INsiders Guide: Letters Sent Home, MIKE WATT and PAPA M, Zoë Fromer, HERDD, Elektric Animals, River Nelson…

Across three well-received EPs of “sad, hard music”, German quartet Letters Sent Home have made their name as a band who match infectious melody and huge choruses, with the lyrical depth and heart of people with a lot to say.

Formed while at school in Germany’s northern countryside in 2015, and becoming a serious project a couple of years later following singer Emily Paschke and bassist Lara Ripke’s time studying in North America, Letters Sent Home’s music – an energized mix of pop-punk, alt rock, and emo – has served as a vessel for Emily’s inner turbulence.

“The whole purpose of our music is that I’m talking about my personal trauma, and how you never actually fully heal from stuff that happens to you, but learn to live with it,” says Emily. “You may bear scars, but those scars are never going to fade fully. There’s always something you can work on. I feel like you never you’re never fully, completely satisfied or happy.”

All of this is set to music that’s as electrified and youthful as Emily’s lyrics are deep. Having primed themselves with their previous work and spending two years perfecting their craft with long-time producer and friend Julian ‘Polar’ Huisel, Letters Sent Home – completed by guitarist Robin Werner and drummer Louis Schramm – is embracing this opportunity and shooting their shot.

This is the new exciting split 7″ collaboration from Mike Watt and Papa M (David Pajo). This is the second 7” in the Mike Watt “one-for-one” series, where Mike invites a long-time friend to cover one of his songs, and vice-versa. The first one in the series featured Mike Watt covering Big Boys classic “We Got Soul”, and Time Kerr (Big Boys) covering “History Lesson – Part II.”

The single has dropped now.

Raised in Boca Raton, Florida, Zoë Fromer is a dynamic singer-songwriter who now calls the kinetic metropolis of New York City her home. Growing up on her mother’s CD collection, she drew inspiration from the likes of Blondie and Queen, before discovering her own haven in groups like The Kills, the White Stripes, and Queens of the Stone Age.

Like many greats, in pursuit of a musical landscape that could provide more space for her, Fromer picked up and headed to New York. Immersing herself in the city’s music scene, Fromer honed her craft. The result is a toothsome, emotional iteration of soulful indie rock.

An ode to generalized anxiety, “Paranoia” serves as a relatable mantra to many. Written from a freshly diagnosed perspective, HERDD‘s scattered and glitchy vocals add to the overall frenetic energy of the track. Celebrating abstinence from drinking and substances, HERDD creates a triumphant and reflective electro-pop tune with healing powers. Paired with a colorful video showcasing HERDD’s unique vibe as an artist, the new track is a must listen for fans of four-on-the-floor electronic realness.

Elektric Animals and their forthcoming EP, A Bear And The Bull., out on April 19th via Open Your Ears Records! Drawing inspiration from the timeless allure of 90s chart-toppers and the pulsating energy of the early 80s new wave movement, Elektric Animals crafts a musical time capsule, bridging the gap between cherished musical eras while incorporating modern sensibilities.

A Bear And The Bull. was written in between their home studios in Denver and produced by Eric Everhart. It also features guitars by Lincoln Parish (formerly Cage The Elephant) and vocals by Chandra Desantis. Mixing was done in Virginia by Will Beasley (The Dangerous Summer, Turnstile), and the EP was mastered by Paul Leavitt (The Used, Yellowcard, All Time Low). You can check out lead single “Dreaming/Wishing”

The Mindfulness Remix is the current single by River Nelson and AltoBeats, which builds on the original Mindfulness, from their latest album We Should Escape. For the remix, the duo tapped ultra-respected New York City rapper Koncept. Both artists delve deeper into the topic of mindfulness, a common and much-used meditation practice.

“There was such a huge response to the original Mindfulness, Alto and I decided to add on to it,” says River. “We’re also crazy excited to bring Koncept on for the ride this time. With the remix, we not only want to reintroduce the original song to people, but open up the topic of mindfulness and mental health again. Plus, the track that Alto produced is so dope, I had to write over it one more time.

Lyrically, River and Koncept explain how they achieve mindfulness in their day-to-day life, and they do it with high-quality lyricism.

“When I was just a kiddy, my love was strictly for the city / Now it’s nature, the ocean’s my bride, I’m her man, I’m on the sand / It’s like she’s coming down the aisle when she rolls to where I am / I’m with the seagulls feeling peaceful again,” spits River.

Sparkle Shoelaces,” the first single from the Deluxe Edition of Jessie Baylin’s Strawberry Windis out today!

A song of inspiration and hope, “Sparkle Shoelaces explores how one small change – a change as tiny as adding sparkly shoelaces to a pair of old shoes – can improve your mindset and your view of yourself. As Baylin aptly explains, “It’s like that old Jerome Kern-Dorothy Fields song: ‘pick myself up, dust myself off, start all over again.’”

Pre-order the Deluxe Edition of Strawberry Wind and stream or purchase “Sparkle Shoelaces” HERE.

Strawberry Wind, due out May 31, 2024, is an album that delivers on a promise Baylin made with herself: to create an honest album for kids and parents alike.

With four new tracks added (three on the vinyl edition), Strawberry Wind delightfully expresses a childlike sensibility woven through lyrical themes of dream life, supermoons, and summertime vibes, along with some gentle doses of reality. Baylin’s trademark dream-pop vocals shine through, her inherent musicality is present, and her ’70s Laurel Canyon/Brill Building writing prowess is front-and-center. Baylin says, “I wanted this album to feel magical and remind people of the child inside of all of us that is filled with a sense of wonder, pure joy, and hope.”

“What makes Strawberry Wind different is that it approaches children’s music in a way that trusts kids to be more mature than we give them credit for, and lets adults be more whimsical than usually permitted.” – Rolling Stone

Post hardcore band SeeYouSpaceCowboy have pulled back the curtains on another single from their highly anticipated new album Coup De Grâce. “Red Wine And Discontent” boasts a masterful balance of frantic melodies and guttural screams. Fans can stream the track now here.

Shares frontwoman Connie Sgarossa: This is a song that deals with what it means to be the dirty little secret in an affair and trying to come to terms with that notion while also being critical and wishing to be more. It’s a song that really pushes through in a frantic but melodic way to me.

Coup De Grâce is a complex and imaginative record that invites listeners into a neo-noir world of the band’s creation. It’s set to be released on April 19th via Pure Noise Records and features previous singles “To The Dance Floor For Shelter (ft. Courtney LaPlante)”, Respite For A Tragic Tale (ft. iRis.EXE)”, “Silhouettes in Motion”, “Rhythm and Rapture (ft. nothing, nowhere.)”, and “Chewing The Scenery”. Some buildings are more than just bricks and mortar, they carry their history with them and their ghosts within them. One such building is the Old Granada Studios in Manchester, an iconic studio complex, right in the heart of Manchester, and during the heyday of regional TV broadcasting (70s-90s) home to the legendary Granada Television and it’s most famous export the soap opera Coronation Street.

‘From the North’ was Granada Television’s original strapline, an institution that prided itself on a strong northern identity. This is where Manchester music champion Tony Wilson handed live TV debuts to many local bands, perhaps most famously Joy Division back in 1978. The old Granada TV building and its iconic sign was a prominent part of the Manchester skyline until it closed in 2013. Following the closure, the studios became a temporary home to Low Four Studios, whilst both Mr Scruff and 808 State took up residence in the building, the latter in the old Granada transmission suite.

GoGo Penguin – From The North both celebrates that heritage and captures the Manchester-based trio at an exciting moment within their trajectory. The opportunity came out of the blue when the band were invited back to do a live session in summer 2023. Now operating as Versa Studio 4, the band felt that the studio had played a significant part of their own musical history – they had already filmed a performance in front of a live audience in 2016 and recorded their 2018 album A Humdrum Star there – and wanted to document both the space and also the fast-developing relationship with newest member, drummer Jon Scott. The decision was taken to get the cameras up close so fans can both see and hear the band at work.

“Mountain Song” by Mia Day, which is out now.

STEFA* announces their long-awaited debut album, Born With An Extra Rib, set to release on June 28 with Figure & Ground, and presents the lead single “3COSAS!” Written over the course of nine years, the album explores all the different versions of stefa marin alarcón, the self-proclaimed “genderless” and “genreless” vocalist, composer, educator, and multimedia performance artist. At the heart of the album, STEFA* poses a central question: “What myths do we inherit that keep us away from ourselves?”Born and raised in Queens to Colombian immigrants, STEFA* takes on this question through their unique amalgamation of punk, classical maximalism, and experimental pop, to reconsider their own origin stories “because so many of those were lost along the way of colonization,” STEFA* explains. “Born With An Extra Ribis me creating a story of myself and of my own becoming.”

Following their debut EP Sepalina, which earned notable acclaim from outlets including Remezcla, Them, Latino USA, and NPR, STEFA*’s forthcoming debut album Born With An Extra Rib expands in scale and scope, releasing alongside a ritual performance film that they created as Artist-In-Residence at NYC’s oldest experimental art institution, The Kitchen. After its sold-out premiere,”Born With An Extra Rib: The Film” went on to win the Queer|Art|Prize for Recent Work and a Jury Award at TRANSlations Seattle Film Festival. In the process of crafting the ambitious multimedia project, the film and the album mutually shaped one another. “The questions that I was asking myself were coming from a place of rage and I wanted it to feel that way,” describes stefa. “I wanted it to feel very grand and was thinking about scale. I was thinking about my songs as a film and what it would look like on screen, and that then went back to what it was going to sound like. I was thinking about the voice and taking up space and also using my voice in a different way, thinking about opera and these bigger vocal pieces.”

French multifaceted artist Folamour releases his new song “Ya Just Need 2 Believe in Yaself (A Decade Together Mix),” which commemorates a decade of music thus far in his career. The release precedes his debut at Coachella, where he’ll perform at the heralded Yuma Tent.

Over the course of a decade, Folamour has performed at bucket-list venues across the world, such as the Olympia in Paris, the Geneva Cathedral for Cercle, the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Printworks and Hackney Church in London, and many more, including festivals like Glastonbury, Tomorrowland, and Sónar. Folamour’s ability to connect with his audiences on each of his dates makes him a simple, accessible artist who succeeds in creating a unique atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.

In 2023, he released his third studio album, Manifesto, his most accomplished but also most personal project. This opus features a wide range of prestigious artists such as Amadou & Mariam on the track “Vorage,” as well as Baccus, Jungle By Night, Khazali, Emmanuel Jal and Tim Ayre. Folamour proved again his ability to diversify as a producer on the project while retaining the electronic and club aspects that make him a fully-fledged artist at every level of production, composition, and writing.

Fusing R&B, Neo-Soul and her Mauritian roots, Australian R&B vocalist Anieszka unfolds her latest offering ‘Sentiment’, Anieszka joins forces with Konny Kon (one half of Manchester’s soul pioneers Children Of Zeus). Perfectly juxtaposed, Anieszka’s uplifting performance, full of haunting melodies, paves the way for Konny’s gruff vocals over a sensual , smooth and indelible instrumental (produced by Finbar). Collectively, the track elegantly paints a picture of vulnerability, love and lust.

On the track, Anieszka explains: ‘Sentiment pulls apart the walls between two people who are irrevocably drawn to each other. I wrote this song about the feeling of wanting to fall deeper into a connection, and asking if the other person is ready to meet me there. We all want to feel loved, desired and valued, and I felt called to capture the intimacy and fragility of a connection, in both its glory and doubt. I want to remind listeners that it’s okay to be fearful of giving your all to someone, but that the important part is to express your fears and feelings whilst asking for reassurance and safety. It’s love-making music, and I hope its depth and emotion will strengthen connections .”

Now and Then’ is the new single by Bristol-based singer-songwriter / bassist Stevie Toddle.

The track is a playful reflection on the people that enter our lives and leave something with us. Much like the song’s concept, the tune’s instrumentation sees a meandering and meeting of orchestral and synthesised melodies, with their interaction culminating in an explosive unison. Stevie Toddler explains: “Now and Then is about the people that enter your life and have an irreversible effect. The effect needn’t be big, but we’re all collecting from one another, and sometimes parts of someone will stay with us permanently.”

Taking inspiration from the likes ofSt Vincent, Feist, Dirty Projectors, Nai Palm, Unknown Mortal Orchestra & Connan Mockasin, the song is lifted from upcoming album ‘Last Time Forever’: an enchanting piece rich in textures and dynamics. Having learnt classical double bass from age seven, and playing in orchestras as a child, it was in her teens that Stevie seriously felt music as a calling – when she picked up a bass guitar and got into Radiohead and Pixies. Hearing Esperanza Spalding’s ‘Chamber Music Society’ made her realise “Oh – that’s actually possible for a bassist!” and the seeds of her solo project began to take root.

Super American has announced their third full length album, Gangster of Love, to be released May 31 via Wax Bodega. They’ve also released the first single and music video for “Hopefully Pitchfork Doesn’t Hear This”, a tongue in cheek track that rides palm-muted guitar chunks into a soaring, anxiety-fueled chorus.

Produced by Sam Guaiana (Neck Deep, Bayside), Gangster of Love follows 2021’s SUP and 2018’s Tequila Sunrise and found the duo fleeing Buffalo for Los Angeles, where the push and pull between the two songwriters – the real magic at the heart of Super American – was allowed to flourish and grow in a brand-new environment.

Since forming in Western New York in 2016, Patrick Feeley and his musical partner Matt Cox have blurred the line between absurdism and existentialism, swirling ‘90s melodicism, new-millennium pop-punk energy, and heartfelt emo into a wry, smirking rock sound.

Super American feels like the equivalent of their hometown Buffalo Bills’ tailgate scene: gleefully rowdy and best enjoyed with a beer in hand (with the non-zero chance someone might end up leaping through a flaming table when all is said and done).

SUP was basically a record filled with anxiety as a survival mechanism,” Feeley explains. “This time around, it was less of a victim mindset. Thematically, I feel like it’s more about yearnings and desires and what you want for yourself.”

“We wanted this album to feel like you were stepping into this little world, and working with Sam helped us accomplish that,” says Cox.

global house wonder Chloé Caillet releases her massive new remix for Flight Facilities, who have enlisted her to take on their newest single, “Trouble,” featuring longtime friend and collaborator Owl Eyes.

If the original mix of “Trouble” harnessed the sunshine-soaked beaches of Ibiza, where Flight Facilities wrote the track in 2023, Chloé Caillet’s remix is a plunge into the peak hours of the island’s storied nightlife. Still serving as an ode to the golden era of Sydney club culture in the late ‘00s, Caillet does what she does best here, flipping the track into a proper rave tool.

Chloé is an incredible producer, and it just took one night in Miami to know we could trust her to give Trouble that… je ne sais quoi 🤌”     — Flight Facilities

World’s First Cinema have welcomed audiences back into their cinematic universe with their new deluxe EP Palm Reader (Silver Screen Edition), out now via Fearless Records. Following the release of 2023’s Palm Reader – which featured singles “Holy Water,” “SOS,” and “Palm Reader” – the deluxe EP expands the band’s cinematic tapestry with five new spellbinding interludes. “They originated as exclusive productions for our live show to make our set more memorable and prove that we are more than just an alt rock band,” shares the band. “Now it’s time to share them in actual releases so people know what the future might bring. We plan on taking World’s First Cinema into the world of actual movie scoring as we grow. This is our first step at setting that stage.”

Palm Reader (Silver Screen Edition) includes a new version of “Holy Water” that was recorded at The Los Angeles Theatre, making the perfect companion piece to the original single’s music video recorded at the same location.

Palm Reader (Silver Screen Edition) is available to stream now at https://found.ee/silverscreen

The band continues, “We are so excited to release the Deluxe Edition of our Palm Reader EP as it’s been our opportunity to showcase another side to what World’s First Cinema does. We’ve always been really focused on the idea of WFC being cinematic which is what lead us to producing the ’Silver Screen Interludes’. The ‘Silver Screen interludes’ are short orchestral instrumental pieces that borrow and play with the melodies of the actual songs they precede on the record. The goal being to create a truly cinematic moment and reinforce the world we are trying to build around the band. We imagine them as the film trailer versions of our songs.”

Holland Andrews (they/them) is a vocalist, composer, producer, and performer whose work focuses on the abstraction of operatic and extended-technique voice to build cathartic and dissonant soundscapes.

Today they announce the upcoming release of the Answers EP, out May 10th on Nils Frahm’s LEITER imprint. This is the fourth and final release in a series of EPs Andrews began releasing in 2021, including WordlessForgettings, and Doubtless. In addition to the digital release of the Answers, LEITER will be offering up a limited edition vinyl containing all new tracks plus the previously released Doubtless EP, which features a collaboration with Nils Frahm on the track “Rules.”

Today Andrews shares the title track “Answers,” a cinematic soundscape that shifts from its ambient origins to a cathartic mix of electronics, voice, and elated energy. Their composition style weaves together a sprawling emotional tapestry to command space for both discord and intimacy.

New York metal band Brotality have released their newest single “Black Abandon”. The new single shows the band at their best, mixing classic thrash metal together with modern melodies, progressive grooves, and bouncing riffs, culminating in a refreshingly energetic and compelling track that is sure to leave listeners coming back for more. “Black Abandon” places listeners into a nightmare of the underground: an elusive beast dwells beneath the floors, stalking its prey in the shadows. It’s this terrifying unknown that the song feeds on, gnawing on the ears of the listener until the very ending, when the song’s passions crescendo into a fist of methodical ferocity.

Zach Adam has released “End of the World (Late At Night),” a piano pop ballad version of his recent single “End of the World.” The piece showcases Adam’s versatility and ability to be vulnerable. You can stream and download “End of the World (Late At Night)” on all platforms now.

The single highlights Adam’s dynamic and smooth vocals with just a piano instrumental as accompaniment, making it feel like you’re right there in the room with him. The soft, simple piano melody reels you in to pay attention to the lyrics, “How can you plan forever, Everything’s now or never, Gotta save ourselves tonight, You and I at the end of the world, Sitting by the ashes of the things we never learned…Hold my hand cause things will never be the way they were, You and I.” The track evokes visuals of a dark, empty theater with just a piano on stage, which is exactly what you’ll see in the music video directed by Cameron Veitch, out April 17th. The forthcoming video is the second part of a continuing story first told in the original version of “End of the World.” The upcoming videos serve as another element in Adam’s storytelling abilities as an artist and will showcase the same story as it keeps evolving and takes fans on an unexpected journey.

Singer-Songwriter Chloe Stroll released an impassioned new single “Extremes.” Written alongside Kevin Bard (Dan + Shay, We The Kings, Parmalee), the song explores the powerful emotions of love, passion, and deep affection. Listen to the track HERE and check out the official music video HERE.

“‘Extremes’ truly embodies the strong, ever-present emotions we can feel with love,” Stroll said. “We all know the saying ‘there’s a fine line between love and hate,’ and that is very much the basis for the lyrics and the idea behind this song.”

The music video brings the intensity of the emotions to life as Stroll passionately delivers the lyrics singing the melodic chorus: “Why do we / Only love / In extremes / Cuz it seems like we / Feel way too deep.”

’With the past as our witness…’ After this declaration, the lyrics describe the ways in which I tried to shine a light for my deteriorating father,” shares singer/guitarist Matt Kupka. “It establishes a prominent theme in the album: the light flickering, flickering, and eventually going out. The witnessing of the downfall.

Marrying textured layers of sound and rhythm, this track crafts a harmonious blend that stylistically leans towards hip-hop while incorporating electronic influences. This track packs a punch, with Dreamdoll and Jay1 exhibiting seamless synergy, going back and forth like a lyrical relay. Their gritty instrumentals and evocative melodies showcasing their signature sound make The Suicide Disease the go-to group to turn to in times of adversity.

“Descent is the dark path we take when we are constantly thinking about the macabre. Wanting someone back from the dead and not moving forward with your life because of it. It’s as bad as trying to dig up a body, you’re just digging up the past. And the message here is that death is final – so loved ones would tell you to live on.” – Jay Francis, lead vocals

Partnered perfectly with frontwoman Anna Friedberg’s silky vocals and signature cowbell chimes, the essence of the track is non comparable to anything other than Friedberg.

Anna, of Friedberg, says “It was the first song I wrote with Dan Carey: It started with a jam at his studio in South London – with just 2 guitars and a cowbell. Well… and a few cowbell hits later the song was there in its whole glory. I had such a good time making this track with Dan. I kind of already felt from the very first second I met him and entered his studio that this was gonna be amazing. The track is about non-commitment, I am experiencing more and more in all aspects of modern society.”
