of the Latter Day Saints, adorning these spaces with renaissance poses, shredding art and dousing themselves with water while fully masked. They felt compelled to document a handful of these thought provoking acts while they toured the US in order to give viewers a glimpse into a different mode of expression and performance they’re known for. This video is more of a micro documentary showcasing their highly energetic, disruptive shows and poetic expressions. Sinner is a testament to these acts they feel compelled to share along with their ongoing journey of creative expression and self discovery. 

ROKI emerged onto the music scene with a distinctive sound that blended unique melodies and poignant lyrics. Her journey began to take a definitive shape with the release of her debut album, “MOTHER,” on April 22, 2022. The album made an indelible mark, securing the #17 spot for most added new music on non-commercial North American radio stations in its inaugural week. The influence of her music reverberated across several North American city charts, a testament to the resonance of her unique sonic identity.

Accompanying the album were four visually captivating music videos, each a testament to ROKI’s commitment to delivering a multi-sensory experience for her audience. Notably, the video for “Willing” garnered significant attention, amassing over 100,000 views on YouTube and solidifying ROKI as a rising force in the alternative pop scene.

Building on the success of her debut, ROKI unveiled her follow-up album, “Lovable,” on November 17, 2023. The album featured standout singles such as “The One,” “Hands Up,” and “Natural,” all of which received positive acclaim. One media outlet lauded “Hands Up” as a “blend of fiery blues with fierce soul…and stirring vocals, this jam is a vivacious groove,” while another described it as an “emotionally profound surrender to preserving love.” ROKI’s ability to infuse her music with both depth and energy further solidified her reputation as an artist with a unique perspective and an undeniable talent for storytelling.

Inviting some of the finest alternative acts from across the land to appear in the city on Saturday 23rd March, a slew of exciting new names have been added to the bill today.

Among those, is the genre-defying Peckham singer-songwriter and producer SAM AKPRO. Currently receiving A-list rotation on BBC 6 Music with his newest masterstroke “Death By Entertainment”, Clash recently praised Akpro’s work as “a subversive fusion of post-rock, jazz, funk, and no-wave… a sound that fuses far-flung influences without limitation he is more than equipped to go the distance”. Major success beckons this year, catch him here while you can.

Plus, as something of an exclusive, Connecticut alt/rock heroes OVLOV will be steering their first ever UK tour into Bristol for this year’s festival. The cult band fronted by guitarist/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Steve Hartlett first made waves back in 2009 with debut EP ‘Crazy Motorcycle Jump’ before cementing their status with a trio of lauded albums in ‘Am’ (2013), ‘Tru’ (2018), and ‘Buds’ (2021) over the last decade. Bringing their immense catalogue to the live stage this March, this is a must-see.

Bringing you more new names you need in your life in 2024, Ritual Union has also confirmed appearances from GARDEN CENTRE, a band whose oddball brand of pop has already sealed the approval of one Frank Ocean; plus London-via-Warsaw risers MM’99 who will be laying down their hypnotic synth-pop sounds; while Bristol homegrown talent PEM will be transfixing crowds with smoky serenades that blend ethereal arrangements and intricate taletelling.

PLUS, keeping the tempo on turbo-mode into the early hours, the festival has invited MINOR CONFLICT to bring their thing to the official after party. Box of frogs mad, the Squid-affiliated Bristol band create a unique combination of post-punk and post-folk using a harp (yes really), bass, drums, trumpet, synthesiser, and surrealist vocals once described by So Young magazine as “disjointed siren call warbles over two low-pitched notes that sound like some far away car alarm at 3am”. Brace yourself, and go out with a bang at Ritual Union 2024.

Sometimes, Late At Night is the stunning, genre-traversing debut from drumming virtuoso, Jharis Yokley. Yokley-who has worked with everyone from Solange and Chance the Rapper to Ani DiFranco and DJ Premier-calls upon his jazz-informed chops and hip-hop sensibilities to craft this colorful and adventurous album. Like many great works of art, Sometimes, Late At Night was initially inspired by a breakup. 

“So, the album’s mainly about this relationship,” Yokley explains. “It’s not like that I regret ending it, but I knew it had to happen. But reminiscing back on those times, I was wondering if I made a mistake.”

The inevitable fear and uncertainty that follows a breakup is palpable throughout the album’s 10 tracks. The lyrics are minimal, often taking the form of brief lines that are sung repeatedly like a self-soothing mantra. Yokley’s words throughout the record are sparse but each song conveys its own rich world of emotion. The lyrics on songs like “Friends”, “Move On” and “Miss You”, feel like things that we say to comfort ourselves in those quiet, private moments when we’re at our lowest.  

The album drops us directly into the fire with its opener “Back and Forth”. Here, Yokley’s friend and collaborator, José James takes lead vocal with a simple plea “We say we won’t, but we go back and forth again”. As Yokley’s drums erupt to the foreground, Japanese keyboard maestro BIGYUKI lays down a fiery synth lead. Amidst this maelstrom of sound, James escorts us into that painfully gray period of a breakup when the relationship is dead, but the love still lingers. 

While Yokley’s collaborators like BIGYUKI, José James and Taali all add crucial elements to the project, the process of crafting Sometimes, Late At Night began in solitude. Inspired by hip-hop legends like J. Dilla, Yokley found himself holed up in his room, pouring himself into a batch of homemade beats that would later form the album’s foundation. 

“So, obviously in March of 2020, everybody had a lot of free time.” Yokley recalls. “I was just in my bedroom, on my laptop making a lot of beats at the time. I was using Logic and a lot of my beats were sample-based. I would make beats with the samples and then take away the samples and try to come up with my own lyrics and melodies to these beats. Sometimes it would just be me on the keyboard picking a sound I like, or making a sound that I feel sounds cool. And then just playing around until I find a cool melody.”

The Hails expand upon their debut album with the release of What’s Your Motive (Deluxe). Further waxing their penchant for well-polished experimentation and all-consuming storytelling, the deluxe album features two new tracks, fan-favorite “Stay,” and a remix of “Fiona” by Magic City Hippies — Stream.

Originally released in September of 2023, the band’s debut record is an orbit of grief and reconciliation over growing pains, both individually and with each other. The two new tracks “Swat the Sun” and “All the Leaves” are tender cuts that fit the album’s progressively zooming out view of what happens when you break the cycle of complacency, but with an even more exposed point of view. 

“‘Swat the Sun’ was a track that appeared to me right after we played Okeechobee Fest in 2022,” shares bandleader Robbie Kingsley. “On the way back home from the festival, I was irritated about the hot, Florida sun blasting through my window and I uttered to everyone in the car, ‘I wish I could swat the sun.’ It sounds insane but that’s actually what happened. Immediately after I blurted it out, I told Franco that it sounded like a cool lyric, so I wrote it in my phone to save for later. I woke up the next morning with a melody in my head so I grabbed a guitar and figured out the chords as fast as I could in fear of losing what I woke up humming.”

He continues, “In a way, it was the song that actually helped craft the narrative for the album. Most of the songs on the record were completed by the time I wrote ‘Swat the Sun,’ but the line ‘don’t leave the light on that we rely on’ really struck a chord with me in my life at that point. The waves of complacency were heavy on my mind and I was trying to break out of it desperately. This song felt like a major step forward in my own personal music journey and the album felt like a massive step forward for us as a band. Including ‘Swat the Sun’ and ‘All the Leaves’ feels like a perfect bow on the beautiful box that ‘What’s Your Motive’ has been for us.”

The guys reminisce about the early days of booking their own shows, performing terribly on stage and punk rock credibility. Dexter talks about cancer treatment and immunotherapies. James recalls the time he saved one of his own juror’s lives in court. Blackball takes things too far and almost gets kicked out of the studio.

Toronto-based singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Chris LaRocca has collaborated with cinematographer, writer, and director James Arthurs on the emotional short film, “linger” out today. Drawn to LaRocca’s song of the same name, off his latest album i cried my eyes out, Arthurs felt it had the potential to soundtrack a powerful visual piece.
 
Finding inspiration in the life and work of Richard Crandell, the late guitarist who battled essential tremor disorder, Arthurs captured the difficult experience of losing the ability to do the thing he loved most. The short follows LaRocca’s trajectory as a musician, from his glory days on stage to his darkest moments consumed by tremors. “linger” profoundly explores themes of loss and community, with love prevailing throughout.
 
James Arthurs shares, “This story is inspired by the life and work of guitarist Richard Crandell, as well as my own life. I wasn’t destined for film but became immersed in it as a side effect. I had been suddenly confronted with a condition that left me unable to speak at all and for what I was told would be indefinitely. No longer able to sing, I considered quieter avenues: carpentry, pottery and image making. I fell in love with and found myself again in filmmaking, and then, a vocal cord surgery and a couple years later, thankfully my voice too. “linger” observes the experience of loss as it relates to what one creates and the way love carries through; what matters is knowing you feel something, however it gets to you and whatever the form of expression.
 
Chris LaRocca adds, “I wrote “linger” at my lowest lows and felt like Richard’s story and the associated themes embodied the sentiment of the song.

Recently named as “one-to-watch” by BBC Introducing and as “an artist you have to meet” by Rolling Stone Magazine, Peri Rae is a singer-songwriter currently on the lips of various music tastemakers. This is for good reason as she is injecting the contemporary folk scene with music that is so much more than sweet-sounding folk tunes, for she shows great personality and creative flair through today’s single.

South London’s rising alt-pop star, Lauren Dejey, returns with a radiant new single ‘Till I Wilt’, made alongside her long-term producers, spacemen. Heavy in static noise and imaginative lyricism, Dejey delivers yet another immersive song that is both sonically gentle yet sharp in all its distorted production.

Leeds based newcomer Karina Stone shares her debut single, which sonically embodies the hazy ambiance of an ‘afterparty’. Through Karina’s descriptive lyricism, she vividly paints a picture of the scene, and in doing so encapsulates the essence of youth and heartache.

Rising singer-songwriter and guitarist Sam Walwyn shares his brand new single ‘Overtime’, which is the next single to make up part of his nearing EP ‘Can We Restart’. This upbeat, guitar led indie-pop tune showcases Sam’s expansive talents as a multi-faceted creative today and places him in a solid position going into the new year.

The strange states we find ourselves in while growing are where Nicky MacKenzie’s soulful new EP MORALS was born. Leaving behind the safe familiarity of adolescence, MORALS is an exploration of the emotional landscape the 23-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter has traversed in the years since her debut album, 2018’s Honeydew. In that time, MacKenzie has left her hometown, navigated shifting relationships, graced the stages of huge festivals, and played intimate shows. In the background, she’s worked on new collaborations and participated in prestigious songwriting workshops, constantly pushing the boundaries of her artistry. The tracks on MORALS are a record of this growth.

Growing up in a small island community off the coast of British Columbia encouraged MacKenzie to focus on the arts at a young age, starting with piano at age seven. Afternoons spent at her mother’s music store allowed Nicky to experiment with different instruments: drums, violin, and harp were all tried out before she found guitar at age ten. She taught herself some chords, wrote her first song, and never looked back. Early exposure to a diversity of genres – from classic rock to film scores to the legends of Motown – gives MacKenzie a musical dexterity well beyond her years, her sound seamlessly blends old-school soul with modern pop sensibilities.

On MORALS, MacKenzie’s commanding vocals weave into hypnotic R&B melodies, drawing inspiration from the likes of Charlotte Day Wilson, Daniel Caesar, and Hozier. Adding layers to Nicky’s vision is LA-based production duo Likeminds, who infused the EP with body-moving synths and percussion. The EP moves from the quiet, introspective crackle of “Lost and Found” to powerhouse pop offerings like “I Should Go” and “No Man’s Land,” a dynamic, Dua Lipa-esque ride erupting with vibrant brass. Tracks “Grown” and “Comfortable” examine the space between adolescence and young adulthood, questioning what it will feel like to finally arrive in a place of self-reliance.

MORALS establishes MacKenzie as a gifted songwriter capable of both hauntingly poignant restraint and irresistibly catchy pop melodies. By focusing on the universalities that shape us—breakups, self-doubt, nights out—Nicky leaves space for her audience to unpack their own experiences. There is both grit and grandeur on MORALS, showcasing Nicky’s indelible talent for crafting soul-moving songs that linger in the heart, body, and mind.

In the spring of 2023, Kojak entered the studio of acclaimed musician and producer David James Allen to record what was initially intended to be a single tune – “Cigarettes & Whiskey.” Little did they know that this encounter would mark the beginning of a liberating creative process. The energy, sound quality, and creativity that David brought to the sessions captivated the band, leading them to expand their vision and produce a full album under his record label, Littleknown Records. The self-titled album,due out February 22nd, 2024, showcases the culmination of Kojak’s evolution and dedication to their craft and high energy and at times heavy sound.

Over the next six months, the band immersed themselves in the writing and recording of seven additional songs that would complement their initial release. Drawing inspiration from a wealth of half-polished riffs and spontaneous jam sessions, the members of Kojak embarked on a collaborative journey to create an eight-song, genre-spanning sophomore album.

While each track on the album possesses its own musical identity, common themes are thread through the tapestry of Kojak’s songwriting. Melancholy, excess, and a yearning for change resonate throughout the collection, establishing a thematic unity. One standout track, “556,” recounts a harrowing tale of a bad acid trip in their old apartment, delivering a heavy and progressive vibe. In contrast, “Wake up when the morning comes” explores the melancholy of dreading the morning and facing reality, enveloped in a more laid-back musical atmosphere. Together, these songs represent different facets of the same emotional spectrum.

Kojak’s musical journey began in 2018 with the release of their EP ‘Mac’s Place’, followed by their debut album ‘Sure’ (2022)  with a focus on heavy riff-based rock ‘n’ roll, a foundation they still embrace. However, their musical horizons expanded, incorporating elements of roots, pop, and blues that each band member brought to the table. Their diverse musical influences, ranging from classic heavy rock like Led Zeppelin and the Raconteurs to contemporary artists like Wilco and the Tragically Hip, permeate their sound and can be heard like ghosts jamming with the band, on the musical journey that is their newest self-titled album.

Splash House has announced the initial details for its 2024 season, set to return to the storied poolside locales of The Renaissance, Margaritaville, and Saguaro Hotels on August 9-11 and August 16-18. Flaunting some of electronic music’s most in vogue artists amidst the historic charm of Palm Springs, this resort style music festival offers an unforgettable desert escape with a distinct poolside energy.

Splash House will return its focus to its famed double August weekender, a back-to-back session that has been celebrated by devotées of the brand and newcomers alike. This evolution will make the desert pilgrimage into the ultimate summer’s last stand celebration, offering two distinct experiences and lineups.

Splash House remains a reflection of the natural and cultural allure of Palm Springs, guiding attendees from its mid-century modern inspired stages, to off-site experiences around the city like Drag Brunch, Tequila Tasting, and Flea Markets, onwards to its iconic after-hours soirée at the infamous Palm Springs Air Museum. The Air Museum offers performances from some of the world’s biggest stars under the expansive desert sky with vintage airplanes and the rolling peaks of the San Jacinto mountains as its backdrop.

Fresh package offerings will be available this year in addition to those previously offered at the Renaissance, Margaritaville, and Saguaro Hotels. This includes rooms at L3 Oasis Hotel just across the street from Margaritaville, known for its upscale lodging at an affordable price. Nick Schofield’s Ambient Ensemble sees the Canadian composer and synth maven expanding his solo practice with an ensemble, adding his signature ambient essence to contemporary-classical and electronic music.

Where his previous two albums (Water Sine, Glass Gallery) were entirely solo endeavours and synth-focused, Ambient Ensemble invites gregarious group play. The compositions feature a chamber ensemble of grounding double bass and sliding fretless flourishes, warm violin and soothing vocals, with convivial accents of clarinet. Compelled by natural elements and intuitive composition, Ambient Ensemble is a refreshing assembly of acoustic works by Nick Schofield.

In January 2020, the album began with patient piano improvisations recorded in a church during deep Canadian winter nights. The sparse piano sketches were then slowed to half-speed and layered with classic Moog and Juno-6 synthesizers. After the project received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2023, the ensemble was formed with luminaries of the Gatineau/Ottawa music scene, featuring Yolande Laroche (voice, clarinet), Mika Posen (violin) and Philippe Charbonneau (fretless electric bass, double bass).

Citing the blissful spaciousness of pioneering new age flutist Joanna Brouk as a central inspiration, Ambient Ensemble lands delicately within the contemporary cannon alongside artists like M. Sage, Blue Lake, Ana Roxanne and Joseph Shabason.

Nicole Zignago is a singer and songwriter who has spent most of her time between Peru, Los Angeles and Boston, making her musical proposal a refreshing mix of current Pop. She began singing and writing songs at a young age and upon graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2019 she is signed to Warner Chappell Latin.

Nicole has a captivating voice and a special sensitivity when writing; She tells stories in a unique way and comes to revolutionize Pop with her musical project.

After having stood out as a composer and having participated in hits such as “1,2,3” (Sofia Reyes ft Jason Derulo and DeLaGheto), in May 2020 she officially released her first single, titled Preguntas (?), entering the Viral 50 Peru within one month of release. Then in August she continued the charts of the 50 most viral in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Mexico, Honduras, Uruguay and Nicaragua with “Ella (Remix de Ellas)” with Pi5zion and Keia Os. In 2023 Nicole releases new music, the first single being “No Quiero Olvidarte”, during June of the same year she goes on tour with Jesse and Joy through the United States and Canada, and participated in the Tecate Live Out festival in the city of Monterrey.

Nicole just released her new single “26” (ni tarde ni temprano) Feb 1st. The irresistible acoustic indie pop single “talks about how important it is to make peace with time and how life never ends up happening like you wrote it down in your diary when you were 16. Society is always trying to make us fit in an agenda that is not healthy to follow…that’s why I wrote this song. To remind myself I’m never early or late, I’m always on time,” confides the artist.  She is set to tour with JP Sax throughout the US. She will be part of the 2024 edition of Tecate Emblema Festival in Mexico City and will be headlining her own shows in Peru and Mexico.  Nicole’s much-anticipated debut album is slated to release late April 2024.

Münster Germany–  Emo punk/hardcore outfit SHORELINE have released new single ‘Workaround’.
 

The track shows a new musical side of the band, throwing together fast emo-riffs over slow drums, danceable disco beats while still maintaining their musical roots close to punk and features Chris Cresswell, who turned into a friend of the band after playing several shows together with both his bands The Flatliners and Hot Water Music. 

‘Workaround’ is about the slow, but definite process of seeing your peers grow older, become parents and settle in a different stage of life. The song is an encouragement to find confidence in your life-choices, understanding that there’s a different approach to happiness for every person. 

New Orleans-based duo sfam are back with ‘listen here’ out now via HypnoVizion. ‘listen here’ marks the second single off sfam’s upcoming not playin’ EP, due out this Spring.

Embracing the off-kilter antics that have consistently set them apart, sfam have delivered a wayward original that defies the conventionalities of bass music. Askew melodies run rampant through entangling basslines as ‘listen here’ twists and turns with an unruly, erratic nature. “To maintain the freshness and creativity, we took less than a month to write and record the album,” the band continues. “We built a recording studio in our manager Joe’s guest house and tracked everything live together, while Jack produced it all in-house. While recording, we implemented a three take per song rule in order to capture the live essence and avoid overthinking the music. We wanted this record to accurately capture the new excitement and freedom we were living in, while also conveying the pent up emotions of grinding in New York City for the past 2+ years to make this dream a reality.”

Acid Tongue is an American garage band heavily influenced by classic soul, punk & psychedelic rock. Formed in a damp Seattle basement in 2015, the band immediately hit the road, extensively touring the US & Europe and refining their unique brand of rock & roll. Consisting of a core duo—singer/songwriter Guy Keltner & drummer/vocalist Ian Cunningham—the band also includes numerous touring & studio musicians scattered between Paris, New York, London, Mexico City, & Los Angeles, with a rotating roster that seems to grow larger by the day.

In 2015, Acid Tongue established their own label, Freakout Records, and in 2017 the band released their debut album, aptly titled Babies. The album is a soulful, stoney, heartfelt approach to modern psychedelia. Their 2020 sophomore album, Bullies, expanded upon the themes of their debut, cementing the band as the Pacific Northwest’s most unique garage-rock proprietors. For their third studio album, Arboretum, the band recruited veterans from the psychedelic rock scene during production, resulting in first-rate collaborations with artists such as Death Valley GirlsNaked Giants, and Canadian singer-songwriter Calvin Love.

Acid Tongue’s fourth full-length, Acid on the Dance Floor, due out Spring 2024, showcases their now signature sound and a back-to-basics approach to rock music. Incorporating elements of glam, R&B and post-punk, the album is a loud, funky and chaotic acid trip that redefines “the Seattle sound”.

Los Angeles cinematic garage rock group The Drives make their first release of the new year with “Maybe I’m a Masochist” — out now via UnderCurrent. The third single from their upcoming second EP, the new track captures a sense of passivity in both the narrative and pace of the song. “This song is essentially about becoming complacent in a failing relationship.” shares frontman Andrew Levin. “In my last relationship, I had become so comfortable with being a part of an unhealthy dynamic that I didn’t even realize how unhappy I was. I was constantly focused on fixing a bunch of little problems that I never stepped back and saw how messed up everything had become. This song is basically about the guilt and regret I had for not realizing how bad things were.”

On the heels of their viral hit, “Wassup Gway,” which swept socials and topped Billboard’s TikTok chart, rising Atlanta-based hip hop duo Famous Sally & YB release their debut project, The Truth. Natalie Del Carmen is a 22-year-old musician, songwriter and artist native to Los Angeles. Her musical path has been an acute exploration of the Folk-Americana genres, interwoven with some exciting detours into the realm of pop music at a former time. 

Her debut 11-track album, Bloodline, was released in March 2023 and delves into themes of fleeting love, diligence and the passage of time. Del Carmen’s succeeding EP, Tandem Songs, signals a shift in her musical direction toward the warm embrace of Americana. “Achilles’ Dire End,” produced by Billboard Chart-Topping engineer and songwriter Zack Burke, is a playful tune that explores one’s willingness to love, while “Hollywood Reviews” delves into the modern-day phenomenon of excessive screen time and the insidious habit of comparing one’s life to others in the digital world. Traveling back and forth from LA to Nashville in the summer months, she was lucky enough to work with Wyoming native, Coburn Larsen, for a second time to create “Love in Vain.”

Having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA at the age of 21, she immersed herself in the art of Songwriting. Natalie is currently working on her next project in LA, and dedicates many of her waking hours to mastering her new favorite instrument: her grandfather’s 1930s banjo.

Where previously, Tom became known for powerful accounts of other people’s stories, including a friend’s battle with drugs (‘Leave A Light On’), and articulating his own relatable feelings for his now wife (‘Just You & I’); on his new album he now finds himself writing abouthis own personal struggles and anxieties, creative challenges, sadness and moments of despair. It is a sometimes visceral account of who Tom Walker is in 2024, hence the title: I Am.

In a world full of over produced and heavily programmed radio friendly pop songs which are chucked out by way of factory it’s absolutely refreshing to be sitting back with headphones on and experiencing “Gold Control”. Lost is the art of the album, the experience of an album. Not here. This is JEEN’s 4th LP this decade and disappoint it does not. In fact it delights. Gold Control glides along the same trajectory as its predecessors while maintaining its own identity. Grunge. Garage. Psych-rock. Punk. Tinges of Shoegaze. Her influences continue to shine as she crafts them into her own vehicle with ease while removing herself from the often times dreaded genre labelling. Hazy, heady, hedonistic and hopeful.

Despite the lyric “It’s all I got inside me” lead single “Just Shadows” which is set for release on 7th July is the perfect first firm foot forward from this luminous ten tracker.  It’s quick frantic pace bounces along and transports the listener to those communal sweaty nights in dodgy body packed underground clubs with the band five feet away making all feel as one.

“Hold My Head Up Higher” sees JEEN join creative forces once again with long-time collaborator Canadian indie musician and producer Ian Blurton. Ian has taken the role of co-producer on JEEN’s last five albums and their strength in working together shines on this track. Its swirling chorus shimmers along the flesh and actually induces frisson with ease which is a hard sensation to help facilitate through song.

There will be a total of four singles lifted to promote the album. Another one being the lyrically confrontational “Making Me Mad” which bounds along proudly with two fingers firmly up and an assured sense of one’s older self.

Also slated for single status “So What” just might be the emotional centrepiece of the album. “Can you stay another minute, sit me on the couch, talk to me until I pass out, and if I had it my way, I’d lie there and that’s where we’d stay, don’t wake me up”. It’s hazy dream like longing for connection is emotionally relatable as JEEN’s softer vocals guide us along gently through the moment as if taking us by hand.

Other moments where JEEN really shines include “Good Omen” which crashes about the primal highway in all its fuzzy glory, “Give Myself Away” with it’s dark, ethereal howling echoes and “Rain Low” which finds itself adding a more vulnerable and delicate layer to the album.

Take a deep dive. Settle in. Immerse yourself. It’ll be raucous and aggressive at some points and harmonious at others with promises of a soft landing.

Mitchell Makoons (He/Him) is a Roots/Rock musician from Brandon, Manitoba. Mitchell started playing guitar at the age of seven to accompany his grandfather and brother playing Metis fiddle tunes. Mitchell continues to be an active member of the Manitoba Metis community. The songs Mitchell writes incorporate traditional Ojibway music and culture with modern influences.

Mitchell has toured several times across Western Canada and has begun to break in the Canadian festival scene. In 2023 Mitchell performed at Dauphin’s Countryfest, Ste. Madeline Metis Days, All Folk’d Up Music Festival and Winnipeg Fringe Festival, to name a few.

Makoons has released 4 singles and 1 EP to date. He has received radio play across Canada, United States and on Sirius XM. 3 of Mitchell’s singles have made it to the top 10 on the Indigenous Music countdown with “Still My Father’s Son” peaking at No. 5. Mitchell has been nominated for 5 Manitoba Country Music Awards, 3 in 2022 and 2 in 2023.
