INsiders Guide Exclusive Interview with Romy Mounzer

1. If your songs could take listeners on a journey, what kind of journey would you want it to be?

If my songs could take listeners on a journey, I’d want it to be a journey of liberation, one where they shed the weight of who they were told to be and to reconnect with who they truly are. It’s about breaking free from past constraints, limitations, and embracing sensitivity as strength, and realizing that our vulnerability is actually our super power. I want listeners to feel seen, understood and to feel less alone, and to walk away with the courage to face their fears and chase their dreams. My music is a call to resilience and unity, a reminder that we rise together, and that there’s triumph in authenticity.

2. How do everyday conversations or moments inspire lines or melodies in your songs?

Everyday conversations and moments are like little sparks, they often light the way to a melody, a lyric, but more importantly to a song. As a mother of two, a lot of my inspiration comes from moments with my children. They remind me of the kind of world I want to help shape, and that naturally flows into my music. Sometimes it’s a quiet moment from my past, or something I see us going through collectively. For example, during the height of COVID, I wrote a song called Triumphant (song produced by Lynx), I wanted to bring peace and comfort to others during such uncertain times. My songs often come from real-life feelings and shared human experiences, they’re a reflection of life, love, struggle, and hope.

3. When creating a new song, do you imagine a specific person or audience while writing?

When I’m creating a new song, I often imagine that I’m speaking to my younger self, offering her the words, comfort, and strength she needed to hear. It’s a way of bringing healing to the past, not just for me, but hopefully for others who need it too. I also think about my children and the world they’re growing up in. Sometimes I write with them in mind, hoping to leave behind messages of resilience, love, hope and self-acceptance. And at other times, I feel like I’m writing to anyone who needs a reminder that they’re not alone and that they have the power to overcome and be fully themselves.

4. Have you ever transformed a negative experience into a positive musical message? How?

Yes, absolutely. Music has always been my way of turning pain into purpose. I wrote a song called Feel (song produced by Lynx), during a time when certain influences in my life were trying to bring me down and steer me away from my true path. Instead of letting it break me, I used that experience to write a message of empowerment. It was my way of reclaiming my voice and encouraging others to do the same.

Another example is a song I wrote during the pandemic called Triumphant (song produced by Lynx). It was such a difficult time for everyone, personally, professionally, emotionally, and that song helped me process everything I was going through. I wanted to create something that reminded people (and myself) that even in the darkest moments, there’s still hope, resilience, and light on the other side.

5. Is there a particular instrument or sound that recently caught your attention and influenced your music?

Lately, I’ve been really drawn to cinematic sounds, ambient textures, and subtle strings that bring a deep emotional atmosphere to the music. At the same time, I love blending genres and eras. I’ve been exploring reggae upbeat tempos and rhythms mixed with pop, and I’m always looking for ways to blend the soul and storytelling of 90s music with today’s modern sound. I’ve been listening to a lot of Michael Jackson lately, his musicality, rhythm, and emotional depth are incredibly inspiring. And I always stay true to my core influences: Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston. Their vocal power and emotional storytelling are at the heart of what I do, and I try to carry that spirit into everything I create.

6. How do you decide which personal stories to share in your music and which to keep private?

I follow my heart. If a story feels like it can help someone else heal, feel seen, heard or feel less alone, then I share it. I believe that there’s strength in vulnerability, and some of the most personal moments carry the most universal truth. But I also believe in protecting certain parts of my life and my journey, some stories are still unfolding, and I honor the timing of when or if they need to be told and/or shared.

7. If you could collaborate with an artist from any genre or era, who would it be and why?

If I could collaborate with any artist, it would be someone like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, or Celine Dion. I grew up listening to them, and they truly shaped who I am as an artist. Their voices were powerful, but it was more than just vocal ability, it was the honesty, emotion, and depth they brought to every song. They were genuine, true, and real. Their music moved people, and that’s the kind of impact I strive for in my own work. A collaboration with any of them would be a full-circle moment for me.
