What We Know About Zack Snyder’s Next Movie

Zack Snyder has officially announced his next project, a venture he describes as a personal passion project. According to a recent report from Deadline, Snyder will direct The Last Photograph, a drama that he considers a long-anticipated creative endeavor. The screenplay is penned by Kurt Johnstad, a frequent collaborator of Snyder’s who previously worked with him on 300 and both Rebel Moon films. Snyder will also receive a “story by” credit.

The film’s narrative centers around an ex-DEA operative who returns to South America to search for his missing niece. He teams up with a war photographer—described as a washed-up junkie and the only person who has seen the faces of the killers—and together they venture into the unknown. The story explores themes of memory, trauma, and truth as they confront their pasts and face the mysteries ahead. The official logline states: “Enlisting the help of a war photographer, the only one to have seen the killers’ faces, he sets out to find the children and uncover the truth, but soon learns he must also confront his own ghosts. Their journey into the wilderness pushes them further from civilization, challenging everything they believe and blurring the lines between reality and surrealism.”

Deadline reports that actors Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, both of whom starred in Rebel Moon, will also appear in the film. The outlet notes that Snyder recently secured funding for The Last Photograph, and that his casting choices were influenced by the strong rapport he developed with Martin and Fee during production on Rebel Moon.

Snyder expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The idea of picking up a camera and making an intimate film is very appealing to me. The Last Photograph is a meditation on life and death, reflecting some of my own personal experiences and exploring those themes through visual storytelling.” Production is slated to begin this month, with filming planned later in the year across Iceland, Colombia, and Los Angeles. The film is produced by Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, Gianni Nunnari, and Alisha Stickney.

While the future of the Rebel Moon franchise remains uncertain, Snyder is reportedly focusing on another large-scale project after completing The Last Photograph. It’s unclear whether this will be a new original work or connected to one of his existing projects.
