Trailer: MUBI Announces Streaming Premiere In Australia Plus Debuts Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Series ‘THE NEW YEARS’

MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service, and production company, has announced the acquisition of the Spanish ten-part romantic drama series The New Years (LOS AÑOS NUEVOS) for distribution across North America, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, The Netherlands, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, and India. This multi-territory deal was made with Spanish SVOD platform Movistar Plus. The series will premiere on MUBI with the release of two episodes on December 3, followed by one episode each week.

The New Years, directed by César Award-winning filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen (The Beasts), follows the story of Ana (Iria Del Río, Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End) and Óscar (Francesco Carril, Three Goodbyes), from their first encounter on the night they both turn thirty, through ten New Year’s Eves. Ana lives in a shared apartment, dislikes her job, and frequently changes friends, while Óscar is a doctor with a stable career and loyal companions—until they meet and fall in love. Each episode depicts a single night over ten consecutive years, exploring the evolution of their relationship and offering a candid reflection on modern commitment and the experience of choosing love repeatedly over time.

Created by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Paula Fabra, and Sara Cano, The New Years had its world premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival. The series launched later that year in Spain on Movistar Plus to critical acclaim, with many local journalists praising it as the best series of the year.

Fabrizia Palazzo, Distribution Manager at Movistar Plus International, remarked, “We are very pleased that The New Years will be the first Spanish TV series on a platform dedicated to independent cinema. Reaching viewers across so many territories is a fantastic opportunity for our original content.”

Produced by Domingo Corral and Fran Araújo of Movistar Plus, along with Eduardo Villanueva, Nacho Lavilla, and Rodrigo Sorogoyen of Caballo Films, the series benefits from Sorogoyen’s acclaimed directorial vision. The director, an Oscar® nominee, is renowned in Spain and internationally, having received multiple awards including six Goya Awards. His films have premiered at major festivals such as San Sebastián, Venice, Cannes, and Tokyo. Notable works include May God Save Us (2016), The Realm (2018), and The Beasts (2022), the latter of which premiered at Cannes and earned international accolades, including César and Lumière Awards for Best Foreign Film, as well as the Tokyo Grand Prix. Sorogoyen co-founded Caballo Films in 2011.

This latest acquisition highlights MUBI’s expanding focus on streaming both films and series. Recent exclusive series on the platform include Joe Wright’s Mussolini: Son of the Century, Cooper Raiff’s Hal & Harper, William Kentridge’s Self-Portrait as a Coffee-Pot, and Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom Trilogy. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of its original release, MUBI also released David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult classic Twin Peaks (1990) and its follow-up Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series (2017) in select territories. Additionally, MUBI announced plans to release Wong Kar-Wai’s series Blossoms Shanghai across multiple regions in spring 2026.
