Fox has officially ordered a 12-episode straight-to-series reboot of the beloved 1990s lifeguard drama Baywatch. Fremantle and Fox Entertainment have been developing the project since 2024, and now it’s set to move forward.

Reflecting on the original series, Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn stated, “In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status. Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is poised for a modern-day comeback.” He added, “Together, Fox, Fremantle, Matt Nix, and original co-creator Greg Bonann will bring the California dream to a new generation with fresh stories, rising stars, and all the spectacle that made Baywatch a global sensation.”

According to Deadline, the reboot is scheduled to premiere during Fox’s 2026-2027 broadcast season. The series is created and executive-produced by Matt Nix (known for Burn Notice), who will also serve as showrunner. The creative team is currently debating whether to film in Los Angeles or Australia. The project is also being executive-produced by the original series’ creators—Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and Doug Schwartz—along with Dante Di Loreto.

The official description promises that the reboot will feature “adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry, and beachside heroics that defined the original,” now with a new cast donning the iconic red swimsuits, contemporary settings, new tensions, challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline.

Baywatch originally starred David Hasselhoff as Mitch Buchannon, Parker Stevenson as Craig Pomeroy, Shawn Weatherly as Jill Riley, Billy Warlock as Eddie Kramer, Pamela Anderson as C. J. Parker, Erika Eleniak as Shauni McClain, Peter Phelps as Trevor Cole, Jeremy Jackson as Hobie Buchannon, and Holly Gagnier as Gina Pomeroy. The series aired for eleven seasons on NBC, became a pop culture phenomenon, and led to a spin-off, Baywatch Nights, three direct-to-video movies, and a 2017 film adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.
