The Review: A Dazzling Biopic On A Pop Icon In ‘Better Man’

Better Man is a dazzling biopic that chronicles the tumultuous life and career of British pop icon Robbie Williams. Directed by Michael Gracey, known for his work on The Greatest Showman, this film is a vibrant and emotionally charged journey through the highs and lows of one of music’s most charismatic figures.

From the outset, Better Man captivates with its bold visual style and energetic pacing. Gracey’s direction is both innovative and heartfelt, capturing the essence of Williams’ larger-than-life persona. The film opens with a young Robbie, navigating the challenges of fame as the youngest member of the boyband Take That. The early scenes are a nostalgic trip down memory lane, filled with the infectious pop hits that defined a generation.

As the narrative progresses, the film delves into the darker aspects of Williams’ life. His struggles with addiction, mental health, and the pressures of stardom are portrayed with unflinching honesty. These moments are where Better Man truly shines, offering a raw and unvarnished look at the cost of fame. One of the film’s standout features is its use of music. The soundtrack is a celebration of Williams’ greatest hits, seamlessly woven into the narrative to enhance the emotional impact of key scenes. From the anthemic “Angels” to the introspective “Feel,” each song serves as a poignant reminder of Williams’ enduring legacy. The musical numbers are choreographed with flair, adding a layer of spectacle that is both entertaining and deeply moving.

Visually, Better Man is a feast for the eyes. Gracey’s background in visual effects is evident in the film’s stunning cinematography and imaginative sequences. The use of CGI to depict Williams’ inner demons as literal monsters is a bold creative choice that pays off, adding a surreal and symbolic layer to the narrative. These elements elevate the film beyond a standard biopic, making it a unique and memorable cinematic experience.

Better Man is not without its flaws though. It may have viewers including myself asking did we need the use of CGI to depict Williams’? Could the biopic been even better had they casted an actor to play the role of Williams? Despite the CGI, as the story progresses you become so engrossed in it, that the fact Williams is being portrayed by a CGI monkey becomes less noticeable.

Better Man is an ode to resilience and stardom. It is a film that celebrates the highs and confronts the lows of Robbie Williams’ life with equal measure. Whether you’re a long-time fan of Williams or new to his music, Better Man is a must-see film that will leave you inspired and uplifted.

Better Man is screening at Luna Outdoors Sunday 15th Decemeber for a pizza and beer night, and at Luna Leederville from December 26th.
