The Review: Take A Sunlit Journey Through Naples with ‘Parthenope’

Parthenope, directed by Paolo Sorrentino and produced by A24, is a visually stunning and emotionally coming-of-age drama that takes viewers on a journey through the sunlit streets of Naples. The film, which premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, stars Celeste Dalla Porta as the titular character, alongside a stellar cast including Gary Oldman, Stefania Sandrelli, and Silvio Orlando.

Set in the 1950s, Parthenope follows the life of a young woman named Parthenope, who is named after the ancient siren associated with Naples. The film beautifully captures her formative years as she navigates the complexities of family, love, and self-discovery.

One of the film’s standout features is its cinematography by Daria D’Antonio. The sun-drenched landscapes and intimate close-ups create a visual poetry that enhances the narrative’s emotional depth. Each frame is meticulously crafted, reflecting Sorrentino’s signature style of combining grandeur with subtlety. Celeste Dalla Porta delivers a magnetic performance as Parthenope. Her portrayal is both delicate and powerful, capturing the innocence and determination of a young woman finding her place in the world. Honorable mention to Gary Oldman, as the eccentric writer John Cheever, providing a counterpoint to Parthenope’s youthful exuberance.

Sorrentino’s screenplay is a blend of humor and sorrow. The dialogue is sharp and reflective, often delving into existential themes without losing the warmth and charm of its setting. The film’s pacing is quite slow, but that allows the audience to fully immerse themselves in Parthenope’s world.

Some may find the film’s introspective nature and slow pacing challenging. I did at times, and it’s probably the films biggest flaw. Those who are willing to embrace its rhythm though, might find it a rewarding experience.

Parthenope is a testament to Paolo Sorrentino’s artistry and his ability to craft deeply personal and visually stunning films. It is a love letter to Naples and a celebration of the human spirit.

You can catch Parthenope at Luna Palace Cinemas now.
