Maisy welcome to OLC! So for everyone out there can you tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to want to be a singer songwriter?
Thank you for having me! I’m Maisy Kay — I’m a singer-songwriter from a small town in the countryside in England. I moved to LA when I was 14 to pursue music, and I’ve wanted to be a singer as long as I can remember! I started writing my own songs around 10 and that really solidified my desire to be an artist.
How were you discovered?
After I wrote a musical for my primary school, I got put in the local paper. A recording studio in Birmingham saw it and had asked if I wanted to come in and record my songs, so I did. After a couple years of doing that, I got a record deal offer in LA, with the condition that I would have to move to America to pursue it!
Can you tell us about your experience touring with JVKE and how it has influenced your music?
The JVKE tour was one of the best moments of my life. It was such an incredible experience, and I think back to it often. I started writing my best material once that tour had finished. I think getting that experience to be a performer on stage, and to see how songs translate live, helped me improve as a writer and keep those things in the back of my mind as I work.
What inspired your latest single “In Your Car,” and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?
I had the initial idea for “In Your Car” because I loved how my partner always opened the door for me. It was early in the relationship, and everything felt fun and magical. I had hopes that as the relationship deepened, I’d still have that door opened for me. I wrote it right after I finished the JVKE tour. The chorus came to me pretty instantly, and I wrote the entire song in about an hour! I hope listeners understand the underlying anxiety and hope for those things to stay sweet, whilst also simply feeling that thrill and excitement of a new love.
Your music often blends nostalgic dance and pop elements. How do you approach combining these genres in your songs?
I have been very fortunate to work with many talented producers who understand the visions for the records, sometimes without me even having to say anything! I write everything just the piano and me (or the occasional guitar) and sometimes I have very clear sonic references in my head for what I want the production to be. Sometimes I’m not really sure until my producer and I start working on it together. I’ve always said I never wanted to be put in a box or just be one thing, so I really enjoy trying new things and finding ways to combine different genres of music.
Could you share with us your creative process when designing your EP covers and merchandise for your webstore?
I’m very involved in my visuals, and I always want everything to have somewhat of a fantasy feel. Sometimes I even see different songs on the EPs having certain colors per track, and I keep a notes app full of merch and visual ideas at all times. We make a lot of mood boards, and I’m very fortunate to work with a great team who really get the vision and help to bring the fantasies in my head to life!
With collaborations ranging from Timbaland to Tiësto, how do you navigate working with such diverse musical talents while staying true to your own artistic vision, and how much did you learn working with these incredible producers?
I really enjoy being somewhat of a musical sponge, I try to soak up as much as possible from working with other artists as I think there’s always something to learn and be inspired by. I think when I was younger, I used to be afraid to speak up and voice my opinions. Now I feel much more confident in what I want, and how I want things to feel. I think working with such talents really helped me find my own voice. Once you realize everyone has the same goal (to make a good record everyone is proud of) it becomes easy.
“The Storm” with TheFatRat was a significant success. How did that collaboration come about, and what did you learn from that experience?
The goal in working with TheFatRat was actually always to sing in Na’vi. He had learnt I could speak the language and enjoyed that, and wanted to make a track featuring it. The nerdy 10-year-old in me was absolutely thrilled about that. I learnt that not only is it ok to be “weird”, it’s actually encouraged! I was bullied in high school quite a lot for speaking that language, and I think seeing the success, and how many people in the video game and fantasy communities became fans of mine from “The Storm,” it was really encouraging. It was also really healing! I felt more confident to be myself after that experience.
Your single “Sunlight” was released in honor of your boyfriend’s birthday. How does personal experience influence your songwriting?
I think my best music comes when I write about my true feelings. I’ve never released a love song before out of a fear of being that vulnerable online; it was something I was always very insecure about. “Sunlight” was actually never supposed to be released, it was supposed to be a private gift to my partner. As I kept writing these love songs, I realized that I wanted to share them! Now, seeing how much people have related to the song, and how many stories I’ve been told by fans about their love for their wives or partners, it’s been so heartwarming and beyond what I could have imagined. I’ve never been more authentic and open than I have with this project, and the feedback has been so encouraging that I definitely plan to prioritize that moving forward.
We’ve heard about your love for fantasy and alternate worlds. How does this passion manifest in your music, specifically in songs like “The Beast Within”?
I love to try and bring fantasy into real life. I’m a sucker for escapism, and for me some of the things that have tugged at my heartstrings the most came from video games or fantasy universes. “The Beast Within” was a full tribute to Avatar, and with how much people enjoyed “The Storm” and the Na’vi specifically, I was excited to flex those muscles and sing in that language more. I’ve actually always wanted to sing in Elvish on a record, so maybe that’s in my future somewhere!
Besides music, you have diverse interests such as playing video games and archery. How do these hobbies inspire or influence your creative process?
I jump at any excuse to be more involved in the video game world. I’ve placed a lot of songs in video games. “Blood Filled Tears” specifically is most well known for being from a game called Lorelai. I feel video games are such an underrated medium in terms of emotional narrative and storytelling, and in many ways they’ve affected me deeper than movies. There have been times I’ve written songs with a specific video game in mind, my song “Widowmaker” actually started as a a tribute to the character in Overwatch. Those sort of things come very naturally to me because I genuinely care about them, and I have a lot of fun incorporating those sort of Easter eggs where I can.
What can fans expect from your upcoming EP, “Wonderlust: The Dawn,” and how does it represent your artistic evolution?
I think fans can expect the most authentic piece of work I’ve created so far in my career. It’s a true homage to love, it’s like nothing I’ve done before and I’m immensely proud of it. Not only is it me at my most vulnerable, but I also do believe they are the strongest songs I’ve written. I hope it shows how far I’ve come as a writer and singer, and I hope it’s a reminder of what a wondrous gift it is to have love in our lives.
