John Krasinski may just be my favourite writer/director, from A Quiet Place to now IF, you can see just how much his projects mean to him. In his latest film, IF, Krasinski invites us to rediscover the magic of our inner child. With a blend of creativity, heartwarming moments, and delightful performances, this imaginative tale celebrates the power of belief and the wonder of imaginary friends.
IF encourages us to keep our inner child alive. It’s a reminder that imagination knows no bounds and that sometimes, believing in the impossible can lead to extraordinary adventures. Krasinski introduces the film as one expressly for the “girl dads.” While it’s family-friendly, it resonates more with adults who want something beyond typical kid fare. Think “Minions” with a dash of maturity. Cailey Fleming shines as Bea, a young girl grappling with loss. Her ability to see imaginary friends (IFs) adds a whimsical twist to her life. Fiona Shaw’s portrayal of her grandmother is a highlight.
Ryan Reynolds plays Calvin, a cynical IF whisperer. He runs a matchmaking service for IFs whose kids have stopped believing in them. Bea joins him on a mission to save these forgotten companions. The film’s structure and themes evoke Pixar classics. Grainy home movies introduce us to Bea’s playful family, and the adventure unfolds like a live-action adaptation of a Pixar gem.
Bea’s imagination transforms an IF retirement home, creating kaleidoscopic scenes reminiscent of Busby Berkeley. Reynolds climbing through an oil painting is a standout moment. IF tugs at our heartstrings, celebrating the beauty of life’s simple joys. Shaw’s character reconnects with her love of ballet, dancing alongside her former IF (Phoebe Waller-Bridge).
While IF isn’t completely flawless like some of Krasinski’s other films, but its heart remains intact, IF teaches us that belief matters. When we stop believing, we lose something magical. Bea’s determination to save the IFs reminds us to cherish wonder.
IF is a delightful journey into imagination. Krasinski’s sincerity shines through, leaving us with a warm, optimistic feeling. So, suspend disbelief and let IF take you on a whimsical ride!
