INsiders Guide: QUEER|ART, The FMs, Billie Zizi, Tragic Sasha, Wynona Bleach, Ronny Tibbs, SOULKEEPER…

Queer|Art, New York City’s home for the creative and professional development of LGBTQ+ artists, is pleased to announce the 2024 winners and finalists for two annual grants: the Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists, and the Robert Giard Grant for Emerging LGBTQ+ Artists. In recognition of their conceptual achievements, technical execution, and rigorous commitment to queer storytelling, Brooklyn-based filmmaker Nyala Moon has been awarded the Illuminations Grant, and Iowa City-based collaborative duo riel & Bianca Sturchio have been awarded the Robert Giard Grant. As this year’s honorees, Moon and the Sturchios will each receive a $10,000 cash grant and professional development support to elevate their practices.

Developed and named in partnership with Mariette Pathy Allen, Aaryn Lang, and Serena Jara, the Illuminations Grant draws attention to an existing body of work, sheds light on the under-recognized contributions of Black trans women visual artists, and provides critical support to their continuing work. For its fifth year, this national grant was juried by Tourmaline, M Lamar, and jaamil olawale kosoko.

The Robert Giard Grant for Emerging LGBTQ+ Photographers supports and promotes self-taught, early career or otherwise emerging LGBTQ+ artists. The international grant was organized in partnership with The Robert Giard Foundation from 2020–2022 when the Foundation ceased operations. This year’s grant was generously funded by Joan Cadden, Glenn Stancroff, and the Robert Giard Foundation, and was judged by Jess T. Dugan, Sarah Burke, Tommy Kha, and Jacqueline Francis. After five years, 2024 will be Queer|Art’s final year hosting the Robert Giard Grant. Speaking to Moon’s winning body of work, 2024 Illuminations Grant Judge jaamil olawale kosoko writes: “Nyala Moon is an extraordinary artist whose work leaves a lasting impression, inviting sustained engagement and deep reflection. Her unique brand of humor, fresh and macabre, rises from personal trauma, creating a dynamic tension that captivates and challenges the viewer. With impeccable timing and technically sound filmmaking, Nyala masterfully explores YouTube culture as a cinematic language, weaving it into a storytelling style that feels both novel and immediate. Her voice is one that demands to be seen and heard, and her stories deserve to reach a wider audience.”

On the Sturchio’s winning photographic project, 2024 Robert Giard Grant judge Jess T. Dugan remarks: “I was very moved by Bianca and riel Sturchio’s series ‘before the last lilac blooms.’ Their collaborative project is sensitive, formally rigorous, and socially important. It was energizing to see a body of work engaging with queerness, family, and ability/disability, tenderly made from the lived experiences of the artists. I’m excited to watch as this project continues to evolve and make its way into the world.”

For the 2024 Illuminations Grant, four artists were acknowledged as distinguished finalists: Fatima Jamal, Steven Anthony Johnson II, Marcelline Mandeng Nken, and Ari Moore. For the 2024 Robert Giard Grant, two photographers were acknowledged as distinguished finalists: Su Cassiano and Andina Marie Osorio. Each of the six finalists will receive a cash prize of $1,250, bringing this year’s grand total of awarded funds to $27,500.

The FMs will release 51122 on November 22. Produced by the legendary David Werner and inspired by lo-fi dream pop, classic new wave and synthpunk, the album follows PINK + BLACK, their sophomore record released earlier this year to acclaim from NY Daily News, MetroWeekly, GLAAD, Mundane MagazineNew Noise Magazine, and beyond. 51122 corresponds with May 11, 2022 – the day that Frankie Rex, founding member of The FMs, passed away from a fentanyl overdose.

Of “Future Pope,” out today, Matte Namer shares: “We have been accelerating to this moment of political panic in 2024, and The FMs are releasing ‘Future Pope,’ a prophetic dance-march beaming cybernetic synths, and funk-punk guitars. Conceptually dizzying yet socially relevant, we journey forward to a tyrant able to tap into the same rage mania of the Trump era but used with much more Machiavellian effectiveness – potentially an even darker moment, yet with still with hope brought forth by the subversive gender outlaws hacking the paradigm.”

Of “A Means to an End” (Joy Division cover), they share: “Frankie and I were for years tossing around doing a cover song but could never agree on the right one. We’ve always been into Joy Division and actually covered ‘She’s Lost Control’ in our first band. One day I asked Frankie what their favorite Joy Division song was and he said ‘A Means to an End’ and I was like, let’s just do that. I went off the rails on this synth & digi drums-only arrangement trying to harness the chaotic unexpected nature of JD. Frankie did this mind-blowing performance, maybe my favorite thing we’ve ever recorded of their voice in three takes. Our producer for 51112, David Werner, then took our demos, simplified them a bit in a way and put his own spin on a few things that ultimately elevated the recording quite significantly.”

Of 51122, she notes: “I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud and excited for an album release. There’s an identity and flow to these ten songs that feel like our most developed work thus far. We got to work with David Werner who understood our music and energy and how to elevate it and direct it. It’s also a bit somber being the last music that I think will ever be released with Frankie’s incredible, powerful, unique voice. I think there’s something about that that makes me remember they are really gone, like an orchid blooming from a coffin nail. 51122 is the date Frankie passed away, but is also a type of symbol in a way, or perhaps a word. I’m not sure what that meaning is yet, perhaps the orchid needs to grow.”

The FMs will celebrate the release of 51122 on November 23 with a record release show at NYC’s Berlin (25 Avenue A). Tickets are available now.

Combining the tasteful grooves of classic soul with the flair of contemporary R&B, Billie Zizi effortlessly binds avant-garde jazz subtlety to her guitar-driven melodies, creating a sound as approachable as it is experimental. Effusive and thoughtful, without pretence while still above board, she carves a distinct path marked by sonic abandon and a wild spirit. Now on her third studio album, she continues to prove herself as an exciting emergent voice in modern music.

Having accompanied her father on a number of European trips immersed in traditions of wandering Romani bands through the continental countryside, Zizi took these formative experiences and set out to make statements on her own as a songwriter. Her early work as a solo artist included tightly arranged looped and sampled parts, building pieces live and in the moment. She added a rhythm section in preparation for her first LP, ‘Gun Metal Dress’ (2015), a jazz-influenced collection that featured unconventional time signature shifts, straightforward yet studied guitar work, and classic, scat-inspired vocal performances. Her sophomore effort, ‘Moon Of Honey’ (2016), showed a growing artist comfortable with taking risks, still maintaining a sharp pop sensibility in composition. Venturing into textural guitar parts that never strayed far from her intrinsic understanding of melody has been a trademark for Zizi’s growing confidence as an original artist.

After a brief hiatus from her solo career, JBZZ returns triumphantly with her most adventurous effort to date. Bolstered by her hard-earned original sound, ‘Levitate’ (2024) draws new maps through familiar terrain with lush and stunning results. Fans of musical alchemists akin to Khrangbin or Glass Animals can expect melodic charms rife throughout the ten track run time. Newcomers will be drawn in by her tender, innovative approach to this project, decorated beautifully with Austin Parachoniak’s keen production sense. The album dances gently through illusions of kaleidoscopic colour with Zizi’s masterful vocal prowess in full bloom. On tracks like ‘Midnight Sun’ and ‘Hope’, listeners are treated to decorative and unpredictable cadences, creating an airy atmosphere that feels ethereal and whimsical all at once. Her poetic chops are on full display on ‘Everything in Between’ and ‘Levitate’, sparing no detail for all lucky enough to be on the journey. Although separated by genre, these tunes rely on vivid imagery and thoughtful descriptive turns – think Gillian Welch writing for BADBADNOTGOOD. Sparing no detail, the small-but-mighty crack studio band delivers some tasty mid-tempo pop-rockers, ‘May You Dance’ is among the top contender, wrapping up the album’s run time with more of the beautiful nostalgia rife throughout.

Not merely content with artistic repetition, Zizi continues to prioritize growth and play above the safe and comfortable. Her dedication to the craft is undeniable and magnetic for long-time listeners and new fans alike. This spirited, fresh approach to ‘Levitate’ is a welcome sound unlike much else, and a true joy to bear witness to.

“May your joy be unmuted, hope undefeated, may you dance in ecstasy.”

Rising alt-pop artist and producer Tragic Sasha returns with her brand-new single, ‘Are You Impressed Yet?’, a fun, infectious track that continues her streak of genre-blending releases. Known for her ability to fuse pop with electronic distortion and an alternative edge, Sasha’s latest single is a striking example of her signature sound, reminiscent of the production style of The Japanese House.

Blending alternative rock, shoegaze, and power pop, Wynona Bleach are a fierce and feisty four-piece band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 2021, they signed with the iconic indie label fierce panda (known for Coldplay, Placebo, and Death Cab For Cutie). Early 2022 saw the release of their debut album, “Moonsoake,” a vibrant and passionately charged collection that delves into themes of heartache and emotional turmoil. The band is now set to release “I Deserve That,” the second single from their upcoming, yet-to-be-titled sophomore album on 7th October 2024.

Formed in 2018 as “R51,” Wynona Bleach has achieved a helluva lot, including performances at Reading & Leeds Festival, a 12-date headline tour of Russia, and supporting acts like Feeder. They were nominated for the Northern Ireland Music Prize for both Album and Live Act in 2022, and their winter tour ended with two shows at the Other Voices Festival.Debut album “Moonsoake” was recorded after Wynona Bleach supported rock legends Alice in Chains on their sold-out 2019 Irish tour. Produced with Bill Ryder-Jones in a Portuguese factory, no less, the album features tracks mixed by Grammy-nominated Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh. 2023, saw band playing live sessions on BBC Sounds, performing at SXSW and New Colossus Festivals in the USA, and supporting fellow Belfast band and absolute Indie rock legends Ash on their UK and European tour. Now, it is 2024, the band are puting the finishing touches to the next album – (details coming soon!) – and will hit the road on tour this October’24.“I Deserve That,” is a cautionary tale about the cultural bin fire that exists around the chronically online and how important it is to touch base with the ‘real’ and natural world. Guitarist Jonny Woods says: “it’s a track about brain rot and how social media and tv can be poisonous and make you feel worthless and bad about yourself, and how you should go outside, and touch grass every once in a while.” Amen to that. We can see the damage and fall out this ‘disease’ has caused all around us, every day.

To underscore this sentiment, the upcoming video will be taking a hard swipe at how YouTube and podcast culture can warp young people into political and religious extremism when, really, they should go outside with real friends, meet new people and have real, personal connections, as opposed to virtual ones. I mean, let’s breathe, be real, have genuine discourse! Ditch the BS!Wynona Bleach deliver glorious sounds of indie alternative rock, echoing vibes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Curve, The Joy Formidable, and Wolf Alice, but with their own unique twist. If “I Deserve That” is any clue to the music on the forthcoming album, then get ready for a blend of loud, raucous energy, unmistakably bold hooks, lush melodies and all the sass and ‘bubblegrunge’ beauty you can possibly handle! On top of that this band totally rock the world off its axis at their gigs. Go on! Do yourself a favour and go see them at a venue near you…..

Detroit, Michigan-based indie singer-songwriter Ronny Tibbs shares elusive, driving track and rousing animated video “What You Do” out now. Tibbs’ haunting, intricate EP Shorthand, is due out October 29 and available for pre-order now.

The building, explosive “What You Do” has become a staple in the Ronny Tibbs live shows, and stands out from the forthcoming project as its bridge takes a raucous, psychedelic twist. Its subject matter similarly displays a new side of Tibbs. The artist invites listeners to bring their own perspectives to the music. “While it’s personal in some ways, it also touches on political and social perspectives. When writing about these topics, I always strive to pose an opinion without pushing an agenda. To each their own—this is just an observation from my point of view. It’s cool if people see something that aligns with them in the track; if not, carry on.”

For its accompanying video, Tibbs recruited two animators, Martina Sic and Taylor Stanislawski, who brought the music to life and together, all let their imaginations run, without any creative restraints. Plus, Tibbs continues, To add a unique layer traditionally reserved for performance aspects, I enlisted America’s Got Talent winner Ace ‘Shadow’ Phillips, who masterfully performed all the shadow puppet sections. This film was one of my most complex projects, primarily because animation offers boundless creative freedom.”

Minnesota band SOULKEEPER have announced their signing to Pure Noise Records. To celebrate the announcement the band will be releasing a reissue of their debut album ‘Holy Design’, which was first self-released in May 2023.

Speaking about the reissue guitarist (and primary songwriter) Scott Gilmore said, “I’m very excited about it because we all put a ton of effort into the process of making it. I’m not saying I don’t think it got enough recognition, because I’m definitely grateful for how well it did, but we can only go so far by ourselves. So I’m glad it’ll get heard by a new audience. I think if people hear it and they’re familiar with the subgenre, they’re going to be a fan. We’re very excited for it to reach people it wouldn’t normally reach.”

Brooklyn-based musical multihyphenate Harrison Lipton releases his smooth, effortlessly sultry single “Synchronized Swimming.” Exploring romance coyly nestled within the metaphor of synchronized swimming, listeners witness Lipton’s proven songwriting and production talent in raw form. Complete with dusty piano, laid-back Khruangbin-like drums, and an underwater guitar solo, the final touch is the perfect pairing of background vocals from MICHELLE’s Layla Kuriloff — Stream

Lipton’s vivid storytelling crafts a tale of a languid summer romance, while the buttery, self-produced concoction of 70s soft rock, indie, soul and R&B perfectly support his unique vocal dexterity as he sings the track’s hook in his silky, airy falsetto. “It happens when you close your eyes / then you start to recognize / you and I were synchronized swimming.” Joined by close collaborator Ian Bakerman of Phony Ppl, the two engineered the track, and much of the upcoming music, between their two studios.

On the inspiration behind “Synchronized Swimming,” Lipton explains, “This song has been in the works for six years. I’ve tried finishing it so many times, but it was going back to the thesis of the song –– the tenderness of two lovers falling in sync with each other –– that helped me figure out how to make the rest of the song feel like that one indelible moment.”

emerging Liverpool based alt-rock singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Esme Bridie shares her brand new single ‘Propranolol’, the first taste of her upcoming EP. Building on her growing reputation for seamlessly combining reflective lyricism with bold instrumentals, Esme’s latest offering delves into her personal relationship with anxiety medication, bringing a refreshing level of honesty to the alt-rock scene.

London and Tel Aviv-based artist, Nadav Sivan is proud to share both the official promo video, plus a live performance video shot at The Camden Club in London, for his vibey single “U So Hot”. The track is taken from his debut album, “Til The Day We Die” (out now) and has been famously featured on a key fashion catwalk episode of The Kardashians!  For a fashion (andKardashians!) lover like Nadav this was simply the biggest honour that could be bestowed on him.

Nadav Sivan is all things at oncea singer, songwriter, producer, performerand is – without question – a star on the rise: think flamboyant, colourful, and absurdly talented with a kind of confident ‘peacock swagger’ a star in waiting should have!  His early introduction to music, surprisingly perhaps, came via music therapy. He was partially deaf until the age of four, after which he underwent a major operation to repair his hearing. Following the surgery, his parents bought him a piano, and there was no turning back! He became a top classically trained pianist, playing and competing throughout his childhood and teens.

Latest single “U So Hot” is taken from Nadav’s debut album released August 2023 – “Til the Day We Die” – and is a major part of his live set where he lights up the stage with his dynamic and exuberant signature dance moves. The track is cool and uber fashion conscious and found its way to being used in aprominent scene in an episode of the Kardashians latest series. This is a track which oozes the charming swagger that Nadav is known for and is accompanied by a great video featuring the band with dancers in their eighties, still able make some moves! The video is so noteworthy that it’s being featured and celebrated at several film festivals including Philadelphia and Amsterdam Lift Off.  When performing the track onstage, Nadav absolutely gets the party started!

“U So Hot” also celebrates individual allure and charisma beyond conventional standards of beauty and wealth. The song challenges superficial attractions like muscles, luxury brands, and physical attributes, emphasizing that true magnetism comes from authenticity, intellect, and genuine intention. The chorus repeatedly underscores the irresistible appeal of someone who is confident and genuine, hitting the listener “like a shot.” It also highlights inclusivity, stating that gender doesn’t matter when it comes to who can be captivating. This chimes in with Nadav’s deep support for the LGBTQI community of which he is a member.

Kirsty Grant reveals her brand new single ‘4 On The Floor’ completing her impressive sophomore EP.

& the EP in full HERE

Pulling from her life experiences, 4 On The Floor is the product of a challenging time. Representing her ability to spin a bad experience on its head, the result is an intoxicating dance-floor anthem, ready to be adored. Sharing more Kirsty explained: Music can act as an escape and as a form of therapy. I want listeners to listen to it and just feel good, with whatever is happening in their lives, I want them to listen and just want to dance. I want them to picture feeling free and singing along, feeling every hit and using it as “a lifeline to dance to”.

A big believer of escapism through music, Kirsty Grant’s new EP channels the importance of letting off steam and living in the moment. Inspired by the wonderful world of 2000’s pop, she fuses her own signature twist with gritty synths and unforgettable lyricism, resulting in a stand out sound that continues to turn heads.

With 4 On The Floor the last track on the EP to be revealed, it completes a body of work that is ready and waiting to soundtrack future moments of euphoria. Sharing more, she explained: This body of work truly represents me as an artist, and I know that if my younger self could listen to it, she would think I’m the pop star she dreamed of becoming. It shows me who I can be, and it makes me so excited to see how I continue to grow as an artist.

The release of 4 On The Floor follows, Jupiter which arrived as a triumphant new, unapologetic pop anthem back in July. Breaking free from insecurity, it well and truly saw Kirsty Grant in her element. Sharing a little more behind the track, she explained: ‘I wanted a song that could manifest the confidence that I had always dreamed to have, with no self-doubt and imposter syndrome, but just feeling like a star with no limits.

Enigmatic artist 1788-L has teamed up with Seattle-based producer/DJ Quackson for a new collaboration ‘WARTYPE’ out now via HypnoVizion

A ferocious force from start to finish, ‘WARTYPE’ is an electrifying kickoff to 1788-L’s new era. ‘WARTYPE’ sees 1788-L continue to experiment with intense and complex sound design alongside HypnoVizion alum Quackson. Thunderous builds offset cataclysmic drops as ‘WARTYPE’’s intensity heightens with each twist and turn. Complementary to both 1788-L and Quackson’s mischievous midtempo styles, ‘WARTYPE’ is a monstrous heater ready to be unleashed on dancefloors far and wide.

“A collaborative effort with Quackson more than a year ago, this tune transformed many times. Recently bringing the project to the finish line together, we are stoked with the final cut you hear today. The intense, foreboding brass sounds of the intro set the tone for the whole body of work to come!” – 1788-L

“I’m extremely stoked to have worked with 1788-L on this monster of a tune. ‘WARTYPE’ will be my set opener for a lot of shows moving forward, and I’m guessing it’ll be a fan favorite.“ – Quackson

Like the tides of the Bay of Fundy on which she was raised, or the steadfast city line that broods along its port, Kylie Fox has been devoted to honing her craft as a songwriter for as long as she can remember. Growing up with a Mother who would sing to her, and a Father who sat at the helm of every kitchen party with his Yamaha and uninhibited voice, it became clear to Fox from a young age that music was how to show love, how to express identity, and how to connect with the people around her. Kylie’s career in music has led her to share stages alongside names like Bahamas, The Strumbellas and Joel Plaskett. She has showcased at the East Coast Music Awards (2021), Folk Alliance International (2021) and the Canadian Song Conference (2021). In 2020, she participated in the Banff Centre for the Arts International Songwriting Residency and has also been featured on lineups for festivals like the Cavendish Beach Music Festival (2022) and Area506 (2021). She was named “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” at the 2020 PrixNB Awards, and recently named “Innovator of the Year” at the 2023 PrixNB Awards.

Having recognized Fox’s creativity as a child, her Mother enrolled her in the Interaction School of Performing Arts in Saint John, New Brunswick. She found a home on the stage and developed a passion for acting that led her to study theater at Concordia University in Montreal, and a love of singing that led her to study opera at Mount Allison University in small town Sackville, New Brunswick. It was in university that Fox started sharing the songs that had filled her journals, performing at open mics, coffee houses, and to a group of friends who’d compare songs in their dorms. She spent her Summers working as a tree planter in British Columbia, strumming her guitar around backwoods campfires, swimming in endless lakes, and developing a fortitude for hard work.

That resilience transpired in her many jobs serving tables and fundraising to record her songs. She released her first EP BalconyEP in 2017 and toured it as a three piece band called “Kylie Fox and the Hound”. After university, she toured the East and West Coast of Canada as a solo artist, all the while documenting her experiences through song. In the chaos of 2020, she released her first full length album, (Green, 2020), found home in an arty new city, formed her band, and started carving out a career in music full time. She has acted as the music director for the Theatre New Brunswick Theatre School, composer for Solo Chicken Theatre Company’s developing works, and voice teacher in her home studio. She recently utilized her theater training and starred as Dolly Parton in two sold out performances of the Once Upon a Christmas Tribute show.

This year, Kylie has partnered with manager Joe Bamford (The Kings, Glass Tiger, The Headstones and Leslie Spit Treeo) and is gearing up for a busy 2024. She has performed at the Fredericton Playhouse and the New Brunswick Casino this Spring, opening for Matt Minglewood. She performed on the main stage of Paddlefest, and is about to debut at Dooryard Arts Festival, and Harvest Music Festival and represent New Brunswick on an eight-date tour of the East Coast Songwriter Circle. She is currently preparing to release her second studio album, Sequoia, that was made with the support of ArtsNB, Music New Brunswick and Canada Council for the Arts. Sequoia has come to life as an eleven track album, developed with her band and six-time ECMA-winning producer, Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant, Fortunate Ones, The Good Lovelies).

West London’s rising musical maverick, Hope Tala, is back with her latest single ‘Shiver’, a sweet-sounding track that perfectly captures the emotional duality of falling in love – the combined fear and excitement of it all. Following the sell-out of her upcoming headline show at London’s O2 Academy Islington on October 17th, Hope is set to continue her incredible momentum with this release.

After announcing a performance at the Olympia on November 20, 2025, the artist behind the diamond-certified single ‘Shining Light’ (over 50M streams) is back with “TAKING MY DISTANCE,” a powerful track that intertwines rebellion and independence. Known for his bold and inventive DIY approach, Aime Simone marks a new chapter in his artistic journey with this release.

“TAKING MY DISTANCE” resonates like a siren. The track, driven by frantic percussion, blends reimagined rock energy with trap rhythms and the pulse of an 808, creating an intense and aggressive dynamic. The absence of guitars, unusual for the artist, reflects a desire to explore new sonic horizons, particularly through minimalist yet powerful synthesizers, inspired by punk, witch house, and EDM influences.

The song’s lyrics tackle the theme of breaking free from a toxic environment and staying true to one’s convictions, talking on the track Aime explains: “I wanted to express a desire for freedom and self-assertion. Taking My Distance is about taking control of your life through personal expression.”

The single’s cover art, created by Argentine artist 3rd World Elite, captures the rebellious spirit of the track. The contrasts of red and black depict Aime in motion, symbolizing both the rejection of constraints and artistic transformation.

The music video, co-directed by his creative and life partner Sonja Fix and director Vitalii Akimov (Kanye West, Eartheater), presents a striking visual universe, blending CGI, artificial intelligence, and real-life imagery. Inspired by Gustave Doré’s

engravings for Paradise Lost, the cult film The Wall by Pink Floyd, and the expressionist classic Metropolis, the video tells the story of an angelic figure navigating a futuristic world dominated by machines. This blend of references and styles offers a visual journey as innovative as it is surreal.

Aime Simone will be performing at a sold-out concert at the Trianon on December 14, where he will perform tracks from his latest album Oh Glory (2023) along with some unreleased songs. With the release of “TAKING MY DISTANCE” 2024 looks set to be another stand out year for Aime Simone.

With the release of his second single “Turn Back”, London-via-Finland artist OH? is joined by newcomer Elsie as he continues to enrapture us along his musical journey.

Deeply emotive strumming guitar chords lay the perfect foundation for OH? and Elsie’s heartfelt and raw vocals, as they sing “you say it’s time to turn back, but if time could turn back, yeah then time would turn its back on those who carry on with life.”, contemplating the meaning of time in this fast-paced world. The pairs perfectly pitched harmonies effortlessly move in unison oozing vulnerability and warmth. With his signature rolling synths and intertwining sprinklings of glistening keys, OH? continues to prove his talents with this poignant and heart-rending offering.

Speaking on the track Elsie tells us: “Time is something we’re bound to be acutely aware of on a day-to-day basis, and a force felt in all our lives. Time can take us away from places, and further from our memories. We often have less of it than we’d like to think, and how difficult it can be to stay in the present moment!”

Affirming Elsie’s thoughts OH? adds: “Time is constantly moving forward, it compels you to grow, it doesn’t discriminate. Turn back aims to take a constructive approach towards the great equalizer. You know, time is something we really can’t control, rather it controls us – yet we try so, so hard. No matter how much we want something to be as it used to, staying comfortably in nostalgia, or in our hopes for the future, if we try to do that, we just get stuck in the moment and everything starts to feel strange. Even

when we experience a great loss, we can’t stop traveling into the future with all our emotions, fears, hopes and our dreams, and there’s little more we can do than to try and find some peace in the present moment.”

Nashville-based indie alt-pop group Moody Joody share a hopeful, cathartic anthem “Ground Control,” out today with its accompanying music video. Encouraging and radiant, the latest release aims to avoid burnout and find joy in the mundane. Plus, celebrate the new music live with Moody Joody at their hometown show on November 8, at Nashville’s Row 1.

Next month, Moody Joody will join alt pop/rock group MisterWives on the MisterWives: Just For One Night! tour on select dates. Tickets are on sale now here and see a full list of dates below.

After hitting rock bottom, the only place to go is up. Over a catchy melody and playful rhyme schemes, “Ground Control” sees Moody Joody attempt to quiet the noise and avoid getting lost in the days where life feels cyclical and dull. Written in New York City with frequent collaborator Scott Harris (Shawn Mendes, Dua Lipa), the track is a shiny reminder to take risks, set high goals and to look ahead–beyond the immediate future.

After bouncing ideas back and forth and finding its direction, vocalist Kayla Hall shares, Somewhere along the line it turned into an upbeat anthem about being burned out from the monotony of working side jobs, stuck in a loop of dissociation and being dissatisfied with your current circumstances.” Vocalist Kaitie Forbes adds, “What’s more therapeutic than writing a rock bottom banger?! ‘Ground Control’ is for anyone who has hit their wits end in whatever artistry they are pursuing.”

The track’s accompanying video, directed by Gavin Hurlburt, was a collaborative, heartfelt project that the group is thrilled to see come to life. On the video’s central theme, Hurlburt shares, “The concept for the music video centers around the theme of existentialism. We all have had to work jobs we hated, and do menial tasks. The video explores the ways we escape–or deal with–reality and dream of a better life for ourselves.”

Doe Boy is known for his penchant for grizzly street anthems and subtle trap melodies, and he’s allowed his affinity for both to drive the sound of “Special,” an anthem that pays homage to the ladies. The song was first previewed on Doe Boy’s TikTok, where it riled up his audience anticipation of the song’s eventual release.

Doe Boy began the year with considerable momentum that continues with the release of “Special.” Shortly following the release of his latest full-length project, last year’s BeezyDoe’s “Way Too Long” single was synced into a widely popular Apple Music iPhone 15 promo, a lofty commercial placement for an artist at any level. (The commercial has surpassed five million views.) Since then, he’s teased fans with street singles like “Say It To My Face” and “Huh,” which have generated significant buzz.  “Special” arrivals ahead of a new project from Doe Boy, coming soon.

The witching hour is upon us as Ukrainian-born, Los Angeles-based singer, rapper, and songwriter Alina Pash has joined forces with Irish-born alt disruptor Bambie Thug (they/them/fae) for a captivating new version of latest single “Bad Witch.” The powerful pair of enchantresses take a similar approach to their genre-smashing and shapeshifting sound, letting their unconventional but fierce style reign free and summon listeners into their thrilling world. The collaborative offering is no exception as they blend their alchemy of influences and make it clear that there’s a new coven in town.

In the realm of alt-pop, Piper Connolly emerges as a fierce innovator, her music a vibrant mélange of introspection and sonic exploration. Hailing from the arid deserts of Phoenix, Arizona, Piper’s journey began with a passion for the unconventional and a determination to forge her own path.

Comparisons to industry icons like Avril Lavigne and Paramore underscore the appeal of Piper’s sound. With her “unique voice cutting through the noise of today’s ‘lazy whisper range’ popular music scene”, Piper emerges as a standout new artist that seamlessly blends elements of rock and pop, new and old, inviting listeners on an enjoyable musical tumble.

From a very young age, Piper found solace and expression in songwriting, her compositions reflecting the raw emotions of life’s complexities and newfound experiences. Drawing inspiration from all manner of music, from early rock and roll, and jazz, to 90s grunge and ska with a steady undercurrent of R&B and soul, she’s worked to hone a sound that defies blunt categorization, blending elements of indie songwriting, alternative and pop into a storied sonic landscape.

Her single, “kiss like me” is an irresistible and cheeky rebuttal to a crush the artist had. She shares, “It is the ultimate “the grass is greener on THIS side” song. It’s fun and flirty and we wrote it as a fusion of old and new- it features asolid homage to Billy Idol, whom I love, & a modern nod to Olivia Rodrigo.

The song “welcome back girl” is an emotive and important track. She confides, “I wrote the song after seeing a friend rediscover herself after a very difficult time. She had completely lost herself as a result of a really bad relationship which included intimate partner violence. This beautiful, strong, effervescent personality had become unrecognizable as the person we all love so much. She left them which, in and of itself, was very hard for her to do and, with time, came healing and that familiar lovely woman came back to us and back to herself. She is now the ‘welcome back girl’ in my song.”

Onstage, Piper commands attention with a magnetic presence and an infectious energy honed over years of live performance. From intimate club settings to expansive festival stages, she captivates audiences with her dynamic performances.

Beyond her music, Piper is a vocal advocate for authenticity and self-expression, using her platform to champion individuality and empowerment. As she explores the boundaries of alt-pop, she continues to inspire others to embrace their true selves through her music and activism, serving as a beacon of creativity and authenticity in a world hungry for genuine voices and connection.

In life, we find that the beauty of connection is often shadowed by the pain of loss, and the enduring nature of love is contrasted by the fleeting moments of existence. This duality—the interplay of light and darkness—is at the heart of Sexy Mathematics. Originally formed in 2009, the band began as a synth rock group known for their intense, emotive soundscapes. Over time, their music has evolved, mirroring the complexity of the world around them and their own growth as artists.

Sexy Mathematics’ journey started in Saskatoon with the release of their Integration EP, followed by their debut full-length album, Future Nights, in 2011. This period marked their transition to Toronto, where they recorded their sophomore album, Electronics, in 2014. The path to their latest self-titled album, Sexy Mathematics, was not straightforward. The band faced delays and challenges, including the global COVID-19 pandemic, but these obstacles only deepened their resolve to refine their sound and vision.

Their upcoming album, Sexy Mathematics, is a testament to their evolution. It delves into themes of personal relationships, loneliness, despair, existential crises, and the anxiety about an uncertain future. This record represents a significant leap for the band, who decided to hire producer Stephen Krecklo and mixer Jordon Zadorozny to elevate their music to new heights. The result is a compelling blend of their rock foundations and modern digital synthesizers, creating a rich, atmospheric sound that is both intricate and powerful.

Chris Daviduik (guitar, vocals, songwriting) and Matt Aggus (drums) have forged a unique musical bond over the years. Their influences—ranging from The Cure to Health—infuse their music with a nostalgic yet innovative edge. The album’s production, enhanced by the expertise of Krecklo and Zadorozny, allows Sexy Mathematics to explore new sonic territories, transforming their raw, indie pop-leaning sound into a mature, textured soundscape.

The opening track of Sexy Mathematics sets the tone with its dynamic layers of dissonance and crescendoing waves of noise, reflecting the band’s journey through stasis and transformation. The album continues to build on this foundation, with each track offering a deeper exploration of their thematic concerns and musical ambitions. The addition of guest musicians Ashley Jane and Gregory Macdonald, who provided vocal harmonies, further enriches the album’s sound, showcasing the band’s willingness to push boundaries and embrace new influences.

Despite the challenges and changes, Sexy Mathematics remains true to their roots. Their music is a reflection of their personal and collective experiences, a testament to their enduring connection as a band. For listeners who believe in the transformative power of music, Sexy Mathematics offers a profound, immersive experience—a record that demands repeated listening to fully appreciate its depth and nuance.

As Sexy Mathematics prepares to release their self-titled album, they invite listeners to join them on this journey. Their music, with its blend of raw emotion and sonic sophistication, captures the essence of what it means to navigate the complexities of life and art. This album is not just a collection of songs; it’s a statement of intent, a reflection of their past, and a glimpse into their future.

As an up-and-coming indie artist, bennytheghost has made some incredible strides as a writer, musician, and performer. He’s toured with large indie artists like his long-term partner KiNG MALA, Upsahl, Tiffany Day, Hippo Campus, Remi Wolf, Still Woozy, Sam Austins, and Duckworth. In addition to being featured on Elton John’s Rocket Hour and Zane Lowe’s radio shows, Benny has been on Spotify editorials including New Music Friday, anti pop, indie pop, today’s indie rock, and my life is a movie, amongst others.  Originally finding comfort in the indie pop sound, bennytheghost’s branding is taking a darker, edgier direction with a sound better categorized in dark pop, indie rock.

The benny world has morphed to a dark, depressed, A24 horror movie vibe, but acknowledges that we move through the chaos through humor, some self-deprecation, and some healthy absurdism. His world is derived from an initial sense of heartbreak: relationships gone toxic, loneliness, hedonism, hyper-romanticizing bad situations, the evil-animalistic-selfish woes of capitalism, social anxiety, and greedy human desires. In dealing with these dark and uncomfortable themes, benny loves using self-deprecating sarcasm. These themes manifest in benny’s soundscapes, lyrics, fashion, and overall image of his world.

“ANIMAL” is the first major single that marks this shift and new era of bennytheghost.  In collaboration with renowned indie artist KiNG MALA, bennytheghost infuses lyricism that comments on the state of the world – one of which the youth are given to inherit. This single sonically represents this new world that has slowly been molded into the most profit-based, evil, capitalist nightmare and calls out society for its inhumane hunger for money when Benny, at the end of the chorus says, “You crave sophistication but you’re just an animal”.  Benny draws inspiration from the Gorillaz and JOJI in crafting this new realm.

“I take massive inspiration from JOJI who’s songs are also incredibly dramatic and heartbreaking, while his character is so goofy, aloof, mysterious and funny. A dichotomy that houses those two opposites is so compelling to me; that’s where I want to live.”

With the support and distribution of Good Boy Records, this single establishes benny as a major player in the indie space.

Jane Doe is not your average band – not by a long shot. With an authentic sound woven from the milieu of rock and roll, the West Coast based Jane Doe is fronted by a defiant, opinionated but incredibly smart and compassionate woman, singing, screaming and messaging an entire generation of whom she’s connected to. Jane Doe’s National (US/CDN) campaign launched along with their debut album “Identified”, January 2019 and was mastered by none other than the legendary Howie Weinberg. With tunes like the brutally honest ‘Final Line’, epic throwbacks and homage tracks like ‘This is a Rock Song’, as well as the empowering ‘Scab’ and haunting ‘Scar Territory’, Jane Doe’s music has become part of a new multi-generational soundtrack.

Their sophomore album Found marks a new musical chapter for the band. Single “Dig a Grave” is a face-melting grunge rock anthem celebrating the dirty moodiness of the era.  The song is shared alongside a cinematic music video. Helmed by an experience-meets-innovation father-daughter duo, the visual is heavily inspired by Stanley Kubrick with its vibrant visuals, dark thematic undertones and sardonic bite.

Then there is “Atlas”, which features rolling drums, dynamic power chords, and deeply intense evocative vocals that fuse together for a vortex of magnetic ferocity. Frontwoman Izzy Kay adds, the song is “inspired by the music that came before us, laced with sarcastic lyrics, and ever-dedicated to carry the torch of rock n’ roll.”

Above all else, Jane Doe is the generation that doesn’t fit a specific mold. Jane Doe is a square peg in a round hole. Jane Doe is the wave of people who identify with the past but shape the future.
