INsiders Guide: Razor Braids, World’s First Cinema, Scott Guild, Daughter Of A Drum, Dashboard Confessional…

Consisting of all queer women, Razor Braids‘ soaring harmonies and magnetic sound create a cathartic sound unlike any other. From performing at 2023 SXSW and 2023 Boston Calling opening for The National and Foo Fighters to receiving praise from Paper Magazine, Brooklyn Vegan, and VanyalandRazor Braids are the newest head-turning phenomenon. As of right now,  Razor Braids are gearing up for the release of their sophomore album Big Wave. A glittery yet intense roller coaster ride through self acceptance, the project explores themes of passion, joy, and confusion, and will be released on June 7.

World’s First Cinema will be expanding their cinematic tapestry this year with their upcoming deluxe EP Palm Reader (Silver Screen Edition), out April 12 via Fearless Records. Following the release of 2023’s Palm Reader – which featured singles “Holy Water,” “SOS,” and “Palm Reader” – the deluxe EP offers five new spellbinding tracks. Palm Reader (Silver Screen Edition) includes a new version of “Holy Water” that was recorded at The Los Angeles Theatre, making the perfect companion piece to the original single’s music video recorded at the same location.

Palm Reader (Silver Screen Edition) is available to pre-save now at https://found.ee/silverscreen

“We are so excited to release the Deluxe Edition of our Palm Reader EP as it’s been our opportunity to showcase another side to what World’s First Cinema does. We’ve always been really focused on the idea of WFC being cinematic which is what lead us to producing the ’Silver Screen Interludes’,” shares the band on the new EP. “The ‘Silver Screen interludes’ are short orchestral instrumental pieces that borrow and play with the melodies of the actual songs they precede on the record. The goal being to create a truly cinematic moment and reinforce the world we are trying to build around the band. We imagine them as the film trailer versions of our songs.”

They originated as exclusive productions for our live show to make our set more memorable and prove that we are more than just an alt rock band. Now it’s time to share them in actual releases so people know what the future might bring. We plan on taking World’s First Cinema into the world of actual movie scoring as we grow. This is our first step at setting that stage.”

musician and writer Scott Guild shares the haunting track “Only Killers,” a collaboration with Cindertalk & Stranger Cat out now. The song is the latest release from his forthcoming PlasticThe Album, due May 31. The LP is the musical component of his ambitious book-and-album project, which includes his acclaimed debut novel, Plasticout now via Penguin Random House.

Plastic is set in a future world of plastic figurines, and “Only Killers,” out today along with a lyric video, illuminates a dark episode in the story. Erin, the main character, is caught in an eco-terror attack at her workplace, and her song decries both the terrorists’ violence and the deadly climate crisis that fuels their rage. The singer Stranger Cat (a frequent collaborator of Sharon Van Etten and Sufjan Stevens) brings Erin to life on the track, capturing her pain and confusion while the propulsive bass and distorted horns mirror her fraught emotions, underscored by unique, staccato percussion.

Guild feels a deep personal connection to this track, and adds, ‘Only Killers’ might be my most personal song on the album, even though it’s sung from Erin’s perspective. It captures so much of my anxiety in this moment, the fear that every sane person feels for our planet’s future. We try to distract ourselves, but that undercurrent of dread is always there.”

Plastic: The Album tells the story of the novel through a cycle of dynamic baroque-pop songs. Stranger Cat stars on the record, singing in the voice of Erin, embodying her struggles. While many of the tracks use lyrics from the musical numbers in the book (where the figurines break into song), the tracks also branch off in their own directions, expanding the plastic universe of the story. All my life, I’ve been obsessed with art that pushes boundaries,” Guild says of telling a story through music and prose, especially boundaries of genre and format. Kate Bush with her high-concept videos, Anohni’s work with Marina Abramovic—I love art that creates an immersive world, that lets me lose myself in someone’s vision. That’s my hope with Plastic: to find new ways to tell a story, to put people in a vivid space of imagination. It might sound silly, but I’ve grown very close to Erin through the years. I’m excited for everyone to meet her.

Daughter Of A Drum, the creative alias of multi-talented artist Aoife McAtamney, from Co. Kildare, is set to release her debut single “Heal Me” on April 12th. With a unique blend of haunting vocals, evocative lyrics, and mesmerizing contemporary sounds, “Heal Me” promises to captivate listeners and take them on a transformative musical journey.

Renowned for her groundbreaking contributions to dance, Aoife McAtamney debuts on the music scene with an electrifying single, marking a monumental shift in her career. From remixing classics to original compositions, Aoife’s innovative spirit promises an immersive musical experience.

“Heal Me” is a deeply personal and introspective exploration of pain, healing, and self-discovery. Set against a backdrop of field recordings from Newgrange and late-night New York City, “Heal Me” weaves a tapestry of contrasts, juxtaposing moments of anguish with glimpses of peace and redemption. Drawing inspiration from experiences both intimate and universal, the song delves into the complexities of human emotion with raw honesty and vulnerability.

About her debut Aoife says… “The song travels and is a composition of contrasts holding both pain and peace. The song starts with an organ acting as a prayer and bubbly synth representing the alchemy of giving into yourself. Trumpets and brass usher in a new day and dream that is your own. Fuzz guitar gives you that sexy rock and roll power, a sultry charisma that comes from your middle and a martini glass. The chorus are your angels cheering you on as you decide to mend your life. The tempo of the song is the tempo of your healing tears. If suffering has a remedy or balm – this song would be it.”

Produced and mixed by Alex Borwick, “Heal Me” features the talents of Graham Hopkins on drums, Caoimhe Hopkinson on bass guitar, Brass by Kevin Foran and Tom Caraher and a pub choir from Celbridge, Co Kildare. With dramaturgy by Renee Yoxon, the song is a testament to the collaborative spirit and creative synergy that defines Daughter Of A Drum’s artistic vision.

“Heal Me” is more than just a song; it’s a remedy for the soul, a balm for the wounded heart. As Daughter Of A Drum invites listeners to embark on this transformative musical journey, they are reminded that even in the depths of despair, there is always hope for healing and redemption.

Daughter Of A Drum’s debut single “Heal Me” will be available on all major streaming platforms on April 12th, 2024. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this captivating musical odyssey firsthand.

From NYC to Richmond to the deep Oregon forests, Ghost Piss’s sound has changed right alongside songwriter River Allen. Polishing their DIY sound and expounding upon new scenes, new feels and a new world, Dream Girl is an encapsulating nod to the growing pains River experienced throughout their 20s. Ghost Piss is now celebrating the release of their first full length album titled “Dream Girl” and the release of their third music video, “Rude Dudes.”

Since River’s mother found a piano on the side of the road when they were three, the self-taught artist has been through many chapters of musicianship and life, developing a unique sound that allowed River to book over 100 shows across the country before releasing their debut EP ‘Blushing’ on Brooklyn label Styles Upon Styles in 2021. Ghost Piss’s versatile sound allowed for them to play alongside an eclectic array of musicians such as The Space Lady, Barrie, Sporting Life, and Fuck U Pay Us.

River’s time spent performing and tending bar at NYC dance venues (as well as tending the garden at The Lot Radio), and tending to the Oregon forest while working as a botanist for the National Park service were equally important in crafting their tongue-and-cheek, and effortlessly personal Electro Pop sound. Ghost Piss combines River’s love of mainstream pop hooks, heavy house beats, and the succinct and minimalist compositions of their favorite composer Erik Satie- using repetition as a means of progression and meditation. River’s proficient mastery of the MC-505 can be heard on Dream Girl, accomplishing the goal of taking one piece of gear to its absolute limit.

DREAMCAR, the new wave supergroup consisting of No Doubt’s Tony Kanal [bass], Tom Dumont [guitar], and Adrian Young [drums] and singer Davey Havok [AFI, Blakq Audio, Ramones X], have announced the forthcoming release of the Dream EP, out this Friday, April 5 2024. Fans can pre-save the EP ahead of its release here: https://onerpm.link/dream-ep

Rife with shimmering guitar tones, funky slap bass, bombastic drums, and a neon-lit dance floor dreaminess, DREAMCAR nods to the decade of Tears for Fears and The Lost Boys through a kaleidoscope of inspiration forged over three decades creating and connecting with fans worldwide.

The ‘Dream EP’ is the first taste of new music since the bands self titled debut album, released in 2017. It includes three new recordings; two tracks that were considered for the band’s previous album and a cover of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream”. The two new songs were just recently finalized just for this EP.

As a singer, songwriter and producer, MyCompiledThoughts describes his sound more like a cinematographer, “It’s R&B but the colors are usually way more pop as well as the instrumentation and arrangements. Yet at the root it is my variation of R&B.” Musically he falls on the map where Frank Ocean and Childish Gambino are neighbors, an unpredictable and sonically rich landscape. On MyCompiledThoughts’ new EP ‘Soul Brother’ (out March 29th), we see a different side of this “modern-day philosopher” (Notion.online). The emotional vulnerability of Thoughts’ past songs have begun to fade as we find him traveling back in time to a realm where it feels like it’s forever the 1970s. Sonically there is a retro ambiance paired with modern R&B while the synthetic steel drums throughout are a nod to the vibrant cultural tapestry
of his Haitian heritage. Lyrically, ‘Soul Brother’ is a hedonistic odyssey. It begins with “Bite Me”, “A love story about wanting to feel a love so beautiful it can hurt,” he explains. On “Bad Mother Lover”, Thoughts “becomes a Caribbean soul brother immaculate in stature.” The journey comes to a climax with the single “Pimping” followed by blissful and pure love. ‘Soul Brother’ concludes with “Morning,” a reflection of the aftermath of an eros.

Southtowne Lanes has today released their brand new single and music video “Go Cold” – fans can watch now, here. The band’s first new music since 2016, “Go Cold” is a visceral song about loss and grief. The song is taken from Southtowne Lanes’ forthcoming album Take Care, which will be out in full on May 10th2024 via Dog Knights Productions.

The main event. The moment of death, the moment the light goes out,” recalls lead singer/guitarist Matt Kupka. The stains of human decomposition on the walls clashing with childhood pictures and memories, and the long walk down the hallway in which I witnessed what real actual death can look like. ‘Go Cold’ was the second working title for the album, but we deemed it too dark and not reflective of the hopeful sentiments found in the record.

Fans can look forward to more new music in the weeks to come. Stay tuned for more information at www.instagram.com/southtownelanes.

Serbian-born, New York City-based multidisciplinary artist X-Coast releases his newest single, “Marathon Man.” The track, a nostalgic early ‘00s upbeat rave tool utilized by the likes of Daria Kolosova, SHYGIRL, Young Marco,  and Mall Grab, is out now via Higher Ground.

While writing “Marathon Man,” I was inspired by a mix my friend recorded in 2003 at Paradiso Club in Novi Sad, Serbia. He was mixing this beautiful melody in with a very percussion-driven tribal techno (basically what we call hardgroove today), and it struck me. I needed to write a track like this. The chords with added pitch bend are on the edge of being off-key, and that’s where the magic is. the overall result is an optimistic feeling as if we were preparing for a big sports competition, like the Olympics.. hence the name.”    — X-Coast

X-Coast, a project by Bojan Cizmic, serves as a personified embodiment of ‘90s European rave culture. X-Coast is as much of a concept as it is a musical project. From his self-directed videos, after-after parties at a Serbian flea market, 3-D internet art aesthetic, hilarious online persona, and timeless, genre-weaving releases, there are few artists who can match Cizmic’s devotion to the narrative of his project.

An enigmatic force of the underground music scene, Jazmin Bean mesmerizes fans with the music video release of “Shit Show,” out today on their official YouTube channel HERE. Self-directed alongside visionary filmmaker Zak Watson, “Shit Show” brings viewers on a cinematic journey into the surreal world of Jazmin Bean, combining dazzling cityscapes, muted 90s aesthetics, and hauntingly beautiful melodies.

“I always envisioned myself falling in the video since I began to make the song, since it’s about a truly unpleasant human and relationship I wanted to just be as far away from as possible when it was over. I think the falling is a good representation of that,” says Jazmin on the visual direction of the new music video. I wanted to land on my feet, as a sort of thing, like, you can’t keep me down no matter how low you take me. I also loved the Placebo video where he walks down the building. I wanted to have a twist like that.”

“Shit Show” is one of the standout tracks from Jazmin Bean’s debut album, Traumatic Livelihood, which arrived in February via Interscope / Island.

Grunge rock band, The Suicide Disease have announced their latest single, “Descent” out April 12 via Zodhiac Records. Following the success of their previous singles, “Flood” and “War”  which debuted last year, “Descent” delivers another powerful statement from the band.

Presave “Descent” Here

With its raw energy and emotive lyrics, the anthem of resilience and perseverance speaks to life’s struggles and the importance of pushing forward in the face of adversity.

“Descent” is a cathartic reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of light to hold on to. The Suicide Disease continue to be a beacon of hope for those navigating through their own personal battles, accompanied by gritty instrumentation and haunting melodies showcasing their signature sound.

“Descent is the dark path we take when we are constantly thinking about the macabre.  Wanting someone back from the dead and not moving forward with your life because of it. It’s as bad as trying to dig up a body, you’re just digging up the past. And the message here is that death is final – so loved ones would tell you to live on.” – Jay Francis, lead vocals

Knowing first hand the affects of their namesake, the chronic pain disorder disease Trigeminal Neuralgia, The Suicide Disease make melodic metal music that offers solace to people dealing with loss. Having grown up in a lonely beach town, the depression of the south shore has seeped into the band’s sound, granting them the ability to address pain in a way that leaves listeners feeling less alone.

To help curate some commotion and provide a welcome distraction from the world, today, The Noise introduces their new video series titled Something Loud with their first episode featuring alt-pop band flor — Watch

Filmed in the heart of Los Angeles – with the help from Betawave Media – The Noise’s new video series is bringing the, well, noise by highlighting a host of different artists from all over the musical spectrum and allowing them to showcase what “loud” means to them.

Today’s debut episode features Oregon indie band flor. Fresh off their recent run supporting scene staples The Maine, the talented trio stepped into Studio Eleven43 and cooked up a piping hot set of their infectious, vibe-heavy singles “Every Night,” “Warm Blood Pt 2,” “No More Time,” and “Gotta Do Something.”

Also taking some time to elaborate on their musical influences, as well as life out on the road, flor gives viewers a brief peak behind the curtain on how the band has been able to flourish since their 2014 inception.

As her version of Charley Pride’s hit, “Roll On Mississippi,” (released on Pride’s birthday, March 18) climbs the Americana charts, Danielia Cotton announces the tribute record, Charley’s Pride. With the lead single currently sitting in the top 100 on the Americana chart, the Americana/soul/rock artist is preparing to release the EP in honor of not just country music’s first Black superstar and icon, but also her own heritage by way of her grandparents.

“My grandfather, or ‘Pop-pop’ as I called him, was an extraordinary man and an incredibly memorable male figure in my life, having never met my father,” Cotton says. “He was a quiet, humble, closeted country music fan. Being the type not to hide things about himself, I found it quite interesting that he liked Charley Pride and kept it on the down low.”

“The number of Black artists that are having a serious presence in country music would make Charley Pride and my Pop-pop smile,” she continues, noting that while Black artists have begun to dominate more in country music, she was surprised that there weren’t more tributes and covers of Pride, given that he was the first Black American voted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the first Black singer to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, and is second in all-time sales on RCA (just behind Elvis Presley).

indie rock icons GROUPLOVE announce that their latest album, I Want It All Right Nowwill be expanded into a deluxe version on May 10. The deluxe album will feature six new tracks, including today’s live version of the album’s title track “All” from Madison Square Garden. With Jake Clemons from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band lending his talents on the saxophone, the live rendition sheds any previous confines and swells into something altogether larger than life — Stream.

Speaking to FLOOD Magazine last year, the band’s Christian Zucconi said, “We knew immediately that [‘All’] was going to be the first song on the record and ultimately the title track. This song speaks to what we were trying to understand about ourselves while making this album. It’s our way of asking, ‘Why do we always want something more than what we have?’”

Multifaceted in her approach to artistry, Hannah Hooper has painted all of the band’s artwork. GROUPLOVE’s artwork has become almost as recognizable as their sound over the years, seeing the band work out the tensions of life through all mediums at their disposal.

Denver based duo Elektric Animals – comprised of Nick Sanders and Will Hubert – have today shared their earnest new single “Ready To Go”, taken from their forthcoming EP A Bear And The Bull. The song showcases the collaborative spirit of Elektric Animals, with additional guitars by Lincoln Parish (formerly Cage The Elephant) and vocals by Chandra Desantis. The song was recorded in Denver with producer Eric Everhart, mixed in Virginia by Will Beasley (The Dangerous Summer, Turnstile), and mastered by Paul Leavitt (The Used, Yellowcard, All Time Low). Listen to “Ready To Go” now, here: https://ffm.to/ready_to_go.

’Ready To Go’ started as a stream of consciousness,” the band shares. “Stepping back it feels as though there is this confusion and limbo going on. A sense of regret but also accepting and looking forward.

They continue: “It started by wanting to make a straight forward indie rock song with dueling guitar lines that have this conversation back and forth. A real pedal to the metal attitude, even though we aren’t heavy, the tempo and rhythm are quite literally driving. That’s why we chose the various car noises to be placed throughout the song aptly naming the tune ‘Ready To Go’

iNTeRNeT FReNDz have announced their debut EP iT’S a SeCReT due for release on June 26. Produced by Matt Squire (Underoath, Panic! At The Disco, Sum 41), the new EP welcomes iNTeRNeT FReNDz to the scene with a bang with four anthemic pop punk tracks – including previously-released single “Warning Signs” – featuring soaring vocals courtesy of Michael Swank and earworm guitar riffs from Rossy Burr.

California DIY duo The Palms release their opus to the state that raised them with their new album Wonderland. Their first full-length record since 2020, Johnny Zambetti and Ben Rothbard have done a lot of creative healing and found their way back to their roots. Self-produced, Wonderland is the soundtrack for a top-down drive anywhere from Laurel Canyon to the Sunset Strip, an osmotic experience of surroundings and the band’s ever present motif of redemption based on their personal David vs Goliath journey — Stream.

“As a whole, ‘Wonderland’ is a portal into our own existence and our attempt at making sense of the wild world around us over the last three years,” shares the band. “If each song acts as a story filled with questions and lessons, ‘Phases,’ the final track on ‘Wonderland’, is a subtle resolution to the eleven songs preceding it and a reminder that this journey is but a series of chapters and episodes. As brutal and defeating as life can appear, ‘this too shall pass’ and it is up to us to find beauty and meaning in the lesson.”
