INsiders Guide: 36?, Animal Scream, Applesauce Tears, Andrea Vallé, Mally & Last Word…

36? is an award-winning multifaceted psych-pop art rock band based out of Calgary, AB. Driving the band’s magnetic force is the multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Taylor Cochrane, who’s intense commitment to authenticity shines through on each track. Crafting sincere, unapologetic, and intricate music that cuts no corners, the unit’s live performances are stimulating exhibits of energy that are bound to captivate anyone who bears witness. Because of their unique style sonically and visually, 36? has shared stages with The AtarisWavvesHelado Negro, and various others.

Hailing from the steel capital of the world (Pittsburgh, PA), Animal Scream is a duo consisting of Chad Monticue and Josh Sickels. Creating cinematic, yet otherworldly sounds in the vein of psych-pop psychedelia, the band are heavily influenced by greats such as Radiohead and Beach House. Decadently mixing supernatural and sci-fi elements with more straightforward pop tones, the duo creates earworms that are tender and ominous, yet also emotionally devastating at their core. Currently, Animal Scream is gearing up to release singles from their EP slated for a January 2025 release, entitled Otherworldy Pictures.

Possessing a riveting catalog of music going all the way back to 2011, Applesauce Tears is the brainchild of Athens, Georgia based musician Craig Bennett. Now consisting of a collection of friends and acquaintances, the group create catchy, yet unconventional instrumentals that are bound to captivate any who listen. Furthering their unique brand of cinematic soundtracks and psychedelic experimental music, these sound collagist dropouts are gearing up for the release of their latest LP, Balcony Confidential, slated for a January 27, 2025 release.

Philadelphia native, LA-based singer-songwriter Andrea Vallé returns with a new track “Hood N***a” featuring BbyAfricka and ZelooperZ. The track showcases Andrea’s laid back style with experimental production wuth clever lyricism. Listen HERE.

Andrea Vallé in her own words:

“After a long hiatus from releasing music, ‘Hood N***a’ is the fun and long awaited comeback single. As well as my official LA debut on the scene. Walking into this new era of music has me feeling free and eager to share the experimental pockets I’ve entered since my last release ‘Badder Not Sadder’. I’ve touched on almost every genre from rap, to alternative r&b, to hyper pop, and house.  I’m super excited to lean into this unconventional notion of sounds.”

This release follows Andrea’s the 7-track EP, Lovergirl, which introduced Andrea’s artistic range, exploring themes of love, closure, and self-worth. Serving up strong lyricism according to Notion Mag. The EP contains previously-released singles, “Wild” is “easily the type of track that makes you yearn hard for a dimly lit, crowded party where anything can go down” says NYLON. Also, featuring “Lovergirl” Annie Bercy-directed visual that premiered on HYPEBAE. Serving up the perfect mix of R&B and neo-soul, tracks were written by herself aside from a feature from Brooklyn Rapper, AJRadico. Andrea Vallé is sure to be an artist to watch for 2021.

The Sweetest of It All, MaLLy’s latest full-length offering and collaboration produced entirely by Last Word is a 14-track opus of personal and breezy expressions over a lush, colorful, and futuristic-soul soundscape from the 70’s and 80’s with a light touch of boom-bap nostalgia. Throughout the album, MaLLy calmly explores and identifies the layers of his humanity through the lens of joy, resilience, and equanimity. The south Minneapolis rapper confidently champions true liberation, his Blackness, and sobriety as some of the Sweetest elements the Creator has gifted him in this life.

Miraculously, the album was birthed and completed worlds apart with MaLLy recording in Minneapolis while Last Word tirelessly sampled and chopped an array of audio textures from his new home in New Zealand. Although on opposite sides of the earth, both artists remained creative, reconnected on The Travelers Tour with Brother Ali in 2022, and collectively vowed to create an album that had its own sound, followed no trends and embodied the essence of wholeness like so many Hip-Hop classics that shaped their lives.

From start to finish, the duo fearlessly taps into new territory and designs a space that is much lighter, expansive and uplifting than their gritty and experimental collection from 2014, The Colors of Black. Fast forward 10 years later, and it is clear both MaLLy and Last Word’s energy is in sync, refined and more mature.

MaLLy’s wisdom of years past, smooth flows, subtle wordplay and succinct content meld naturally with Last Word’s alluring production on the space age sonics of “New Year, New Wave” or funky-organ laced “Dreaming” and the moody and misty “100 Heartbreaks.” Whether the emcee is opening his heart or attempting to put it back together, in solidarity or comfortable in solitude, it might be safe to say that MaLLy is reinvigorated and focused with his most purposeful content and body of work to date.

The Sweetest of It All is rap, it’s soulful, it’s rich, it’s blue and it’s Black. A complete manifestation of balance, inner peace and growth.

You will embrace the beauty of Terra Renae’s soul and sound the moment she opens up her magnetic voice. Despite her talent, the Louisville, Kentucky native never anticipated embarking on the musical journey she envisioned. After initially pursuing modeling, she shifted to academia, completing her doctoral degree just in time for her true music aspirations to materialize through a chance encounter in Los Angeles with Macy Gray. When Terra was put on the spot to sing, Macy heard it. She felt it. She could see the countless fans waiting to connect with Terra Renae’s unique voice, and just like Macy Gray you will be enchanted with her.

Macy Gray instantly stepped onboard as Terra Renae’s Executive Producer. She quickly enlisted Los Angeles based producer / songwriter Mikal Blue (One Direction, Colbie Caillat) to harness Terra Renae’s authenticity, determination, and playful soul. As they collaborated, Terra Renae’s sound took shape, and Macy introduced her as a special guest on select dates of her fall 2023 tour.

Continuing to define her sound in more LA recording sessions with Macy Gray, Mikal Blue, and other top songwriters, Terra Renae has garnered the attention of over 20K followers across social media platforms. With new music on the horizon and more tour dates with Macy Gray in the works, 2024 will mark the official introduction of Terra Renae.

A few weeks ago, acclaimed electronic composer and producer Elori Saxl announced her new full-length album Earth Focus, set for digital and limited edition vinyl release on November 15 via Western Vinyl. The album, which consists of material Elori composed for the PBS television series of the same name, debuted with the lead single “Grow Along the River Slow,” composed as an unofficial theme for the show. Today, Elori unveils its companion track, “Grows Along the River Fast,” the result of the series directors’ request “to create a variation on the theme that mirrors the pacing, builds, and releases of Hiroshi Yoshimura’s Singing Stream (Spring Mix).” Like the rest of the album, the mesmerizing track was made using digitally processed recordings of water and wind and layered with digital and analog sounds that strike a delicate balance between the real and unreal, evoking California’s wildlands and the imprint of urban infrastructure upon them. The track is accompanied by an abstract visualizer, created by Elori using footage from the original series as source material.

Starting in bedrooms and basements in 2010, State Champs quickly ascended as leaders of a new scene owing as much to early Fall Out Boy and Green Day as latter-day Warped Tour bands. They have become one of the most recognizable names in pop-punk over the last decade and have helped to define the genre for a new generation of fans. They are experts at building authentic connections with audiences through smart and uplifting songcraft and passionate performances.

Over the course of their career, State Champs has received accolades from the likes of Rolling Stone, MTVKerrang!, UpsetAlternative Press, and Rock Sound, among others. Their sophomore album, Around the World and Back, entered the Billboard Current Rock Albums chart at No. 3 and made Rock Sound’s Top 10 Albums of the Year. Living Proof followed in 2018, and that same year Billboard called them “modern-day pop-punk torchbearers.” The band has also collaborated with some of pop-punk’s heaviest hitters, co-writing songs with Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 on their latest album Kings of the New Age.

On State Champs, they cement themselves as an outfit that can and will stand the test of time.

With the approach of their 25th anniversary, acclaimed Canadian rock band Silverstein took to the deserts of Joshua Tree to challenge themselves in more ways than ever before. The result is the band’s most eclectic and prolific body of work yet: Antibloom / Pink Moon. A double album that draws from across Silverstein’s diverse influences, Antibloom will see its release on February 21st, 2025 via UNFD, with Pink Moon to follow later in the year. Pre-orders for Antibloom are available now at https://lnk.to/antibloom.

In 2025 we will be celebrating 25 years as band. For a milestone this large, we felt it deserved the largest campaign of our career,” the band shares. We felt incredibly inspired, and put everything we’ve learned / felt / experienced into this double-album. They say it takes an artist their whole life to write their debut album, but with starting this band so young, it felt like it took 25 years to write Antibloom / Pink Moon – the absolute collection of our musical style and ideas we’ve pioneered over these years.”

In addition to announcing Antibloom / Pink Moon, Silverstein has shared their new single and music video “Confession”. A melodic and emotional track about owning up to one’s mistakes, “Confession” serves as a follow up to previously released single “Skin & Bones”. The two offer listeners their first glimpse at what Antibloom / Pink Moon has in store.

On “Confession” vocalist Shane Told reveals: “I’m so excited to be releasing our new banger ‘Confession’ out into the world. Early on working through our initial demos I knew this one had something very special in it. It was fun to craft this one in the studio and perfect it, deciding exactly how to present it with all the different layers of music. I think it’s one of the strongest singles we’ve ever released because, at its core, it’s all about the message, melody, and emotion.”

You better start rethinking your top 5!

It’s been six years since Benny The Butcher & 38 Spesh linked up for the fan-favorite Stabbed & Shot.  Now, that all changes, as Benny & Spesh have released the long-awaited collaborative sequel; Stabbed & Shot 2.  Benny & Spesh also released a new video for “Internal Affairs,” which features OT The Real.  The video for “Internal Affairs” can be viewed below.

For Benny The Butcher, 2024 has already been a monumental year. After dropping his major label solo debut, Everybody Can’t Go, on Def Jam, he followed up with “the summer ain’t over until I say it is” projects Summertime Butch and Buffalo Butch, Vol. 1, the latter of which featured his long-awaited collaboration with Drake.  Benny’s ability to balance his gritty street lyricism with his growing mainstream presence has solidified his reputation as one of hip-hop’s most versatile voices. Stabbed & Shot 2sees him returning to his roots, reconnecting with 38 Spesh for another round of paper chasing.

38 Spesh, has also been active and supremely accurate this year, most recently with the release of the critically acclaimed, and perhaps his most visible project to date, Mother & Gun, which again displayed his versatility as both an emcee and producer.

Benny & Spesh also realize that their long-awaited collaborative sequel includes much higher stakes and baked-in expectations.  But, they thrive under that pressure, as Stabbed & Shot 2 is the rare sequel that surpasses its predecessor; when you turn on the bright kitchen lights, Benny & Spesh are always going to cook up and deliver.

Dubbing themselves as the best tandem to go back and forth since Jadakiss & Styles P, Stabbed & Shot 2 is a master class in plug talk, survival tactics, and everything you want from a Benny & Spesh drop.  The chemistry is even more elevated, their distinct styles blend seamlessly, and they effortlessly deliver more of the barred-out, street narratives and vivid storytelling that has defined their careers.  Stabbed & Shot 2 is a testament to their growth, and resilience as artists and entrepreneurs.

Stabbed & Shot 2 is a sound that can only come from experienced street hustlers.  There is some glorification because we’re proud of where we come from and it made us who we are; but this is pure intellectual street dialect mixed with hindsight” Benny The Butcher stresses.  “You know what you’re getting when Spesh and I go back and forth.  You gotta talk to Nas & AZ, Kiss & Styles to even compare to us.”

“When me and bro go back and forth, it’s trouble.  The best to do it, believe that” 38 Spesh exclaims.  “Stabbed & Shot 2, get ready, it’s that time again!”

Stabbed & Shot 2 features guest appearances and production from Busta Rhymes, Dave East, Ransom, Harry Fraud, Daringer, ElCamino, OT The Real, Bink, V Don, Klass Murda and StreetRunner.

Stabbed & Shot 2 is now available via BSF/TCF Records.

Power punk bubble grunge darlings Daisy Grenade today revealed “How To Hide A Body,” a cheeky ode to nasty exes produced by Courtney Ballard (5 Seconds of Summer, All Time Low, The Used).  In true Daisy Grenade style, Dani Nigro and Keaton Whittaker imagine gloriously glossy gore where they gift an all-too-deserving boyfriend a grizzly end.

Montreal-based multi-faceted artist and trance visionary TDJ returns with her Pitchfork-acclaimed, audio-visual SPF INFINI series with the release of SPF INFINI: GENESIS. The ambitious project intertwines a narrative-driven music video, a flawless DJ Mix, and a 36-track compilation of all original music into one. It’s out now via Collection Disques Durs.

In this final spin of her trance-infused experimental A/V saga, TDJ explores the profound disconnection between humans and their environment. While past SPF INFINI episodes unraveled cinematic, algorithm-obsessed, Black Mirror-esque scenes in the desert and jungle, GENESIS embarks on a journey to the heavens on a private plane, focusing on the series’ recurring characters and new guests. Several plotlines take place over the course of 83 minutes, including an airborne dance with a dragon, an impromptu sky-dive, and mile-high love stories, with stops along the way that explore the many facets of TDJ’s rich aesthetic, visually and sonically.

Dutch DJ and producer Mau P debuts on Defected with ‘Merther’, a hard-hitting electronic damager built for the club. In the short amount of time since his debut, Mau P has already soared to the top of the Beatport, Shazam and Spotify charts with solo releases like ‘On Again’ and ‘BEATS FOR THE UNDERGROUND’.
His heavy production style has attracted fans from the global house scene and led to official remixes for major names like Calvin Harris, Swedish House Mafia and Armand Van Helden. “I’m so stoked to finally release ‘Merther’ after testing it out on the road for a really long time. It’s actually sick that I get to put this out with the legendary sample from Ini Kamoze’s ‘World A Music’. I didn’t think this would be remotely possible a few years ago but here we are. My fans have also been asking for this one nonstop so I’m really happy they don’t have to keep listening to ripped versions online and can finally get the full finished version. ‘Merther’ has also been a staple in Solomun’s sets lately and got supported by Michael Bibi also, which is amazing to see because those are two artists I admire very much. ‘Merther’ will be out in the world soon, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it for you.” – Mau P

STREAM: WHOMADEWHO X KÖLSCH- HEARTLESS (FIDELES REMIX)

The Fideles remix of “Heartless” takes a track that blends the styles of WhoMadeWho and Kölsch into an effortlessly beautiful work that creates a calming atmosphere, and livens it up while staying true to its roots. The Italian duo replaces the gentle kick with a punchier, more dynamic beat, infusing the track with their signature grandeur and elevating it to new heights.

“Black Girl, Precious Little Girl, Let Me Put You Up Where You Belong”!

Building on her momentum as one of the industry’s top rising talents, Che Noir is preparing to release her highly anticipated (and second project of 2024), The Lotus Child, on 10.25.24.

Today, in addition to announcing her new project, Che released the project’s first single, “Black Girl,” which features Rapsody; “Black Girl” is now available at all DSP’s.

“I started working on the production for The Lotus Child in 2021, with the intent to really showcase my production skills on this project.  My fans know I produce, but they don’t know how important it is for me to be a multi-faceted artist.  With that in mind, I really branched out and explored, and brought in other musicians to help me bring my vision to life” Che explains.  “With The Lotus Child, I had an opportunity to work with one of my favorite artists; Rapsody.  It was a long journey trying to get the record finished and cleared.  We recorded two different versions of this song, and thankfully, got it finished and cleared a week before its release; but my team made it work!  Thank you to my team and thank you to Rapsody!’

The Lotus Child fully realizes and showcases Che Noir’s lyrical prowess, storytelling ability and dexterity as a producer.  The project features collaborations with renowned artists such as Rapsody, 38 Spesh, Statik Selektah, Brady Watt, The Lost Poets and Jack Davey among others; and further solidifies Che Noir’s position as one of the top rising multi-hyphenates within the hip-hop scene.  It’s time for fans and the culture to give Che her roses.

“The meaning behind the title The Lotus Child is a play off the “Lotus Flower.”  The Lotus commonly serves as a sacred for purity, rebirth and strength.  Lotuses rise from the mud without stains, and they are a symbol of purity” Che conveys.  “I look at it as a metaphor for the beauty of pulling yourself out and rising from the mud, I am a child and product of that.  I am not alone in understanding and feeling like that. “Even when its roots are in the dirtiest waters, the Lotus produces the most beautiful flower.”

Che Noir’s The Lotus Child will be released on 10.25.24.

Concrete Husband, the Brooklyn-based music producer, DJ, and composer Carlos Aguilar, today announced his debut album Piel, due out December 6 via White Owl Records. The full-length is presented in two parts, revealing the duality of Aguilar’s artistic identity. To preview these sides, Concrete Husband is sharing two singles: “Despendida,” which spotlights his ethereal ambient compositions driven by his conservatory-trained flute virtuosity, while “Your Pulse” showcases his propulsive and sensual groove-based techno.

The announcement arrives in the wake of Aguilar swiftly making his mark in both New York City’s underground techno and experimental composer scenes, regularly performing at venues like Basement, Knockdown Center, and Public Records, where he’s shared bills with artists ranging from Bendik Giske to Len Faki. His music has also extended well beyond the local club circuit—whether it’s on a lengthy international tour with Eartheater, scoring Dion Lee’s Fashion Week 2024 Shanghai show, performing at the Pre-Met Gala Dinner hosted by Michèle Lamy of Rick Owens, or as a featured flutist for Ari Aster’s A24 film Beau is Afraid.

Concrete Husband, in a curious alchemy, lets us see both sides of the coin at once. Piel, a journey of a double EP, expresses the artist’s dual sides; the themes of his ambient works and his techno prove strangely similar. In this long-form project, Concrete Husband presents his two styles next to each other. A searing flute opening delves into a torrent of techno madness, topped with two stellar remixes from techno icons TWR72 and 1morning. In all, Concrete Husband takes us from introverted depths to extroverted heights by deftly defying genre.

Belgian composer Alice Hebborn‘s debut album, Saisons, is a contemplative journey through sound and nature. It’s a deeply personal exploration of humanity’s relationship with the natural world, shaped by Hebborn’s walks in the countryside and her readings on ecofeminism and environmental harmony.

Saisons was born out of Hebborn’s move to the countryside in 2021, where her daily immersion in wild landscapes inspired the intricate sonic world of this project. The seven-movement album for piano and electronics does not represent literal seasons, but rather collects impressions of nature as it is today—fluid, unpredictable, and increasingly disrupted by climate change. Pianist Nao Momitani, Hebborn’s close collaborator, performs on the album, blending acoustic and electronic textures into a harmonious and organic soundscape.

“Through Saisons, I explore the idea of an ideal where humans live in harmony with nature,” Hebborn explains. “I wanted the album to mirror how nature functions: all elements influencing and transforming one another in an inter-connected, balanced way.” Central to Saisons is Hebborn’s fascination with the micro-details of sound, where every tiny vibration and texture evokes the delicate balance of the natural world. Influenced by readings like Bernie Krause’s The Orchestra of Animals, Hebborn sought to emulate nature’s harmony in sound, creating an interplay between piano and electronics that echoes the fluidity of ecosystems.

Today, techno’s masked maven, Pawlowski, unveils his latest single, “Back With Another One” – a highly anticipated collaboration with Fenrick. The duo, deeply rooted in old-school 90s’ techno, have blended their distinct brands of artistry into a masterpiece, bridging the gap between the old and the new, showcasing their commitment to collaboration and sonic experimentation. “Back With Another One” immediately plunges into the depths of their synergistic genius, instantly drawing listeners in with a pulsating beat and playful, trance-like vocal samples. Highlighting his technical prowess, Pawlowski seamlessly weaves Fenrick’s bouncy basslines with his signature melodic bells, cascading into a shimmering sequence creating a euphoric, futuristic vibe while simultaneously paying homage to the old-school ‘90s techno that both artists are rooted in.

Global rock phenomenon and “Samurai Guitarist”, MIYAVI, has released his highly anticipated new album ‘LOST IN LOVE, FOUND IN PAIN’ out today via Rise Records. The album includes the singles “Eat Eat Eat”, “We Stay Up All Night (La Da Da Da)”, “Broken Fantasy” and “Tragedy of Us” released previously. Stream the album in full at this link: https://miyavi.lnk.to/LostInLove

“This album represents a three-year journey of sonic exploration, where I allowed the creative process to lead the way,” says MIYAVI on the new album. “I intentionally took my time with this record, stepping outside my artistic comfort zone to push my boundaries and craft my best work. It’s been a vulnerable place to be after so many years in the music industry, but I knew it was necessary.

I was fortunate to collaborate with a diverse group of artists whose influences have woven their way into the album, with MIYAVI’s signature guitar serving as the unifying thread. My life has always been split between Japan and the U.S., and that duality is deeply reflected in this album. Some tracks hit hard, while others are just pure fun, giving the record a split personality. Lost in Love is the culmination of a lifetime of experiences, encapsulating all the facets of who I am as MIYAVI.”
