Chicago-based artist Lia Kohl announced her third full-length album, Normal Sounds, set for release on August 30 via Moon Glyph. A sought-after cellist and composer,  Kohl has collaborated with esteemed artists such as Makaya McCraven, Whitney, Finom, Circuit des Yeux, Friko, Steve Gunn, claire rousay, Matchess (Whitney Johnson), Steve Hauschildt, among many others. Her previous album, The Ceiling Reposes, was critically lauded by publications like Bandcamp, Pitchfork, The Quietus, and The Chicago Tribune for its innovative use of radio transmissions. With Normal Sounds, Kohl uses everyday noises from contemporary life, revealing profound possibilities within the seemingly ordinary.

Offering a first glimpse into the album, Kohl shared the album’s lead single “Car Alarm, Turn Signal,” which features flute and electronics from respected New York City sound artist Ka Baird. Providing more context to the track and its accompanying self-directed music video, Kohl shared: “‘Car Alarm, Turn Signal’ is an attempt to capture the overlapping polyrhythms of the streets around my house: a late-night uber home, a car alarm outside the neighborhood market, a turn signal in a bird-filled parking lot. I’ve woven these recordings together, mimicking them with cello and synths, expanding them into a lilting, expansive lullaby. The track opens with Ka Baird’s fierce, avian, flute playing; a shock of sunlight before we’re lulled to sleep. The video mirrors my process in making the album: taking something mundane — in this case, shadows on the sidewalk — and paying enough attention to them to see their beautiful, ephemeral geometry.”

Musician and activist Moby is thrilled to announce that acclaimed soul-jazz singer-songwriter Lady Blackbird, with whom he collaborated on recent critically acclaimed album always centered at night and 2023’s Resound NYC, will be joining him on his first tour in over a decade across Europe/UK this September. Several dates have already sold out, and 100% of his tour profits will go to European animal rights organizations.

The tour will feature his greatest hits, including classics such as “Porcelain,” “Natural Blues” and “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?”, taken from the album Play which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and has sold over 12 million copies worldwide, winning numerous awards and becoming the biggest-selling electronic album of all time.

Earlier this month, Moby released his latest album always centered at night, which features Lady Blackbird on the lead single “dark days,” a defiant, rhythmic work propelled by her alluring, deep vocals and earnest soul.

2024 stands to be another big year for Moby where past endeavors and innovative future music coalesce, still pioneering, with activism at the forefront of everything he does. Always centered at night–the album–is the continuation of the project of the same name that Moby announced in 2022. He saw this project as a similar service to the idiosyncratic New York record shops that he frequented in the late 1980s, where he’d hear something recondite and exciting and it would open up whole new worlds. always centered at night was his way of working with special writers and vocalists to make songs inspired by the spirit of musical discovery.

In his pursuit of new sounds, Moby has become something of a collector of voices. He’s a connoisseur of the timbre and texture of human vocal chords, whether sampling artists like Bessie Jones, Vera Hall or Boy Blue on Play, or working with superstars like David Bowie, Ozzy Osborne and Britney Spears: “I’m always looking. Sometimes it’s about going on YouTube. Sometimes it’s Spotify. Other times, it’s just walking around Lower Manhattan going to karaoke places, where I’ve actually found a couple of singers. It’s this constant process of looking for voices, and getting excited and inspired when I find a wonderful voice.”

Bryce Dessner (CyranoThe Two PopesBardoIrresistibleA Good PersonThe Kitchen), guitarist and co-songwriter of The National reunited with director Greg Kwedar to make the original score for the upcoming acclaimed film Sing Sing. Previously, the pair worked together on Transpecos and Jockey.

Sing Sing stars Colman DomingoClarence MaclinPaul Raci, and Sean San José, and was co-written by Kwedar and Clint Bentley. The story follows a theater troupe that finds escape from the realities of incarceration through the rush of putting on a play. This stirring, true tale of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art stars an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors.

Dessner has pulled strings behind some of the most celebrated films in recent years, conjuring sonic worlds to accompany The RevenantC’mon C’mon, and more. He has collaborated with esteemed artists ranging from Sufjan Stevens to Thom Yorke to Philip Glass. Dessner’s seasoned background across genres has allowed him to become a dexterous force in the studio.

Beloved family musician Doctor Noize (a.k.a. Cory Cullinan) joins forces with 5-time GRAMMY nominee Justin Roberts on “I’m Listening,” a beautiful new song that encourages active listening, something we could all work on more these days. “I’m Listening” will be released with an accompanying video on July 18, 2024.

Timely and relevant to this moment in our national discourse, “I’m Listening” encourages not only kids, but also their grown-ups, to be civil and curious with each other. The song reminds adults that the next generation absorbs everything we say and do and will either learn to be us or not be us.

“‘I’m Listening’ is the result of a four-hour conversation Justin Roberts and I had,” explains Cory Cullinan. “Justin and I were debating an issue we both felt strongly about but didn’t entirely agree on. This started like most disagreements, but instead of digging in our heels, we listened to each other. Justin was deeply and sincerely curious to understand my perspective. He didn’t try to ‘win’ the conversation or leverage the issue for personal gain. I didn’t either. Understanding was the ‘win.’ I walked into the conversation thinking: ‘I don’t know if this guy gets it.’ I walked out thinking: Oh! didn’t quite get it.’ I wasn’t all wrong, but I realized I wasn’t all right. That was the catalyst for ‘I’m Listening.’”

I’m Listening” will be available July 18 on all major platforms. The song is the first single from Doctor Noize’s next album, Positive Energy! (The Music of Doctor Noize), which will be released in March 2025.

‘Hacked Soul’ the new single from east London musical pioneers Hackney Colliery Band. Since 2009, HCB have pushed the boundaries of ‘brass band’ conventions, building a steadfast fanbase with their joyous and expansive live shows, and slew of heralded releases. Now fifteen years deep into their collective journey, and with some incredible career highlights to note (such as performing to 80,000 people at the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London) and a sold-out Barbican Main Hall concert, the twelve piece outfit prepare to announce their fifth full-length offering, the hotly anticipated ‘Collaborations : Volume Two’.

Angélique Kidjo is one of the most revered artists in international music today, a creative force with sixteen albums to her name. Time Magazine has called her “Africa’s premier diva” and named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2021. The BBC has included her in its list of the continent’s 50 most iconic figures, and The Guardian listed her as one of their Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World. Forbes Magazine has ranked Angelique as the first woman in their list of the Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa and she was the recipient of the 2023 Polar Music Prize.

New to the indie-folk scene, but already mesmerizingly timeless, Los Angeles’ Asia Chow today releases her third single “The Sleeping Dog.” Viewed through the lens of her dog Aba’s unwavering contentment, Chow learns how to be more present in the moment. Guided by a slide guitar and her ember-like, full-bodied vibrato, “The Sleeping Dog” feels like a bar song known only by the locals, meant to be queued up between Linda Ronstadt and Neil Young — Stream

“My toxic personality trait is that I must acknowledge every dog that I come across. It’s almost concerning how much I love dogs, shares Chow. “Anyways, I was looking at my dog one day; she looked extra cute and peaceful. I thought about how grateful I was to know her and love her and how she teaches me to be more present and live in the moment. I wrote the song while I was thinking about all that. It had been a goal of mine to write more songs that were not sad girl vibes and it makes a lot of sense that one of them would be inspired by my iconic dog. Love her!”

Pooling together the efforts of her friends and family, today’s official video is a compilation of clips of man’s best friend going about life. It only seems natural that Chow would combine her two greatest passions, music and dogs, as an exercise in grounding herself

A born and bred New Yorker, The Musalini, also known as The Mu$, puts his lifetime in between the paper lines, and he is more authentic than the brownstones the city is famously known for.

The Mu$ never gets lost chasing what is currently trendy.  He is a master lyricist who weaves through melodic grooves with an insatiable thirst, and he does so with an unmistakable and unique sense of style; which once again shines through on his new release Active & Attractive

Since aligning with legendary producer 9th Wonder in 2022 for their joint album The Don & The Eye, and signing with the imprint in 2023, it’s as if a battery was inserted in The Mu$’ back.  Since signing with 9th’s Jamla Records imprint in 2023, The Musalini has broken out at a breakneck speed. the three-piece alternative-pop band Valley, comprised of Rob Laska (lead vocals, guitar), Alex Dimauro (bass), and Karah James (vocals, drums), release “Bass Player’s Brother.” This infectious, drum-driven track features dreamy synths and grooves, all the while telling the story of a toxic, ever-repeating relationship. The song drops on the heels of the singles “When You Know Someone” and the album’s title track Water The Flowers, Pray For A Garden,” with the full album set to arrive on August 30 through Capitol Records/Universal Music Canada

In the band’s words,“‘Bass Player’s Brother’ is a song about cyclical love and obsession. In life we often find ourselves in realities that don’t suit our truth, yet we continue to drag ourselves back to the feeling of staying for love’s sake. It’s cyclical in nature yet rooted in heartache and hurt. It’s the back-and-forth outcome of these habits that cause us to stay when we know we should leave. This is the only song on the album where we didn’t reference real names. Sometimes we like to play characters in songs even though we’re always thinking about someone in our lives. We wanted to paint a picture of a classic Americana heartbreak love story.”

They continue, “We wrote the song after getting stranded in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a wild week. Mickey had just left the band, we didn’t sleep at all, we were in a city where we knew no one — it was the lowest point of the album making process. Chase [Lawrence of COIN] ended up driving to meet us in Charlotte, we rented a house and just started writing. The song started with us giving up on writing one (as most good ones do). You can really hear us trying to have fun with this song (and dis-attach from what we were going through)”

“Once we brought it back to the cabin, we really tried to let the loose, plug and play nature of the song shine through like it’s Valley playing in a room together when we started as teenagers. It’s a bit of an escape on the album as the rest of the songs dive into stages of grief and the past year of our lives a lot deeper.”

critically-acclaimed, multi-platinum selling band Young The Giant releases “Metropolis” from their archives. Never before released, the song was written and recorded by lead singer Sameer Gadhia  in the days of their hit album Mind Over Matter. The band teased the track on their 2023 American Bollywood World Tour by surprising fans with stripped-back acoustic performances of the song several times throughout the summer. This year being the record’s 10-year anniversary, it felt right to share this musical time capsule — Stream

On July 26, Young The Giant will celebrate 10 years of their most successful album with the release of Mind Over Matter (10th Anniversary Edition). Upon its original release, Mind Over Matter (produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen and mixed by Rich Costey) reached #7 on the Billboard 200 chart and #2 on Top Rock Albums. The album’s title track has been a staple of the band’s catalog since and was recently certified Platinum.

The exclusive deluxe version comes in clear smoke vinyl and includes a 12-page booklet, fold-out poster, and an exclusive slipcover — Pre-order / Pre-save. The tracklist includes 3 never-before-released demos and the new song “Metropolis.”

Combining nostalgic familiarity with original excitement, indie-rock band Never Ending Fall today announce that their new record American Disco will be released on August 9 via Create Music Group. Friends and bandmates since a fated talent show performance in the 4th grade, the Maryland natives made the move to Los Angeles a few years ago to take a serious stab at their music careers. In a strange twist of events, the thing that put them on the map was their hit TikTok series ‘Can it Kirkland’  where they compare name brand liquor and Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand. After becoming beloved figures of the internet, a whole new audience was tuned into their music.

In celebration of their album announcement, Never Ending Fall today released the record’s fifth single “Slow Motion.” Hand-crafted for the summer, the hard-hitting track has touches of sultriness, documenting how time slows when you’re falling in love with someone new. Within seconds, Never Ending Fall clears up any doubts whether they are a rock band meant for massive audiences shouting their lyrics back at them — Stream

The band shares that, “‘Slow Motion’ is a summertime indie banger about finding true love. The instrumentation and lyrics provide a feel good, easy listening experience for any music lover.”

Multi-platinum-selling Canadian pop-rock band Marianas Trench, is excited to share their brand new single “I’m Not Getting Better”, out now via 604 Records / Warner Music Canada. The song, which corresponds to the third plot point featured in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey”, is about the fear or insecurity that causes a hero to refuse their call to adventure – and what it takes to get past that.

“I’m Not Getting Better” comes on the heels of the undeniably catchy Lightning and Thunder and A Normal Life, a track about knowing you were meant for something more. “A Normal Life” was the band’s first new studio release since their acclaimed 2019 album, Phantoms. All three new tracks will appear on the band’s highly-anticipated forthcoming album, which is slated to be released later this summer.

Hiding’ is the punchy new single from one-woman indie production Boudicca’s Bass Service.

The song documents the temporary joy of floating away from all your problems, from the hedonistic decision to the flight itself. Straight hitting crunchy riffs, paired with sparkling vocals (engineered by Billboard producer Finlay Thomas), give it all the analogue verve of a 90s grunge record brought to the present day. The tight alt-rock is perfectly offset by distant synth waves, no doubt aided by the fact that Georgina Cotterill aka Boudicca’s Bass Service, spends her day job creating synthesizer plugins at GForce Software.

The single hails in a new era for Boudicca’s Bass Service – ‘Paintings Of Musings Of Music’, her second studio album, is to be released in November. If you are what you eat, then this album has been inspired by a truly unique mix of ingredients. From underground sound systems in forests and synthesizer conventions in Berlin; to Bristol’s experimental jazz and sea shanties on the south-west coast. Reggeaton clubs in sunny Malaga and the bass-heavy Boomtown festival; to Vivaldi in Prague’s oldest church and organ concertos in Vienna.

Bringing these inspirations into a coherent mass would be a challenge for some, yet here they meld together with a natural ease, collating one glistening surreal object of an album.

This experimental and well-lived approach to music has garnered Boudicca’s Bass Service attention from radio stations, blogs and playlists alike. With her songs repeatedly being voted into the ‘Fresh Faves’ over at Fresh On the Net, airplay on BBC Radio 6, Glitterbeam, Exile FM, Amazing Radio, BBC introducing… and truly underground performances in the woods (ears to the ground!), it feels like the emergence of a cool new journey for this young talented artist and her new style of alternative.

Hiding is out now-

singer-songwriter Sydney Sherrill has released her new EP, Luckiest Girl Alive. Introducing listeners to the newest era of her musical journey, she delves into a new sound that is truly her own with a hefty dose of edginess as the backbeat to her Southern-rooted style. Offering a glimpse into a time capsule of her youth, the 5-track EP finds Sydney navigating the stages of a relationship from finding the right person to acknowledging missed opportunities and being hopeful for the future.

“I Like It,” a groundbreaking new single that unites global dance music icon Alesso with American country sensation Nate Smith. This unexpected collaboration bridges the gap between EDM and country, creating a genre-defying summer anthem that’s poised to dominate playlists and airwaves.

Renowned Los Angeles-based Canadian composer Sarah Davachi announced today The Head as Form’d in the Crier’s Choir, her first official album in two years and the tenth release of new music on her imprint, Late Music, due out as a double LP on September 13. The seven compositions on this release, written between 2022 and 2024, form a conceptual suite and an observance of the mental dances that we construct to understand acts of passage; the ways that we commune and memorialize and carry symbols back into the world beyond representation. To this end, The Head as Form’d in the Crier’s Choir engages two references to the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus: Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus, a collection of poems from 1922, and Monteverdi’s l’Orfeo, an early baroque opera from 1607.

The lead album preview released today, “Possente Spirto,” is a loose conceptual reference to the aria “Possente spirto, e formidabil nume” in l’Orfeo. As in Monteverdi’s version, “Possente Spirto” also emphasizes the use of strings and brass and observes a particular order in which they enter and exit, and also incorporates a sort of continuous framework. It departs from there to focus on a slow-moving chord progression and its variations in voicing, inspired by Renaissance concepts of harmony as a vertical structure, set within a standard quarter-comma meantone temperament. The piece employs the same structure that Davachi uses in most of her chamber writing, where each iteration of a performance is slightly different, calling on players to respond in real-time and engage in a more direct form of listening.
