Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film, following his 2023 release Killers of the Flower Moon, will see him teaming up once again with frequent collaborator and Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio. The project will also star another acclaimed actor, Jennifer Lawrence. Apple Original Films, which previously financed Killers of the Flower Moon, is in negotiations to co-produce and finance the new film alongside StudioCanal. Scorsese will direct a feature adaptation of Peter Cameron’s ghost story novel What Happens at Night, with DiCaprio and Lawrence cast as the leading roles. Production is reportedly scheduled to start in January 2026. The screenplay is written by Patrick Marber, known for films like Closer (2004) and The Critic (2023), according to Deadline.
This collaboration marks the seventh time Scorsese and DiCaprio have worked together as director and actor, after Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Killers of the Flower Moon.
Notably, this will be the first time Scorsese directs Jennifer Lawrence. He served as a producer on her recent film, Die, My Love, which premiered at Cannes this year and is set for US release in November. DiCaprio and Lawrence previously collaborated on the sci-fi comedy Don’t Look Up (2021). There’s been much speculation about what Scorsese’s 27th film will be—possible projects have included a new film about Jesus following The Last Temptation of Christ, a mob drama set in Hawaii starring Dwayne Johnson, and an adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s novel Home. However, it appears that What Happens at Night has become his top priority at the moment.
As for DiCaprio, his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, is receiving critical acclaim and is set to premiere in the US next week. He was also considering several other projects, including Damien Chazelle’s biopic about Evel Knievel, before committing to What Happens at Night. There were reports that he might have been the lead in Scorsese’s adaptation of Home as well.
StudioCanal acquired the rights to Cameron’s book in 2023, with Scorsese attached as a producer at that time. The film currently does not have an announced release date.
