Netflix is set to delve deeper into one of the most notorious cases of manipulation and psychological abuse with its upcoming true crime documentary series, Dirty John. This new series aims to provide a comprehensive and unflinching portrait of the man behind the myth—John Meehan—a dangerous “rom-conman” whose manipulative tactics and violent downfall captured the nation’s attention in the 2010s.

The series, helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Emma Cooper, promises to be “the definitive documentary series of the man behind the myth.” Through the use of never-before-seen archival materials, chilling evidence, and compelling testimonies from the women who survived Meehan’s schemes, Dirty John seeks to shed new light on the disturbing details of the case. It also features insights from investigators who worked tirelessly to piece together the truth behind Meehan’s facade.

John Meehan’s story first gained widespread notoriety through the 2018 Bravo series Dirty John, which starred Eric Bana as Meehan and was based on the popular podcast of the same name by Christopher Goffard. The original series captivated audiences with its portrayal of Meehan’s duplicitous nature and the devastating impact of his manipulations on his victims.

Now, with this new Netflix documentary, viewers can expect a deeper exploration of Meehan’s sinister world. The production is a collaborative effort by Bunim/Murray Productions, a Banijay Americas company, along with Empress Films and Emma Cooper. The project is executive produced by Julie Pizzi, Jesse Daniels, and Melissa G. Moore.

As the story of John Meehan continues to unfold on screen, Dirty John promises to reveal the dark truths behind a man whose ability to deceive and manipulate ultimately led to his violent downfall. This series is poised to be a chilling reminder of the dangerous power of psychological abuse and the resilience of those who survive it.
