Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton star in the upcoming Netflix thriller Apex, which now has an official release date and first-look images. The film will be available exclusively on Netflix starting April 24, 2026. Set against the backdrop of the Australian wilderness, Apex features Theron as a woman fleeing from a deadly assassin played by Egerton.
Netflix’s official synopsis describes the story as: “A grieving woman seeks solace in the wilderness, only to find herself ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a serial killer.”
People Magazine unveiled an exclusive preview of Apex, showcasing images of Theron climbing rocks and Egerton ominously aiming a crossbow. Interestingly, Theron had only been rock climbing as a child in Africa prior to filming. To prepare for her role, she underwent intense physical training. “I was climbing a lot — pretty much every day,” Theron shared with People. “Once I got to Australia, I also did a lot of kayaking. That’s a huge workout. I wanted to get as strong as possible because I was climbing all the mountains in the film, and I did it barefoot, on my own raw feet.” The film also features Eric Bana as Theron’s on-screen partner.
Theron, Egerton, and Bana have all appeared in recent Netflix action thrillers. This past summer, Theron reprised her role as Andy in The Old Guard 2. In 2024, Egerton starred as a TSA agent confronting a terrorist in Carry-On, which became Netflix’s third-most popular English-language film of all time. Bana headlined the 2025 crime drama Untamed, set in Yosemite National Park.
Apex is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, from a screenplay by Jeremy Robbins. Kormákur also serves as a producer, alongside Theron, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, Ian Bryce, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix.
