Chris Nash’s In a Violent Nature defies the conventions of traditional horror. Rather than relying on jump scares or high-wire tension, this hyperviolent slasher takes an unexpected approach. Set against the serene backdrop of the Canadian wilderness, the film invites us to see the world through the eyes of its implacable horror monster, Johnny. As he methodically seeks out victims, Nash’s camera follows him with a patient, almost meditative gaze. The result is an arthouse experiment that challenges our perception of horror.
Filmed in Ontario, In a Violent Nature introduces us to Johnny, a scarred and silent killer. His backstory remains shrouded in mystery, but we learn of a logging town’s spurned members seeking vengeance. Armed with woodcutting tools, Johnny roams the forest, driven by a relentless purpose. His victims—hapless truckers, teenagers, and park rangers—fall prey to his insatiable hunger for blood.
Nash’s choice of a vintage 4:3 aspect ratio and long takes creates an intimate connection with Johnny. We follow him from behind, like a third-person video game character. The quiet stretches—reminiscent of A24’s minimalist aesthetic. Unlike classic slashers, In a Violent Nature doesn’t scare us outright. Instead, it asks the questions, What drives Johnny? How does he reconcile his monstrous acts? The film captures the realism of his carnage. We witness disembowelment and violence, yet Nash refrains from gratuitous shock.
Reece Presley’s park ranger adds intrigue. His familiarity with Johnny hints at a shared history—a tantalizing suggestion that we’re witnessing a later chapter in a series of films about this enigmatic killer. Presley’s presence balances the film’s calmness, injecting moments of urgency.
In a Violent Nature won’t appeal to everyone. It lacks character development and plot intricacies, focusing instead on raw carnage. Yet, its unique perspective and malevolent style elevate it beyond mere shock value. A must watch for any horror fan.
In A Violent Nature is in cinemas exclusively August 1-4
