INsiders Guide: Piper Connolly, SOLAR EYES, GALACTIC EMPIRE, LVNDR.SOUND, TYLA….

In the realm of alt-pop, Piper Connolly emerges as a fierce innovator, her music a vibrant mélange of introspection and sonic exploration. Hailing from the arid deserts of Phoenix, Arizona, Piper’s journey began with a passion for the unconventional and a determination to forge her own path.

Comparisons to industry icons like Avril Lavigne and Paramore underscore the appeal of Piper’s sound. With her “unique voice cutting through the noise of today’s ‘lazy whisper range’ popular music scene”, Piper emerges as a standout new artist that seamlessly blends elements of rock and pop, new and old, inviting listeners on an enjoyable musical tumble.

From a very young age, Piper found solace and expression in songwriting, her compositions reflecting the raw emotions of life’s complexities and newfound experiences. Drawing inspiration from all manner of music, from early rock and roll, and jazz, to 90s grunge and ska with a steady undercurrent of R&B and soul, she’s worked to hone a sound that defies blunt categorization, blending elements of indie songwriting, alternative and pop into a storied sonic landscape.

Her single, “kiss like me” is an irresistible and cheeky rebuttal to a crush the artist had. She shares, “It is the ultimate “the grass is greener on THIS side” song. It’s fun and flirty and we wrote it as a fusion of old and new- it features asolid homage to Billy Idol, whom I love, & a modern nod to Olivia Rodrigo.

Onstage, Piper commands attention with a magnetic presence and an infectious energy honed over years of live performance. From intimate club settings to expansive festival stages, she captivates audiences with her dynamic performances.

Beyond her music, Piper is a vocal advocate for authenticity and self-expression, using her platform to champion individuality and empowerment. As she explores the boundaries of alt-pop, she continues to inspire others to embrace their true selves through her music and activism, serving as a beacon of creativity and authenticity in a world hungry for genuine voices and connection.

With their Autumn tour imminent  – SOLAR EYES – launch back into action with an official video for new single: “Deep Trip”.

WATCH “DEEP TRIP” HERE

Shaded with the technicolour LCD-infused daydreamings of early Pink Floyd, and streaked with the sonic chem trails of shoegaze trailblazers like Spacemen 3, “Deep Trip” is the blissed-out new single from Solar Eyes. Mysterious, trippy, and titanic, in equal parts, of the new single the band say:

“”Deep Trip” was inspired after watching ‘True detective’ – the second series, where the girl is playing in the bar. It has a Pink Floyd feel too, the guitar at the end is Epic.”

Cited by Solar Eyes as possibly their “favourite track” of their self-titled 2024 debut record ‘Solar Eyes’, the album closer is now released with a suitably lo-fi official video. Set against the spectacular coastal backdrop of Biarritz, France, at the height of summer, the video features footage of frontman Glenn Smyth lost in thought interspersed with footage of marine life in all their enigmatic elegance. Filmed after the band played a festival in the Basque Country earlier this year, fans can tune into the video now here:

Gordo Flea” which have seen LVNDR.SOUND receive acclaim from EDM JoyYour EDMThe Nocturnal TimesGrateful WebThe Music EssentialsCULTR, and more. Known for their one-of-a-kind sound and signature modern production style, LVNDR.SOUND fuses styles such as future bass, electro soul, house, hip hop, and nu-age funk to push the boundaries of genre to create something truly unique, such as on their debut album Lavender which Magnetic Magazine called “a must-hear album for anyone looking to discover the next big thing in electronic music.”

GRAMMY-winning global superstar unleashes the official music video for “Breathe Me,” off her record-setting debut studio album, TYLA. The “Breathe Me” video, directed by Nabil, marks the fourth song off Tyla’s self-titled debut LP to receive a video feature since “Water.”

Havelin (Alex Zaichkowski) is an acclaimed (unofficially) singer-songwriter (allegedly) whose passion for music began at a young age and will continue until his untimely demise (which will likely come at the hands of some great warrior or foul beast… or, more likely, slipping on a banana peel).

Alberta-born Zaichkowski has been described as “a real pleasure” to listen to by Shania Twain one time (a thing which actually happened, there’s proof). His songs weave rich narratives into pleasant melodies, while his storytelling strives to unpack complex emotions in a way that is both uniquely personal and heart-wrenchingly universal.

His upcoming record “Who Among Us…” (release date TBA) deals with themes of life, death, love, heartbreak, and identity. It’s a tribute to feeling intensely and embracing the strangeness and beauty this world has to offer.

Neo-psychedelic French creatives La Femme are back with their latest offering “Clover Paradise” the second single taken from their highly anticipated full-length album “Rock Machine” written entirely in English.

Following on from their last release “Ciao Paris!”, “Clover Paradise” proves to be another reminder as to why La Femme are revered as one of the most exciting and refreshing groups emanating from Europe right now. Syncopated percussion lays the perfect foundation for trippy synths intertwined with smooth and nonchalant vocals, whilst powerful guitar solos remind us of the band’s true musicality.

Active for well over 10 years, La Femme have racked up a hugely impressive catalogue, inspired by a range of genres and sonics from new wave and rock to electro and punk. Described by PITCHFORK as ‘perhaps the biggest rock band in France right now’, the group boast numerous gold records, won Victoires de la Musique (the French equivalent to the Grammy Awards), played well over 600 shows and supported Red Hot Chilli Peppers on their European tour in 2016. The band are renowned for their monumental live shows and are the last bastions of ‘real’ live music defining pure, unbridled, and hypnotic energy within their sets, without the use of computers or pre-recorded backing tracks.

In terms of music, the band burst on to the scene in 2013 with their Psycho Tropical Berlin album, reinterpreting cold wave with 1960’s surf guitars atop psychedelic music. Inspired heavily by the lives of Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, François Hardy and Jacno, follow up albums Mystère and Paradigmes blended a range of styles within one, dipping into the likes of soul, motown, breakbeat, slow-dance and electro. Merging different sounds and experiences together to cement the territory that is strictly La Femme’s; it can be certified that no one else is doing it like them.

With over 1.5M monthly listeners on Spotify and totalling well over 430M streams across their entire catalogue, La Femme have garnered a huge amount of tastemaker attention too, with coverage coming thick and fast across the likes of THE TIMES, ANOTHER MAGAZINE, i-D, DORK, THE LINES OF BEST FIT, THE DAILY STAR, DIY and GOD IS IN THE TV, with TEETH MAGAZINE describing their latest album, Paradigmes, as “transcending genre in a dadaist dimension”.

Backed by FJAAK’s new techno label CROWD, following placement across the Berlin duo’s BBC RADIO 1 ‘Essential Mix’, the four-track EP instantly distils the raw energy and sound of techno while holding grooves across hard housebreakbeat and acid. Punctuated with tribal kinetics and powerful, sample-driven elements, the culture clash of sound becomes warped by Luc’s deep understanding of musical subcultures to create a bigger, richer, more multi-layered tone from the offset.

Opening with the potent “I Don’t Get Down Like That”, UK-infused synths and rolling drum breaks set pace as the punchy sound waves quickly fuse into the title track “Do As You’re Told” – a certified club weapon with seismic low-end and choppy percussion perfect for any darkened rave setting.

Growing up in Florida, Luc’s artistry is a product of his ever-evolving creative environment. Studying and embracing subcultures while travelling around the world, Luc has been exposed to some of the most vibrant influences across music and community. From classic house and hip-hop in Chicago to London’s bubbling rave scene bridging jungle and UKG, the rising talent travelled to Colombia in the midst of the pandemic. The underground electronic space merging South American flavours massively shifted his creative palette and enabled him to explore a completely fresh sound before bringing his own immersive experience back to events across Berlin and Amsterdam.

An experienced DJ who’s previously supported the likes of DJ HeartstringDenham AudioRebekahBoraiSamurai Breaks and more, Luc earned serious stripes following his first official releases last year, catapulting his sound waves into the spotlight with significant playtime across BBC RADIO 1Boiler Room and the iconic Berghain. Moving into 2024, Luc entered this year with two single releases under Nastia’sNechto Records and AK Sports’ Club Madhouse – both heavy co-signs that have become a pillar of the electrifying legacy he’s building to achieve.

Lily Lane is a dark pop princess and alliterative artist hailing from the east coast and now taking over the west. A former Wilhelmina Curve model and outspoken advocate for body positivity, women and LGBTQ rights, this bicoastal, bisexual bombshell has been turning heads with everything she does.

Her latest single “Crisis” is inspired by the beginning of a relationship, the excitement of the unknown and the start of something new. The songwriter explains, “This song stems from a phrase I had written in my journal 6 months after a monumental breakup when I met my now fiance. “I’m in a crisis, but I kind of love it.” I had promised myself I’d be single for a year and just do exactly what I wanted to do and be selfish and all the things I felt like I hadn’t been doing in the relationship I was in for 5 years prior. Meeting my fiance really threw me into a crisis because all of a sudden the thing I wanted to do was be with them and that was contradictory to everything I thought I wanted.”

The intoxicating soul-infused, electro pop track shimmers brightly with a feel-good melody, dance-worthy beat and empowering lyrics that uplift the listener and inject them with a burst of energy. Lane shares, “The sounds of this song were inspired by Pride Month, the club and the feeling of dancing with your friends in the summer, sweaty and uninhibited.”

“Crisis” touches on the emotions of giving up power and being vulnerable and how it can be scary but beautiful at the same time. Capturing the feeling of butterflies, the track perfectly depicts the mix of excitement and nerves along with the infatuation you get for someone at the beginning of a potential new romance.

“Crisis” follows the release of Lane’s previous single “I Do,” both of which are from her new self-proclaimed “lovergirl era.” Lane shares, “The last song I released was really about the end of the courting stage, getting married, feeling safe and settled, this song is the exact opposite. It is about the beginning, the unknown and the thrill of it.”
Lane has had a lot of success in the sync space landing placements with the likes of Pretty Little Liars, Netflix and numerous makeup advertisements. Her music has been featured in numerous Spotify editorial playlists and garnered rave reviews from the likes of NYLON, Just Jared and Earmilk. She is a captivating performer and has rocked stages from a packed Madison Square Garden singing for the Knicks, opening for Big Time Rush, JoJo and Hot Chelle Rae at KIIS Concert at the Xfinity Center in Massachusetts, to an unforgettable set at West Hollywood Pride Festival opening for Jessie J and Madison Beer to a sold out headline show at the Peppermint Club in Los Angeles.

Originally writing the track (which serves as a reimagination of Rhye’s “3 Days,” off his seminal 2013 debut album Woman) as an edit to play at his Burning Man sets last year, Adam was frequently called upon by fans to find a way to release it. After getting Rhye on board, who enthusiastically approved of the new version, the track was cleared just in time for this year’s edition of Burning Man. The track returned to the playa as beloved as ever. You can check out clips of Adam playing the song during his return to Robot Heart at Burning Man this past week here

I made this edit around one year ago for my morning set at Robot Heart art car in Burning Man. I loved how the original makes you feel something deep. I remember the first time I heard it, and it brought tears to my eyes. I went to the studio on a mission to catch that feeling and transcend it to the dancefloor, to make people feel connected to themselves and their loved ones. The feedback has been amazing and people are always asking for it. We reached out to Rhye, and he loved it and approved the sample, so I’m very excited that ‘3 Days Later’ as we called it, is finally being officially released on Higher Ground!”     — Adam Ten

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Avery started playing piano at the age of 7 and writing her own vocal compositions just a year later. As she’s continued to come into her own as an artist, her soft, romantic vocals and raw piano stylings have remained the cornerstone of her sound. ANTHONY ORTIZ
“LUV U”

• “Music for me is a daily self-expression. The day that I made ‘LUV U,’ I was dealing with hardships in a relationship, but I felt the confidence to push through and put the effort in where it was needed. This experience is reflected in the song’s hook, ‘practicing my A E I love yous.’” — Anthony Ortiz

• This indie-pop love song was produced by the talented team of Dashawn White (Alec Benjamin, John Legend), Kevin Beggs (Lil Wayne, Tyga), and Marco Flores. The track is complemented with a music video from director Ben Allen (Rubi Rose, Desiigner).

• “LUV U” serves as the follow-up to July’s single “Too Good to be True,” marking another milestone for the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter. Fans can expect more new music this fall showcasing Ortiz’s singular pop sound.

MAISY KAY
“Love Is A God”

• Hot off her collaboration with Tiësto, Maisy Kay has released “Love Is A God,” the first single from her upcoming EP, Wonderlust: The Dusk. Produced by Mike Avenaim (Lil Nas X, Bebe Rexha, Hailee Steinfeld), the track details love’s profound, almost divine nature.

• “To me, love is an all-encompassing thing. The closest thing I can describe it as is a spiritual experience, a driving force that gives me purpose in life. This song is about the power of love and how my soul is driven to it, like a kind of deity. I wanted the big choral ending to capture that prayer-like experience.” — Maisy Kay

• Fans can catch Maisy Kay on tour this fall supporting Tori Kelly’s Purple Skies World Tour across North America.

Scottish singer-songwriter Theo Bleak is excited to share her second single of the year. Written and produced with bandmate Mark Johnston and collaborator Dan Gautreau (Ben Howard and Paulo Nutini), “In My House” is an examination of the feelings that bubble up once you’re left to your own devices within your own space. Being home alone can be a source of solace, but opens the door to rumination that only time with yourself brings. Displaying her ability to infuse levity into the most melancholy songs, “In My House” brings melody to the forefront, accompanied by airy acoustic guitar and swirling production.

LISTEN TO “IN MY HOUSE”

“’In My House’ is a lighter song about how much I love being alone,” Bleak says. “I felt so uncomfortable in January of this year, I just had a bad feeling. A really important friendship had broken down and I knew it was close to the end. I went into the studio and thought about escapism, the safety of my romanticized perception of life. Somewhere that their disdain of me couldn’t reach. I love astrology and thought about all the traits of being an Aquarius, and leaned into the solitary aspect. ‘In My House’ is about the person I actually am, shielded from even the worst interpretations of my personality.”
