Hot club swing meets big band bounce on Swingset Serenade, a new album spanning decades of musical heritage with jazzy, playful songs for all ages from the ensemble Mel and Friends. Fronted by vocalist/songwriter Melanie Dill, Swingset Serenade is now available digitally and is set for release on vinyl and CD on May 3, 2024.
“This album is probably not what comes to mind when most people think of children’s music,” says Melanie Dill. “Our musicians, many of whom are regulars on the Kansas City jazz scene, come from vastly different backgrounds and are recognized masters of a variety of genres and styles. Swingset Serenade is as much a jazz and swing album for everyone as it is a children’s album.”
“When Melanie and I were kids, the quantity of music produced expressly for children was relatively small, but the quality of much of the music and production was incredibly high. Those records were truly musical events, with a scale and a purpose all their own,” adds Swingset Serenade songwriter/producer Tom Johnson. “We wanted to bring that feeling back, and we also wanted to incorporate the styles of music our parents and grandparents listened to when we were growing up.”
Among the inspirations for Swingset Serenade were early Sesame Street songs, Muppet Show tunes, and Vince Guaraldi’s music for the Peanuts animated TV specials, along with French gypsy jazz, early swing, mid-century big band, salsa music, and bossa nova, or, as Tom says, “basically a warm smash of musical heritage spanning the decades from the 1920s through the 1960s. It’s vintage music reimagined for modern audiences, and it’s bilingual, to boot!”
In the labyrinth of New York’s sonic tapestry, where concrete meets culture, emerges NAIMA, a captivating musical force raised between the bustling borough of Brooklyn and the culturally rich suburb of New Rochelle. Her artistic journey is a seamless blend of analog roots and digital dreams, shaped by the diverse influences of her life. Growing up in an environment where music was a constant companion, NAIMA was introduced to a kaleidoscope of sounds that became the foundation of her musical psyche. From the early days of her youth, her mother exposed her to a wide range of artists and educated her about the lineage of Black music. Ella Fitzgerald, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane, Lenny Kravitz, A Tribe Called Quest, and Dionne Farris, are just some of the many artists that were in heavy rotation at home. Additionally, the infectious sounds of 70s & 80s Funk, Disco, and Pop were a major cornerstone to NAIMA’s musical upbringing. With the likes of Chaka Khan, Earth Wind and Fire, Sister Sledge, Janet Jackson, and The Brothers Johnson, being some of the major contributors to the soundtrack of NAIMA’s childhood. Meanwhile, her Panamanian father, a DJ and producer, further broadened her musical horizons with the global sounds of artists such as Ruben Bladés, Djavan, Fela Kuti Santana, and The Police. NAIMA further pursued her musical education at Berklee College of Music, where she delved into the intricacies of her craft. However it did not take long before the magnetic pull of New York City called her back home. Returning to her mother’s home borough, Queens, NAIMA found her artistic sanctuary. She immersed herself in a thriving community of like-minded artists. The legendary DIY underground stages of C’mon Everybody, H0L0, Trans-Pecos, and Palisades became her creative playground-allowing her to further hone her craft as a performer, producer, songwriter, and singer. This period marked the genesis of her distinctive voice, culminating in her upcoming debut EP, “CITY LIGHTS.” From NYC to Richmond to the deep Oregon forests, Ghost Piss’s sound has changed right alongside songwriter River Allen. Polishing their DIY sound and expounding upon new scenes, new feels and a new world, Dream Girl is an encapsulating nod to the growing pains River experienced throughout their 20s. Ghost Piss is now celebrating the release of their first full length album titled “Dream Girl” and the release of their third music video, “Rude Dudes.” Since River’s mother found a piano on the side of the road when they were three, the self-taught artist has been through many chapters of musicianship and life, developing a unique sound that allowed River to book over 100 shows across the country before releasing their debut EP ‘Blushing’ on Brooklyn label Styles Upon Styles in 2021. Ghost Piss’s versatile sound allowed for them to play alongside an eclectic array of musicians such as The Space Lady, Barrie, Sporting Life, and Fuck U Pay Us. River’s time spent performing and tending bar at NYC dance venues (as well as tending the garden at The Lot Radio), and tending to the Oregon forest while working as a botanist for the National Park service were equally important in crafting their tongue-and-cheek, and effortlessly personal Electro Pop sound. Ghost Piss combines River’s love of mainstream pop hooks, heavy house beats, and the succinct and minimalist compositions of their favorite composer Erik Satie- using repetition as a means of progression and meditation. River’s proficient mastery of the MC-505 can be heard on Dream Girl, accomplishing the goal of taking one piece of gear to its absolute limit. River started Ghost Piss to create a space for playfulness, but Dream Girl doesn’t shy away from biting, emotional confessions. ‘Dream Girl’ wears its heart on its sleeve, but not in the way you would expect. Ghost Piss manages to weave dark personal experiences of mistreatment, heartbreak and crippling imposter syndrome with empowering beats, playful production and complex textures. Inspired by sparkles, HitClips, rattling 808s, and imperfections, Ghost Piss hopes to remind you that emotions are beautiful, pink is punk, and life is fun.
In Roots of Fire, a group of musicians honor the rich history and cultural legacy of Cajun music. The genre’s contemporary scene in Louisiana has found mainstream success with Grammy Award nominations and wins, but shuttering venues and aging fans leave some questioning the music’s longevity. Featuring electrifying performances, this vibrant documentary examines the intersection between music and preserving tradition for future generations.
HERDD is the product of Frankie Cote, who brews up diverse electro-pop with a focus on being unafraid to challenge genre norms. On the upcoming album Afterlife, snapshots of Cote’s recovery from past mental health crises are navigated in a cathartic way, along with themes of sexual liberation and healing from past relationships. HERDD‘s unique take on songwriting has enabled him to work with multi-platinum award winning producer Rob Wells (Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber) and even earned him praise from Billboard as an artist similar to “early Gaga with shades of Daft Punk“. Afterlife will be unveiled to the world on May 10th.
Sonically containing a slower tempo than the previous singles released for this album, the titular track “Big Wave” casts Razor Braids in a more emotional light. An ode to heartbreak experienced as a result of a failed platonic relationship, the track oozes in melancholy and fits like a warm hug. Synonymous with a wave, these destabilizing feelings can swoop in and carry away their prey just as the Brooklyn three piece lament. With yearning vocals and surfy guitar tones, the new track is perfect for a breezy spring day.
f 0 0 d explores the grief, hope and uncertainty of letting go of a codependent relationship; in this case, one with food. The single distinguishes itself on beccs’ upcoming EP as the one track the artist, known for her powerhouse vocals, produced herself. In total beccs fashion, she takes a stigmatized topic and talks about it under the guise of a cool, textural alternative pop track. Written at an earlier point in her recovery after realizing her eating disorder, while seemingly inactive, still fueled her thoughts and intentions, beccs strived to see the world without the veil of her eating disorder obscuring it.
We can see/hear beccs on the precipice of letting go of patterns that no longer serve her, inspiring listeners to leave space to reflect, heal and let go of whatever is holding them back. The fluid track echoes trance-like sound baths sparking self actualization and healing. It flows with harmonic and rhythmic twists and turns, surprising and guiding listeners forward into a final body of water – a space to process.
Philadelphia’s Julia Pratt announces her new EP Family Feud with the release of “Chronos, Cruel Handler.” Set to arrive on May 10 via RECORDS, Pratt bares her most core anguish through music, from the destruction of her family, to her lived experiences as a woman of color, in hopes that laying it all out there makes some sense of her journey. While applying R&B techniques to indie-folk, her sky-grazing music exists as a deeply necessary form of therapy that aims to let listeners know they were never truly alone — Pre-save Family Feud.
Today’s new single, “Chronos, Cruel Handler” centers Pratt’s beatific voice over lithe, looping guitar lines and shifting brushed percussion. Named for the ancient Greek mythological symbol of time, the track’s imagist lines center on domestic imagery and questions of fault, the energy ramping to a pained confrontation. “Product of the past/ Don’t you know they lied to you?” Pratt’s heavenly falsetto wonders, more in sorrow than accusation — Stream.
“‘Chronos’ is the personification of time, and that is exactly what this song represents. In some sense writing ‘Carolina’ felt like it killed a part of me, and ‘Chronos’ is what came after a period of reflecting on that death,” Pratt contemplates. “It arose from thinking about generational trauma and about my father. In this song I contrast our upbringings, and unpack the cycle that has repeated in both of our lives — the cycle that has most likely repeated over and over again in the lives of those that came before us as well.”
“Feeling small and misunderstood, shunned and shut down, repressed and silenced. In this song, I come to understand how that led to the violence and destruction that was unleashed on me as a child. I empathize deeply, and yet it was wrong and undeserved.”

The EP is available on all major streaming platforms. See track listing below.
Too Grown Men is the culmination of two years of meticulous crafting and two days of intensive collaboration in the studio. Producer Shankar, renowned for his expertise in Indian classical and fusion music having worked with the likes of VidyaVox, Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, and is the founder of ShrutiBox, adds an extraordinary musical depth to the EP.
Despite their long standing friendship, the trio had never worked together until the making of this album. The EP is a testament to their seamless creative synergy and ability to blend carefree vibes with profound narratives. Too Grown Men explores themes of heartbreak, struggle, and defying stereotypes, reflecting the personal growth and experiences of each of the artists.
“It’s been a minute since I’ve been in a group, and Kaly and I had been talking about collabing again for years and I was feeling all of Shankar’s production ideas so I was excited to dive in with full focus and zero expectations,” says UTK. “The recording process was so easy. We built everything in the studio and wrote together as a trio. It all felt so effortless even though we were working our asses off. Every idea led to a new one, and the spirit felt easy and pure.”
After emerging in 2020 with their distinct sound and high-profile collaborations with Lane 8, Bob Moses, and releases on Armada, mau5trap, Anjunadeep, and more, Kasablanca’s rapid rise was nearly derailed in 2023 when one-half of the duo, renowned producer Shaun Frank (known for co-writing The Chainsmokers’’ #1 hit “Closer“) received a devastating cancer diagnosis. With the same passion he brings to his craft, Frank bravely persevered through the remainder of their headline tour until urgently undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Now awaiting full remission results, Kasablanca unveiled their poignant new single “Remission” with Lane 8 during an emotional comeback performance at Ultra Music Festival last month. The duo will be touring worldwide in support, with upcoming shows at EDC Las Vegas, Cityfox New York, Bonnaroo, and more.
Spurts is the sentimental slacker rock group composed of hometown friends Robert Sanlis (guitar / vocals), Nathan Graves (keys), Chris Schubert (bass) and Jack Kovacich (drums). With their DIY recordings and energetic live performances, Spurts deliver music that embodies listening to a playlist full of forgotten 90’s bangers. acclaimed Irish indie rock band Pillow Queens dive into intoxicating feelings with punchy, cathartic track and official video ” Heavy Pour ” out now ahead of their LP release this Friday, April 19. The band’s triumphant third studio album Name Your Sorrow is due out April 19 and available for pre-order now . This June, Pillow Queens will perform live across the UK and will support Snow Patrol in Limerick, IR on July 12 ahead of their biggest show to date on July 13 at Dublin, Ireland’s Iveagh Gardens. Tickets are on sale now for all shows via pillowqueens.com/live .
Out today, the band share the honest, searing “Heavy Pour,” a track that lays the foundation for a story of unshakable conviction in the face of doubt and feeling inadequate. Sonically, lead guitarist and vocalist Cathy McGuinness shares, ” It feels like a bit of a bizarre journey or a fever dream.” Opening with a 90s grunge vibe, twangy distorted guitars and open strings, it gets progressively heavier before a cathartic release. McGuinness says, “The guitar becomes more palatable in the middle eight, totally contradicting the previous section of discordant chaos. It then falls into a glorious half time with ‘oohs’ to support the instruments, giving a feeling of clarity and resolve before snapping back to the chorus.” Lyrically, lead vocalist, guitarist and bassist Pamela Connelly adds, “A lot of the lines in this song could convey the typical sweetness of a love song, but it has brief moments of outside perspectives that cast doubt over the conviction represented. The song tries to show the “heavy pour” as a compulsion that while having moments of joy, ultimately heightens personal insecurities.”
The band also touches on gender and common misconceptions with the line, ” I want more, but I’m not man enough .” Vocalist, guitarist and bassist Sarah Corcoran says talk regarding that line has sparked conversations about gender, particularly the tendency to equate masculinity with bravery. “Intrigued by this dynamic, we wanted to delve into and dissect the idea that one’s gender expression is impacted by their perceived level of courage. Spoiler: it’s not. All genders can be courageous and/or scared.”

Pioneering Detroit techno music producer and DJ Carl Craig is Tribeca-bound.
The Tribeca Film Festival (June 5-16, 2024) has officially selected Desire: The Carl Craig Story, the new documentary feature from Jean-Cosme Delaloye (Harley) celebrating the Detroit techno legend to screen in the Festival’s Spotlight+ section.
Desire: The Carl Craig Story follows Carl Craig’s genre-defying career, from his middle class roots to global acclaim, as the producer faces challenges that could keep him away from the dance floor. The film, which wrapped production in February, will have its world premiere at Tribeca on June 12, 2024 at 8pm at The Indeed Theater at Spring Studios. Tribeca will also host a press and industry screening on June 13 with subsequent Festival public screenings on the 13th and 15th.
Desire: The Carl Craig Story is an intimate portrait of legendary techno producer, DJ and record label founder Carl Craig and an ode to his beloved city, Detroit. Raised in a middle class African American family, Carl’s parents fostered his artistic pursuits, even if that meant breaking with his family’s tradition of pursuing higher education. With Detroit’s decline and recovery as a backdrop, “Desire: The Carl Craig Story” follows the career of a musical pioneer whose genre-defying techno music— which was inspired by a wide range of sounds, has been performed to jazz enthusiasts at the Montreux Jazz Festival and adapted for classical auditoriums around the world, including Carnegie Hall. Thirty-five years into his music career, Carl Craig, a leading figure of the second generation of Detroit techno artists, has now been embraced by the visual arts world through his Party / After Party installation, with recent exhibitions at MOCA in Los Angeles and Dia Beacon in New York. But at the pinnacle of his creative and deejaying success, the musician faces challenges that could ultimately force him to stay away from the dance floor.
The film features artists including Gilles Peterson, Roni Size, Laurent Garnier, DJ Minx, Kenny Larkin, Moritz von Oswald and James Lavelle, who worked with Craig and played a major role in bringing techno and electronic music to the masses over the years.
“Desire” is produced by Dan Wechsler for Switzerland’s Bord Cadre Films and Andreas Roald on behalf of the U.K.’s Sovereign Films. The companies previously collaborated on “Triangle of Sadness.” The film is supported by the Federal Office of Culture (Switzerland) and the regional film fund Cinéforom (Geneva).
