Built around his soulful, worn-in voice and wrapped in tender harmonies, Alex Coley & Afterlove explore the elemental tension between joy and pain; heartache and healing; what was and what will be. Alex Coley is a Nova Scotia-based songwriter and indie-folk musician with an affinity for novelty, big feelings and good questions. Music has always been a compulsion for Alex – his headspace an enduring and immutable arc of melody. It became an obsession after a long drive across the Maritimes with his dad. It was the first time he heard Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now’ over the crackly speakers from the back seat of his dad’s red Ford Aerostar. Like all things worth enduring, Alex’s relationship with music has been complex, terrifying and inevitable.

In his debut album The Arc, made possible by a Canada Council grant, Alex’s thoughtful songwriting uses the personal as a portal into the universal. His vulnerable and intimate lyrics will be sure to dredge up feelings you forgot were there – inviting you to gracefully move through melancholy. The deeply emotional, stirring songs offer a clarity you can often only find when you get really quiet; at the end of a long winding road travelled alone. His songs seek to articulate what we lack the vocabulary for, helping us make sense of the things that often don’t.

The album was written in isolation, but came to life in community; it is alive with the people and landscapes that were foundational to its creation. Most of the recording happened in a small studio in rural Nova Scotia during the heat of the summer, nestled amongst an old birch forest, with all six bandmates crammed between an old CRT TV and an Atari game console. Alex and his bandmates, Braden Kammermans (bass), Ted Morris (drums), Connor Robins (lead guitar), Sarah Roberts (harmony), and Dan Richards (keys), each brought their unique sound and perspective to the album. The Arc was produced by bandmate and friend, Braden Kammermans (Sleepy Kicks), who encouraged the disruption of folk cliches by offering a less predictable and more scuzzy sound.

The Arc arrives at the end of this locked-down, fearful era when gazing backward was all we had, serving as a beautiful reminder of the transformative power of introspection. The songs that emerge are both melancholic and hopeful, capturing themes of nostalgia, resilience, heartbreak and unexpected clarity. Alex Coley & Afterlove’s music reminds us that the darkest, windiest days are often the days we feel deeper and love harder.

Speaking on the story behind the making of ‘Before You’, Cristina Hart shares; ‘Growing up with parents that aren’t together is always a bit hard to wrap your head around as a kid. There’s always this secret hope that one day they’ll get back together until one day you realize that that’s never going to happen. I think it’s easy to think you’ve done something wrong to cause this as a child and that can really impact how you view relationships as an adult. I’m so lucky to have found someone that’s shown me what this kind love looks like and I wanted to write this as a little diary entry to show that despite what’s happened in your past, you are deserving of love and, if you find the right person, you can still have and nurture a healthy relationship.’

 the prolific German dance music duo andhim, who have produced and performed alongside each other for 14 years, release their brilliant revamp of Olive’s iconic 1990s hit “You’re Not Alone.” The new single, which also serves as the duo’s return to Diplo’s Higher Ground label following their 2021 EP and appearance on his self-titled 2022 album, is out now. 

Originally released in 1997 as a breakbeat track, andhim molds the beloved hook into a modern dancefloor weapon, masterfully toeing the line between house and techno. The versatile nature of the production makes it ideal for stages large and intimate, and it was even a highlight of Diplo’s remarkable Antarctica set earlier this year

The release comes in the midst of their current tour through Europe and North America, hitting clubs in Spain, Turkey, Austria, and Switzerland before heading across the Atlantic for Miami Music Week and shows in New York City and Montreal. 

Simon Haehnel & Tobias Müller launched their andhim project in 2010. They’ve accumulated a staggering collection of high-profile collaborations and remixes, working alongside artists such as Diplo, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Theophilus London, and more. andhim have held residencies in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Berlin. In 2020, they released their award-winning documentary Miles To Go, a deep dive into the lives of the duo as they toured the West Coast of the US in a camper van, playing small clubs along the way. andhim wrote the score for the film, which won “Best Score” at Swindon Independent Film Fest. The soundtrack, along with most of their other work, was released on andhim’s own label Superfriends, which has also featured artists like Roman Flügel, Acid Pauli, and more. 

 inspired electronic music extraordinaire Kasbo announces his first new body of work in four years, The Learning of Urgency. The project is Kasbo’s third studio album to date and will arrive via ODESZA’s revered Foreign Family Collective label on June 7. Along with the news comes two brand new singles, “Drift” and “Atlantis,” the latter featuring Shallou and Swedish singer BJOERN.

For Kasbo, The Learning Of Urgency is an extremely important concept. The songwriting orbits around slowing down, as the past few years of his life have been ridden with a sense of acute pressure, manifesting into a subconscious compulsion to constantly achieve and do more. The result nearly cost him his career, as he developed rare, stress-related hearing loss. The natural slowdown of the pandemic put these stressors into perspective, and through addressing them, he was able to get back on track, personally and professionally, and write this new album. 

Last year, Kasbo returned triumphantly with a pair of singles (“The Way You Had Me” and “Alive”), marking his first solo original releases in three years since his previous album, The Making of a Paracosm. Now, he’s ready to unveil his most meaningful work to date. Previewing The Learning Of Urgency with two new singles, “Drift” and “Atlantis,” Kasbo himself elaborates on how the aquatic nature of these two tracks ties into the album concept:

My new album is inspired by the feeling of being submerged in water. Underwater, the world moves slowly, sounds fade, and there’s this feeling of stillness. To me, there was this direct relation to being on a stormy ocean surface, trying desperately to keep your head above water. Whereas the world beneath the surface represented this stillness where you allowed yourself to move at a slower pace and appreciate the beauty of things around you. And sure, as much as you need to move forward and build something in life, you also need to swim up to the surface and take that next breath. I think it’s important not to let that thought consume us and prevent us from appreciating those moments of tranquility underwater.”      — Kasbo

Singer-songwriter Cory Wells recently announced his brand new album ‘Harboring The Hurt I’ve Caused’ to be released on 15th March 2024 via Pure Noise Records and now shares a second single, “Natural Disaster”.

Speaking about the album Cory said “I didn’t know if this album was going to come out of me.  I have always written from trauma. It can be exhausting, debilitating, and sometimes unhealthy.  This record is no different. It can be difficult to admit that the problems in your life may be no one’s fault but your own. The first album was just one side of the story. “Harbouring the Hurt I’ve Caused” is all about the damage that I have done and how it feels to live with my mistakes every day. The creation of meaningful art can only occur in moments of despair or triumph; there is no grey area.

iskwē | ᐃᐢᑫᐧᐤ (short for waseskwan iskwew, meaning “blue sky woman”) is an award-winning Indigenous creator whose catalogue drips of a spectrum of emotions and is powered by resilience. Following several seasons of high highs being met with low lows, the Cree Métis artist retreated south to Mexico and inward to her soul to paint a 10-song collection that illustrates the gut-wrenching roller coaster ride that has been her recent life.

nīna, the opus of iskwē’s rebirth, is the Cree translation for “me” and was chosen as the title of her fourth solo album as an ode to the profoundly autobiographical elements. The album is the sonic manifestation of the divine feminine explored through vignettes of love, passion, anger, betrayal, and loss.

To bring her incredible stories to life, iskwē teamed up with 10x Grammy-nominated producer Damian Taylor (Björk, The Killers, Bomba Estereo.) Damian also co-wrote a selection of the songs, including the Top 20 Alt-Rock charting lead single “I Get High” ft. Nina Hagen. The culmination of their sounds resulted in an offering of ethereal eclecticism, reminiscent of the sensuality of late 90s R&B with the most delicious twist of Esthero.

Allow nīna to seduce you as you bathe in the rhythmic beats and feel hints of tropical sea breezes and the electrical current of Mexico City. This album is a realist’s journey through the deep, visceral experience of love.

nīna follows iskwē’s travels back to herself in real-time. The opening track, “A Little Piece,” sets the scene with a look behind the mask of someone lonely and overwhelmed by an extra-marital affair. We get caught up to the seemingly insurmountable crossroads where iskwē currently resides, and thus begins an incredible auditory journey of resilience.

The album then escorts us along the winding path of leaving a marriage to finding oneself in the passionate throes of being against new skin and the incomparable delight of brand-new love. The middle of the album offers your first climax with “The Other Side,” a deliciously insatiable introspective into sex—the intoxicating, back-breaking kind.

The journey then dives quickly into the depths of despair and then up to the heights of triumph with “I Get High,” a whimsically gothic tale of being torn apart by strangers and using every ounce of strength to defend and rebuild. Through the album’s final tracks, we collectively rise from beneath the weight of cumulative tragedies as iskwē bookends the album with the elegance of humble triumph. 

“Exhale,” nīna’s final track, offers the retro sensibilities inspired by David Bowie, laced with the unmistakable cadence of Indigenous percussion.

iskwē’s sound is incomparable, and nīna will leave you in awe of her ability to weave together life’s journey with compelling and undeniable artistry. It’s an ode to the journey home to ourselves, the most beautiful odyssey cultivated by imagination and devastatingly beautiful lived experience.

Her 2017 debut album, The Fight Within, was Juno-nominated for Indigenous Album of the Year and garnered her a spot on the Polaris Music Prize Long List. 2019’s acākosīk features the powerful single  “Little Star” and took home the Juno Award for Music Video of the Year (2020). In 2021, she released The Stars – a reimagination of her album acākosīk. The independent release featured new arrangements (by Darren Fung) of six songs with iskwē accompanied by a trio of piano, cello, and violin recorded live-off-the-floor at Revolution Recording in Toronto and a dramatic orchestral reimagining of “Night Danger (Lovers Mix)” recorded with the FILMharmonic Orchestra (Prague). In 2022, she released Mother Love with Tom Wilson – a collaborative album reflecting the nature of love and culture as the pair’s individual contributions blended together seamlessly.

Known for her impactful stage presence as she incorporates dance and multimedia to present a completely engulfing and cathartic experience, iskwē has performed hundreds of shows worldwide at iconic locations, including Canada’s Parliament Hill, in New York City at the Met and SummerStage in Central Park, and beyond for the King and Queen of Sweden, Reeperbahn in Germany, and Border Crossing’s Origins Festival in England. She received the Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Award in 2022 and is an ambassador for the PRS Keychange initiative. iskwē is originally from Treaty 1 and is currently spending her time in Montreal, QC.

M’Grasker are a coven of humanoid meat sacks forged in the Vats of Creation by Dr. Gorp, himself. Their mission: to Rock. However, they are also permitted to Roll. Human terminology might define them as a “band”, however they would be more accurately described as Biological Property of M’Graskorp Unlimited Enterprises and Subsidiaries of the GlanGlan Group.

Much of M’Grasker’s DNA was salvaged from the backstage areas and bathrooms of seedy Toronto music venues and transferred via Scienetic Quantum Hurtlage to the M’Graskorp Labs, located just beyond Space and Time (and slightly to the left). 

There, the illustrious Dr. Gorp folded the DNA into his patented bio-muck through perverse osmosis, adding a large scoop of adrenaline and dashes of other substances that can’t be named, much less comprehended.

After releasing their curt 69 track EP “Under the Righteous Sky” in 2022, the band endured a brief transmogrification when canine DNA entered the Vats, resulting in the dog themed follow up “Must Love Doggy” in 2023. In the ensuing battle for control of M’Graskcorp Unlimited Enterprises, the canine iteration of M’Grasker was destroyed, and the loveable lads from Lab 7 were rebirthed in nearly human form from the primordial ooze.

Multi-talented singer, songwriter, and artist Kayla DiVenere shares her new single, “Small Talk,” out today on Sound Factory Records.

Following recent hit singles like “Date Myself” and “Jumping the Gun,” the LA-based artist delivers another punchy alt-pop earworm with her new single, “Small Talk.” Kayla created the song with producer/songwriter Jordan Witzigreuter (The Ready Set) and songwriters Maia Kelly and Zach DeGaetano.

At just 20-years-old, Kayla’s catchy yet introspective lyrics perfectly capture the highs and lows of young adulthood. On “Small Talk,” her honeyed vocals tell the story of a secret crush she has on her brother’s best friend. 

“I created ‘Small Talk’ in my longing to have more than a fleeting 5 minute conversation with my crush every time he would come over,” she opens up. “My imagination ran wild and I found myself aching for something like a John Hughes romance movie about a secret love, complete with a boombox outside my window and a mixtape of his favorite songs. After rewatching every romance movie I could find, I decided that instead of torturing myself, I should write this song in an attempt to pour my heart out and make sense of my desire for something more than small talk.”

Your Future Ghost is the new synth pop/rock musical project of Billboard-charting singer/songwriter, musician and actress Kate Voegele and the multifaceted songwriter, producer, composer and actor Michael Grubbs. The duo first met on the set, acting in the popular CW hit TV series One Tree Hill. Striking up a fast friendship and mutual creative respect, the two began collaborating musically over zoom during the pandemic.  After months of studio sessions in Austin, Texas, intermingled with lively backyard taco breaks, Your Future Ghost was born. Leading single “We’ve Got Places” is a single all about about that place where you find refuge from whatever noise is going on in the world – whether it’s an actual place, a person, or something else, I think we all have those places where we can escape the chaos and be ourselves,” confides Kate. The track features stunning layered harmonies and lush instrumentation for an enticing listen.

Meanwhile, the explosive indie dance party anthem “PRITTY” merges new wave, punk, and electro-pop, creating an intoxicating blend that explores the allure of infatuation and the lengths we go to tolerate someone’s messy behavior. Kate confides, “The song is about being a little unhinged but also irresistible. You’re self-aware enough to know you’re kind of a mess, but you also not sorry about it because you’re a God damned blast to have around. It’s kind of about just knowing that the weirdest thing about you is probably also the coolest thing about you, and not being afraid to celebrate that even if it makes some people mad or uncomfortable.”

Which isn’t easy. Liv Miraldi, acclaimed for her viral hits “Wingwoman” and “Same People,” is a songstress renowned for her distinctive style and unapologetically honest approach to her artistry. An LA-based solo artist, Liv Miraldi fuses together fresh folk and indie pop. Most well known for her distinct voice, New York Post has described Miraldi’s vocals as “intoxicatingly creepy.” Miraldi is fierce, passionate, and raw in both her intimate acoustic sets and her beat-driven pop songs.

Born Olivia Miraldi in Lorain, Ohio, she immersed herself in music from a young age. At only 7 years old, she began writing songs and putting her stories on a page. After years of crafting songs for others, Miraldi realized she had her own story to share, leading her to rediscover her artistry with a reimagined perspective. 

Her previous single, “Denver” received editorial support across all DSPs, including notable Spotify playlists, New Music Friday, Next Gen Singer-Songwriters, and Created by Women. Now, Liv Miraldi is returning with her second single “Friend of the Family”. Arguably, her best storytelling yet, “Friend of the Family,” is a haunting open letter to a parent having an affair, written from the daughter’s point of view.

In her own words, she says, “’Friend of the Family’ was something I was afraid to talk about, so I knew I had to write it. I gave myself the space to feel the full range of my emotions. The song details the complexity of infidelity through the daughter’s point of view. This sad indie bop is an instant tear jerker that is sure to bring the feels.Keep watch as she continues to unfold her narrative in her new project, “2019,” slated to release in early 2024.

YOVA release their guest-studded second release ‘Dreamcatchers’ on all services.

Marking the release, the alternative pop duo of Mark Vernon and Jova Radevska have shared a special rendition of one its featured highlights “Maybe”, with an accompanying video.

A twisted love song knotted with all the enigmas and enchantments that tie us up in the most complex relationships, “Maybe” is the final insight into YOVA’s eagerly anticipated new album.

Combining slinky post-rock guitar licks reminiscent of latter-day Radiohead with swelling string arrangements courtesy of the PJ Harvey-approved maestro Rob Ellis, YOVA describe the track as:

“A burst of chamber-pop featuring Rob Ellis’s beautiful string arrangements, the onde-Martenot, glockenspiel and baritone guitar.”

Tapping into the song’s mysterious, otherworldly qualities, it is accompanied by a fantastical themed official video by directors Thomas James Linton and Philip Reinking. Released in Europe last year, “Maybe” has already amassed over 100,000 streams and counting. It will feature alongside the band’s earlier singles “Dream Catchers”, “Hurt Like No Hurt”, “Addictions” and “Feel Your Fear” on YOVA’s ‘Dreamcatchers’ album, which is out tomorrow.

Irish singer-songwriter, come londoner, Tadhg Daly, releases his first single of the year, titled ‘How’s Your Day Been?’, which stunningly combines both raw and organic elements with a blast of electronic energy. ‘How’s Your Day Been?’ is out now via Antifragile Music.

Speaking on the story behind the track, Tadhg shares; “How’s your day been?” Is the first track from an EP that documents the journey of 2 emotionally broken and unavailable people falling in love. It’s a song for anyone that feels like they might be catching feelings for their ‘situationship’ but are too scared to admit it. It’s for anyone that is craving a more meaningful conversation than a token “how’s your day been?” before getting into someone’s bed.”

With emotive lyricism always at the heart of the music he creates, Tadhg Daly finds solace and comfort in sharing his thoughts and feelings with his audience and does so in a poetic, unique way.

‘How’s Your Day Been?’ is the follow up to Tadhg’s EP ‘Not Right For Love’, which was released October 2023, and stunningly showcased his rich, powerful vocals that tenderly lyricised the themes of grief and loss that enveloped the body of work.

Femme House Vol. 2 features all-female and female-identifying artists, including LP Giobbi herself, FEMME HOUSE Chief of Education/synth-pop artist mini bear, dancefloor dominator Mary Droppinz, inclusivity advocate Baby Weight, rising sister house duo Lisbona Sisters, and more. As LP told Billboard, “You can’t be what you can’t see,” which is why FEMME HOUSE has been a top-priority initiative for her since its launch. 

Bursting forth from Los Angeles, Kaya Stewart and Max Mercier today make their first release as the edgy pop duo, Kiss Bang, with “Horrors Of Your Hometown.” They also announce that their debut EP of the same title will be available on March 15 via Bay Street Records, the label founded by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. Taking the winding route to avoid the modern pop formulas and squeaky clean production often associated with their genre at all costs, Kiss Bang makes timeless earworms that could have been written in 1985 or 2050. 

After meeting by chance, Stewart and Mercier were immediately drawn to create together. Stewart shares, “From the minute we met we knew that we were musically kindred spirits. I think we both have qualities in our own music that make us so individual and unique, and working together created a sound that neither of us had ever heard before, but felt so true to who we were.”

Mercier elaborates that, “Kiss Bang is the biggest blessing for me as it allows me to create outside of the strict mental confines I set for myself when making music. Kaya’s music taste spans all genres and eras just like mine and she has an incredible ability to extract different sounds out of me. It’s super inspiring.”
