INsiders Guide: Peter Landi, Emily Haber, Myd, Banman…

Peter Landi is a multi-instrumentalist hailing from the East End of Long Island, New York. Currently living in Canada, he has called Toronto home for the better part of a decade.

From the start, he’s had a singular drive: make great music. From his formative years in hometown basements, to gigging on the Lower East Side, to now touring the globe with a myriad of artists, he does just that.

Shortly after moving to Toronto, Landi joined forces with Canadian punks, Single Mothers, and has since become an in-demand touring and studio drummer for artists like Julianna Riolino, Nicolette & The Nobodies, Espanola, Eamon McGrath, The Drew Thomson Foundation, and many more.

Like his peers, Landi was uncertain about his future during March of 2020. Canceled tours gave him time to comb through his demos, sparking a new phase in his songwriting. The result was a collection of singles that were lyrically personal in a new sonic landscape. His first single, “High,” was featured in this year’s critically acclaimed, IFC Canadian slasher film, In A Violent Nature.

His latest offering, “Turn Back Now”, continues to showcase his ability to write songs full of catchy hooks and melodies that stay stuck in your head. Drawing inspiration from giants like Tom Petty, Oasis and Queens of the Stone Age, Peter Landi still manages to sound uniquely like himself.

Emily Haber has spent her life immersed in music, from her earliest days growing up in an award-winning family band to becoming a sought-after songwriter in Los Angeles. Known for her evocative lyricism and profound storytelling, Emily’s journey is one of resilience, creativity, and a lifelong love for music.

Born to two musical parents who had paused their careers to focus on their family, Emily’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter. When she was six, her parents started a children’s band called Laughing Pizza, bringing Emily front and center. Signed to Sony/Epic Records, Laughing Pizza toured the United States for ten years, performing on PBS Kids and on stages nationwide. From age 7 to 17, Emily lived on the road, creating lifelong memories and building the foundation for her future in music.

In 2015, she lost her mother to stage 4 ovarian cancer—a loss that profoundly influenced her life and art. With a decade of experience working solely with her family, Emily’s loss began her solo music journey, shaped by both triumph and heartbreak.

Working professionally in her younger years, Emily faced unique challenges. Born with severe hearing loss in both ears, she wore hearing aids from the age of four. For a decade, Emily performed by relying on instinct and muscle memory. Her hearing aids frequently failed mid-performance, leaving her to navigate live shows in near silence. It wasn’t until advancements in hearing aid technology at 13 that Emily truly heard her own voice, and by 17, she experienced intricate layers of music for the first time thanks to the Starkey Foundation. Emily finally was able to combine her unique feel for music with the reality of how most people understand sound – giving her a 6th sense that is palpable when listening to her recordings.

At 19, Emily moved to Nashville, determined to carve her own path. She kept her history with Laughing Pizza private, building her career from the ground up. She briefly attended Belmont University before diving headfirst into the city’s vibrant songwriting community. Emily worked at the iconic Bluebird Cafe and co-wrote tirelessly, honing her craft and immersing herself in music. A chance meeting with Grammy-winning songwriter Liz Rose at Eddie’s Attic proved pivotal. Liz invited Emily to her house to write, introduced her to Nashville’s tight-knit songwriting circle, and encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

In October 2017, Emily signed with Prescription Songs, marking the start of a prolific professional songwriting career. Her collaborations span a wide range of artists, including Andy Grammer, Joy Oladokun, Anna Clendening, Gryffin, Abby Anderson, carobae, Miki Ratsula, Devon Gabriella, and Erika Jayne. Her work has also resonated across television and film, with placements on CNNThe Sex Lives of College Girls, The L WordThe HillsBatwoman, and Teen Mom.

Myd has returned with two brand new songs – ‘Song For You’ and ‘The Wizard’ – which are both out now via Ed Banger Records / Because Music.

The two new singles signal a nuanced evolution in sound and approach for the French artist, taking in influences from his time spent DJing at venues and parties across the globe these past three years.

‘Song For You’ is a sun kissed, joyous house track which features a funky, filtered bass line, nifty sampling prowess and a dreamy vocal courtesy of Myd himself. ‘The Wizard’ is altogether darker, and the biggest evolution in Myd’s sound to date. A looping vocal sample gives way to relentless synth bass which drives throughout the track as rhythmic synth stabs and percussive loops enter and exit – resulting in a confounding, hypnotic and blissfully psychedelic club journey.

Of the two new singles and his recent live streamed studio lock-in, Myd says:

“I’m stepping into a new chapter of my music, one that channels the energy of the club into something more intimate and universal. This next phase is faster, sharper, and unapologetically focused on the dancefloor. After years of performing live and DJing in clubs, that pulse has naturally found its way into my studio, shaping music that feels vibrant and alive.”

My name is Jordan Banman and I am 28 years old, born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.  I started writing lyrics when I was 16 or 17 years old. Eminem was my inspiration because I was so fascinated by how he could tell a story so well. I became addicted to cocaine at 16 or 17 years old and began to write about my struggles with addiction. As I came up with lyrics, I began to fantasize about one day releasing my own music. It’s been a dream of mine for years. I was heavily addicted to crack and crystal meth, which held me back from pursueing my dream. I’ve overdosed and had to have been revived,  I’ve been homeless, living out of my vehicle.  I’ve been to 4 Treatment centers and been to detox centers over 30 times. I’ve been going to AA/NA/CA meetings for 8 years and haven’t been able to stay clean. In fact, it’s crazy to me that I survived. But, I’ve recently found God and with finding God, came recovery and with recovery, came the opportunity to share my story/music with the world, which gives me purpose. It’s strange to say but in a way, today I’m grateful for all the suffering of my addiction because I wouldnt have some of my songs if it weren’t for certain outcomes.

I studied at Humber College to become an arborist. This was my career for 6-7years, it was a solid career. On April 27th , 2023 I was in a horrific workplace accident. While lifted 30 feet in the air in a bucket truck, I cut my wrist with the chainsaw. This could have been fatal as I was only 1mm way from cutting my artery. It was a career ending accident as I now have PTSD from chainsaws. I was put on WSIB and was given the opportunity to be sent to school for a career change since I am not able to return to my career as an arborist. I was scared because I just lost my career, but I had to make a decision with what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. With this change I realized all I ever wanted to do was release my music, to touch the hearts of others, and inspiring recovering addicts and addicts who are still suffering, that recovery is possible.

Born and raised as the youngest of four kids in a small suburb just outside of New York City, Matty Reynolds has always had a knack for performing. He remembers jumping on his bed singing “Shut Up and Let Me Go” by The Ting Tings at just five years old, and peeking his head out of his bedroom late at night to watch Justin Bieber busking over his big sister’s shoulder. Matty grew up on this big sister’s pop music taste with artists like Katy Perry, Maroon 5, and Miley Cyrus, and developed his love for music through singing duets with her. When he was 10, he was gifted a keyboard and a guitar, and began teaching himself how to play both. Once Matty found Tik Tok in 2019, he started a secret account dedicated to posting covers, and says he was too self conscious to sing for anyone besides his family. However, as his account began to grow he realized it would be impossible to hide any longer. He gained confidence from both acquired Tik Tok fans and people he knew personally reaching out complimenting his voice and cover styles. Once he had built a following and also endured his first real heartbreak, he took his talents to the pen and paper. Initially writing sad love songs, he found that ruminating in his pain only made him feel worse about it. He then began writing fun songs that made him happy and took him away from his anxieties. This led to his highly successful sophomore single “(another) hotel party” released in 2021. The song quickly took Tik Tok by storm and launched Matty’s career forward tangibly for the first time. The young and free anthem has garnered critical and commercial acclaim, with the single now close to 12 million streams. Matty has remained independent, releasing a series of captivating singles since. His upcoming debut EP Somebody Like Me isset to release early summer 2025. The artist collaborated with the likes of acclaimed producer Jackson Hoffman and songwriter Andy Tongren of Young Rising Sons fame for the six song genre-defying musical collection. The music is centered around his girlfriend and the internal struggles he faces from living hundreds of miles away, while also focusing on the hope and happiness he gets from making it all work. These upbeat, promising love songs fuse pop with folk rock and Americana, for an enthralling listen.

Kairvina is an alternative singer/songwriter born and raised in India. Her passion for music found her at a very young age, with evenings spent singing and writing songs about middle school relationships, surprisingly devastating heartbreaks, and brooding soul-searching anthems. It was only a matter of time before that creative energy led her to self-learn guitar and share that angsty spirit.

Taking a leap of faith, Kairvina moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18. Immersing herself in her art, she formed a band, played countless gigs, and developed a conversational way of telling the stories she wants. Inspired by Jeff Buckley, Phoebe Bridgers, and Elliott Smith, she has created her own approach to music- raw and dreamy vocals melting into soft soul and rock, with a clear passion for storytelling and poetry. Her lyrics tend to be introspective and delicate, often with an added pinch of humour, giving a stage to human imperfections.

Her new song “Eternal” is a look at life through the lens of confusion, chaos, and good ol’self deprecation. Her first single of 2025, with many more to follow, she is on a journey of carving the musical world she’s been restlessly envisioning.
