INsiders Guide: Marella, rlyblonde, POUNDSIDE POP, BLACK EYED PEAS, Mark Winters, Xan DuBose…

Originally from the Bay Area, Marella is an emerging singer-songwriter striving to create authentic music that speaks to his audience. A former Division 1 swimmer and music major at UC Santa Barbara, his craft is molded by his real-life experiences over the years from rigorous academics to competitive extracurriculars. Now based in Los Angeles, Marella serves as a drummer for several bands in the area, while primarily focusing on the Marella project. He is gaining traction quickly, as his recently released single “I Think She’s In Love With Me” gained attention from notable press outlets including Jammerzine, Buzz Bands LA, and antiMusic.

rlyblonde – the project of Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist Carina Allen – returns with her new single, “Dumb Blonde.” Teeming with buzzy guitar riffs and clever, confessional lyricism, “Dumb Blonde” is a wholly addictive pop-rock anthem.

The song follows rlyblonde’s inner monologue as she fights against the little voice in her head that tells her everything is just a moment away from falling apart. “Life is unpredictable,” rlyblonde quips. “One day you’re on top of the world, the next day you’re having a meltdown…you’re never going to hit a point where you stop facing challenges, especially as an artist. So when things ARE good, you might as well enjoy it, even if it’s just for one night.”

After years of being the go-to photographer, videographer and creative director for New York’s favorite indie acts, rlyblonde reintroduced herself in 2023 as a DIY rock darling with the release of her debut EP, ‘Fantasy.’ She released 5 self-directed & produced music videos alongside the EP, performed at iconic venues across New York City, and captured the attention of key tastemakers like The Luna Collective and Unpublished Magazine.

Keen to continue growing and evolving as an artist, rlyblonde has been working with producer and multi-instrumentalist Robbie Guariglia (The Veronicas, Oh Honey, Native Sun) and is now ready to reveal a whole new chapter of music. “It’s been such a gift to work with someone who is willing to take the time to properly flesh out a song and sound, who wants to really understand what is going on inside my brain, and who can help me translate all of that into my music,” rlyblonde explains of her experience working with Robbie on her new songs. “It’s been invaluable and I think it shows in the music.”

Poundside Pop, the standout North Philly rapper ready to catapult onto the national scene, sticks the landing today with the release of his new EP, Clear Vision. The EP, clocking in at seven songs, includes guest features from superstar and Philly native Skilla Baby, Lil Buckss, OTZ Quany nd Scrilla, and is available now.

The Song of the Summer has arrived! Black Eyed Peas have teamed up with Latin superstars El Alfa and Becky G for “TONIGHT (Bad Boys: Ride Or Die),” the lead single from the soundtrack of the highly anticipated new installment of the Bad Boys franchiseBad Boys: Ride Or Die. The explosive track arrives today – get it at all DSPs HERE. The soundtrack will be released on June 7, 2024 when Bad Boys: Ride Or Die arrives in theaters. Pre-order/Pre-save the soundtrack HERE.

Recruiting Black Eyed Peas for the latest Bad Boys soundtrack is a natural choice given the runaway success of “RITMO (Bad Boys for Life)” — the breakout hit from Bad Boys for Life soundtrack.  That irresistible banger, which samples Corona’s 1993 single“Rhythm of the Night,” by Corona, surpassed more than one billion streams on YouTube alone. Not only that, the track topped Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Hot Latin Songs and Latin Airplay charts — and went double platinum.

This summer, the world’s favorite Bad Boys are back with their iconic mix of edge-of-your seat action and outrageous comedy but this time with a twist: Miami’s finest are now on the run. Bad Boys: Ride Or Die arrives in theaters on June 7.

Mark Winters, an indie-rocker and real-life rocket scientist, drops the lyric video for his latest single “Speed of Light” today, offering a visual relativity experience that marries his love for astrophysics with his sonic craft.

Mark Winters is no stranger to the spotlight. As a multifaceted artist, he seamlessly blends soulful songwriting with thought-provoking poetry, earning him comparisons to musical icons like John Mayer, Tom Petty, and Jason Mraz. Winters brings a unique and quirky perspective to his craft, setting him apart as a true innovator in the indie-rock scene.

“Embarking on a ride at the ‘Speed of Light’ unveils the universe’s secrets, from the shifting gears of quantum realms to the vibrant blooms revealed by cosmic velocities,” says Winters. “It’s more than music; it’s a journey through the mysteries of space, time, science and the heart.”

Genre-bending artist Xan DuBose (she/her) presents the second single, “Vice”, from her highly anticipated upcoming EP set to release in August 2024.

“Vice” showcases what makes DuBose an “artist on the rise” – her powerhouse vocals that leave audiences feeling confident and empowered. Effortlessly blending elements of jazz, soul, and contemporary country flavor, DuBose’s voice is uniquely her own and sets the perfect sassy cadence for what the song is about… succumbing to one’s own “vice”. For some it’s money, for some it’s alcohol, but in this song the vice is a relationship… a person you can’t live without.

In 2022, Amazon Music heralded Tadhg as their ‘Artist to Watch,’ while Spotify featured him on playlists like ‘Life Sucks’ and ‘Wake Up Happy.’ Apple Music also recognized his talent, including him in playlists such as ‘New Music Daily,’ ‘New in Pop,’ and ‘Feeling Blue,’ amongst others.

rising New York-based artist Ella Galvin announces her debut EP, ‘The Way It Goes,’ out June 14th, and presents the EP’s title track and accompanying music video

Combining soulful vocals, catchy pop hooks, and grooving rock instrumentation, “The Way It Goes” upholds Ella’s penchant for eluding genre limitations. “‘The Way It Goes’ is a song about going back and forth between wanting to see your ex and not wanting to reopen those wounds again and risk being disappointed,” says Ella.

The single arrives alongside Ella’s first official music video. Filmed in New York City and directed by Cel Sanel, the video introduces viewers to the different facets of Ella, from her love of fashion to her queer identity.

Taking influence from pop, soul, jazz and rock, Ella’s songs showcase her fondness for experimentation and innovation. Her upcoming EP, ‘The Way It Goes,’ out June 14th, masterfully combines her genre-blending musical influences with diaristic storytelling that explores themes of love, loss, and self-identity. Across the EP’s 6-tracks, Ella captures the charm, growing pains and introspection she’s experienced as a young, queer woman trying to make it in New York City,

Ella Galvin got her start performing in a variety of fusion bands in Boston and New York before branching out with her own solo project in 2022. She’s spent the last few years developing her sound and fine-tuning her live show with performances around New York City. With early support pouring in from tastemakers like Unpublished Magazine and The Honey Pop, Ella Galvin is an artist you’re going to want to keep an eye on.

Alternative pop band Valley return with a brand new track, “When You Know Someone,” out today through Capitol Records/Universal Music Canada. Although the song was born out of the uncertainty in grief there’s a sense of familiarity as if Valley have returned to their roots. Karah’s harmonica blares with urgency over a loop Rob had worked on, inspired by Bruce Springsteen and The Killers, a bit of an arena-rock sound that seems like it should be soundtracking a pivotal scene in a cult classic — Stream.

“We wrote ‘When you Know Someone’ with Trent Dabbs (Kacey Musgraves, COIN, Ingrid Michaelson) who helped us channel the emptiness we were feeling,” Karah explains. “He sang the lyric ‘when you know someone, think you know someone’ and I remember all of us just feeling so exposed and so seen by him in that moment. It’s a beautiful feeling of safety when you can write a song with people that truly understand where you’re coming from, you can’t hide and that’s powerful.”

Fans can tune into Valley’s YouTube to watch the premiere for the “When You Know Someone” live video at 12:00PM EDT today. The video was filmed at RC Harris water treatment plant, Valley explains, “We were looking for a sense of brutalism mixed with beauty for this video and a lot of open space because the song feels very empty yet scenic.”

• “Some of my favorite songs were in the era of Tammy Wynette and George Jones. ‘fault line’ is my take on writing one of those classic, ‘I’m gonna rip your head off’ country songs. The playful angst in this song makes it one of my favorite moments on the record.” – Carly Pearce

• Fans can catch Pearce on the road as direct support for all dates of Tim McGraw’s Standing Room Only arena tour and on the Nissan Stadium Main Stage at CMA Fest on June 9 in Nashville.

MERGUI
Shadows of Blue

• Mergui releases his sophomore EP, Shadows of Blue, featuring focus track, “On My Way Up.” The EP was co-produced by Mergui and several industry icons including David Foster (Madonna, Michael Jackson) and acclaimed singer-songwriter/producer, K-KOV. Mergui will make his debut on NBC’s TODAY Show on May 21 with a performance of his previously released single, “Happy Now?.”

• “I’d love for people to find their own stories within these songs — because even though they’re so specific to my life and the things that I’ve been through, I think there’s something universal about all of these emotions. It feels really exciting to have created something that’s so meaningful to me on a personal level, with a sound that surprises me every single time I hear it. The whole process of making this EP was so different from everything I’ve done in the past, and I can’t wait to keep exploring and evolving and see what we come up with next.” – Mergui

Rising bass producer/DJ Noer the Boy returns with his new Mr. Gibbons EP out now via HypnoVizionMr. Gibbons arrives following Noer the Boy’s previously released titular single.

Mr. Gibbons continues to see Noer the Boy craft a charismatic soundtrack around his squiggly character. Accompanying the previously released titular single ‘Mr. Gibbons’ are two bold new tracks that emphasize Noer the Boy’s proclivity for textured sound design. The EP offers a dynamic array of experimental bass and minimal trap, from the wonky twists and turns of ‘Anuthaone’ to the glitchy breakbeats of ‘Six Six Six’.

“I’m a big fan of concept records. Each of these three tracks represent the nonchalant and unstoppable march of Mr. Gibbons. He’s unaware of his powers and only wants to keep moving and exploring and playing. I take a lot of inspiration from classical marches and this is my attempt to transmute those compositional techniques into electronic bass music. Drawing inspiration from older art forms and infusing it with new approaches is a creative goldmine.” – Noer the Boy

Hudson Valley-based singer-songwriter Jack Manley shares the tender, contemplative debut solo EP Unmeasurable Terms out everywhere now. Alongside the release of the full project, Manley shares the candid title track–an unflinching meditation on a life poorly lived–a song about failure and consequence, alongside its official lyric video. Tonight, Manley will celebrate the EP release with a hometown live show at BIGCAT in Kingston, NY with special guest King In Yellow.

Written entirely by Jack Manley, the revelatory EP chronicles his journey towards sobriety using confessional songwriting that poured out of him in the throes of a tortuous time. After a lifelong struggle with addiction, an overdose in 2023 landed the musician in the hospital where he picked up a guitar and found healing within the music that emerged. Manley shares, “Writing music has always been how I process and release my emotions. The songs that came out of me then were deeply personal as I reflected on my failures, regrets, sickness, and love.” On the project as a whole, Manley calls it a “sonic collage of memories, both real and imagined,” and adds, “each track on ‘Unmeasurable Terms’ represents a different stage within the process of using or rehabilitation.”

A self-taught musician, Manley approaches songwriting by feel, playing around until it sounds right and the words flow naturally out of him. He works with his bandmates, including Josh Eppard (Coheed and Cambria) and guitar player Billy Pearson, to compose the accompanying parts until they land on melodic, moving music that examines all of humanity, never straying from even the most agonizing parts. The project marks Manley’s first solo venture–one that confronts difficult truths and wrestles with addiction, failures, regrets and love, bringing some of the artist’s darkest moments into light.

Praising the musician and describing the project, Eppard shares, “Jack Manley has carved out a piece of his soul and put it on display for us–a bridge into the darkness of addiction, the great dark that shrouds us all and the crippling self-doubt that is simply part of the human condition. A poets’ battle for his own soul–and he’s invited us along.”

Born and raised in South-Central Trinidad, John Orpheus is a multi-cultural musician, author and performance artist. Since releasing his previous album SAGA KING in 2021, he has been busy promoting his memoir SAGA BOY (Penquin Random House) and writing two children’s books and a forthcoming debut novel called BLACK CHEROKEE (Simon and Schuster). He also found the time to write and produce a new EP: GET RIGHT! It combines John Orpheus’ playfulness, fluency and affection for the past. The EP demonstrates an evolving set of tastes in Funk, Punk and Pop that maintains the artist’s vibe of welcoming in the whole diaspora: from dancehall to hip hop to funk to Afrobeats. John Orpheus and his writing alter ego Antonio Michael Downing are co-creative forces on an artistic roll in 2024.

John Orpheus’ musical journey has taken him from the Caribbean bush to festivals across Canada and the US to opening for Liam Gallagher on a UK tour. John is known for his rabble-rousing live shows filled with audience participation, chanting and impromptu dance-offs that feel more like Caribana road parties than concerts. Lush with funk, hip hop swagger and “whole school” vibes, the GET RIGHT! EP is a catchy, funky, fun send up of the era when funk, punk and pop could all be found on the same dancefloor. Influenced by early Prince, Rick James and 90s Hip Hop’s affection for Parliament Funkadelic, GET RIGHT! is a throwback that feels like 2024. “I think we all could use a dance party right about now. GET UP! GET DOWN! GET RIGHT!”

Greensky Bluegrass have unveiled The Iceland Sessions featuring Holly Bowling out today via Thirty Tigers. The new EP was recorded at Flóki Studios in the summer of 2023, just before the band’s first-ever Icelandic run of shows at Reykjavik’s Harpa Concert Hall. “We invited some of our favorite friends and musicians to play with us, including Holly Bowling, and we set out to make memories in the twilight sun with a bunch of fans who joined us from all over the world,” recalls Paul Hoffman. Bowling has been a regular guest in Greensky’s band lineup throughout the last several years and the chemistry between Bowling and the band is undeniable.

Flóki Studios is located in a very remote section of northern Iceland, and for Greensky, that’s precisely what was needed. A very intense few days that drew out creativity and inspiration not yet tapped by the band. “We embraced the disorienting inspiration and played late into the night as the sun never left us, all the while still developing lyrics and figuring out harmonies and arrangements. We swam in the cold water. We saw more sheep than people for days. We listened to the birds sing through the night while we charged through each song. A recording project that felt like a whirlwind at times turned into something calm and peaceful that felt more creative and raw than anything we’ve done before. Fully aware that we could continue to work on this later, we decided to commit to what we created in Iceland and have the recording be truly a moment in time.”

For the past four years, the award-winning, Juno-nominated, SOCAN #1 bilingual Canadian songwriter, recording artist and producer Maïa Davies has been on a stubbornly unwavering mission of deep musical and self-discovery.

Born in Montreal, Davies has devoted the vast majority of her life to the craft of music. Getting her start in the Warner Music signed folk band Ladies of the Canyon, she has released two solo albums in French and penned over 12 top ten commercial radio hits for Canadian music artists, including Mother Mother and Serena Ryder.

In 2019, following the dissolution of an intense but ultimately toxic relationship, Davies also left her role at a notable Toronto-based production house and decided to shed all geographical allegiances. Taking on a nomadic lifestyle for a few years, she began traveling from BC to Halifax, then off to Europe’s Stockholm, Paris and Spain, landing in California for a long while, writing, dreaming up and carefully constructing her songs on the matter at hand: her devastated, roughed up and beaten, broken into a million pieces big heart. She toiled over endless lyric rewrites, explored sonic paths in her imagination and took novelesque notes on her hopes for the result. Landing later on back in Canada, she headed straight to the studios to commence recording what would become her forthcoming 9-song opus, Lovers’ Gothic. Skip ahead 18 months to the meticulously crafted, finished offering: the kind of achingly honest music that can only be generated from a wound so deep it needs space and time to heal.

“Songs and writing are the best way my body knows how to express pain to date,” Davies explains. “I was in a very dark place for a long time, but the songs helped me save and heal myself in so many quantifiable ways. Admitting that I was not ok and transforming that self-knowledge into my lyrics gave me a tremendous amount of emotional release and allowed me to start processing my deepest true feelings.”

In top tier studios across the country, Maïa recorded these raw confessions, pulling together an A list of friends to imaginatively co-produce with her. At Pierre Marchand’s legendary Montreal Studio Pm, Halifax’s Joel Plaskett-owned Fang Recording, Vancouver’s expansive and classic Hipposonic, to name but a few, she worked tirelessly on arrangement and instrumentation experiments with talented producers Marcus Paquin (Begonia), Erin Costelo (Kaïa Kater), TWIGG (Ben L’Oncle Soul), Andy Stochansky (Ani DiFranco, Lola Lennox), Sarah MacDougall (Ariana Fig), Brandon Bliss (Monster Truck) and David Mohacsi (Rêve, Mother Mother). Other notable contributions came from Edmonton co-writer Lyle Bell (Shout Out Out Out Out, The Wet Secrets), drummer Glenn Milchem (Blue Rodeo), drummer Jimmy Paxson (Stevie Nicks, The Chicks) and viola east coast darling Kinley (Hey Rosetta).
