A highly anticipated musical comedy featuring two prominent stars has officially announced its release date for next summer. Titled Power Ballad, the film stars Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas and centers on the story of a wedding singer and a former boy-band icon whose unexpected collaboration sparks both success and rivalry when a single song changes everything. Lionsgate has set the release date for Power Ballad as June 5, 2026.

Directed and co-written by John Carney, the film also features Peter McDonald, who serves as both co-writer and co-star. According to Deadline, Power Ballad will open in theaters opposite Amazon MGM Studios’ Masters of the Universe and Warner Bros.’ Animal Friends.

In the story, Paul Rudd portrays Rick, a wedding singer past his prime, who befriends Danny, a declining boy-band star played by Nick Jonas. After a late-night jam session, Danny transforms one of Rick’s songs into a hit, revitalizing his career but also sparking a conflict as Rick fights to claim the credit he believes he deserves. The film delves into themes of friendship, ambition, and self-worth through a musical lens.

The cast also includes Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, Jack Reynor, and Sophie Vavasseur. Carney announced the start of production in May 2024, filming took place in Dublin. Jack Reynor joined the cast later that month, followed by Liu in June. Yaron Orbach is responsible for cinematography, while Stephen O’Connell handles editing. The film is produced by Anthony Bregman, John Carney, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, and Robert Walpole under the banners of 30West, Likely Story, and Treasure Entertainment, working closely with Screen Ireland and other partners during development. The project is a co-production between the United States and Ireland, with Lionsgate distributing worldwide.

Power Ballad is part of Lionsgate’s upcoming release slate, which also includes I Wish You All the Best on November 7, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t on November 14, and the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, set for release on April 24, 2026.
