A Triumphant Week for One Direction Alumni: Louis Tomlinson Drops ‘Imposter’ and ‘How Did I Get Here?’, While Harry Styles Unveils ‘Aperture’

In the ever-evolving landscape of pop music, where former boy band members continue to carve out their individual legacies, this week has been nothing short of electric for fans of One Direction. Louis Tomlinson, the Doncaster-born singer-songwriter known for his raw authenticity and indie-rock leanings, has unleashed his latest single “Imposter” just days before the arrival of his third studio album, How Did I Get Here?. Not to be outdone, his erstwhile bandmate Harry Styles has made a splashy return with “Aperture,” the lead single from his forthcoming fourth album. As the calendar flips to late January 2026, these releases signal a creative resurgence for both artists, blending introspection, bold production, and a nod to their shared roots while pushing forward into new sonic territories.

Louis Tomlinson’s Imposter Syndrome Takes Center Stage

Kicking off the excitement, Tomlinson dropped “Imposter” on January 20, 2026, as the third and final single from his upcoming album.  The track, clocking in at a punchy 2 minutes and 38 seconds, was co-written by Tomlinson alongside Nico Rebscher and Dave Gibson, with Rebscher handling production.  Drawing from personal battles with imposter syndrome—a theme that resonates deeply with artists navigating post-fame life—the song’s lyrics delve into questions of self-worth and identity. Tomlinson has shared that the tune was penned amid the lush jungles of Costa Rica, infusing it with a melodic vulnerability that’s become a hallmark of his solo work.

The accompanying music video, directed with a reflective edge, showcases Tomlinson in moody, introspective scenes that mirror the song’s pulsating bassline and indie flair.  Fans on X (formerly Twitter) have been buzzing, with one user highlighting its “incredibly cool bassline that sticks in our ears.”  Critics have echoed the enthusiasm: Neon Music‘s Alex Harris praised how the track weaves imposter syndrome into its very structure, calling it a confident addition to Tomlinson’s catalog, while OffTheRecordPress lauded its blend of lyrical depth and atmospheric production.  To promote the single, Tomlinson performed it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, building anticipation with a high-energy showcase that captured the song’s mood.

Just three days later, on January 23, 2026, Tomlinson followed up with the full album How Did I Get Here?, released through BMG Rights Management.  This 12-track project marks a significant evolution from his previous efforts, Walls (2020) and Faith in the Future (2022).  Created partly in Costa Rica, the album captures Tomlinson’s fearless artistic growth, leaning back into pop sensibilities with a newfound confidence.  In interviews, Tomlinson explained that unlike his earlier records, where he felt the need to “prove a point” about his identity, this one comes from a place of earned assurance.  Tracks like the lead single “Lemonade” and others explore themes of fatherhood, love, and self-doubt, with production that feels bolder and more experimental.

Early reception has been glowing. Rolling Stone noted that Tomlinson has “found his groove” on this third effort, questioning rhetorically how he arrived at such a sure-footed sound.  Billboard urged fans to stream it immediately, highlighting its role in Tomlinson’s ongoing album cycle.  With tour dates already announced, including a stop at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on July 22, 2026, the album is poised to connect with audiences live.  As one X post exclaimed upon release: “HOW DID I GET HERE IS OUT!!!! LET’S FUCKING GO LOUIS.”

Harry Styles Opens a New Lens with ‘Aperture’

Sandwiched between Tomlinson’s releases, Harry Styles made his long-awaited comeback on January 22, 2026, with “Aperture,” the lead single from his fourth studio album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., slated for March 6.  This marks Styles’ first new music in nearly three years since 2022’s Harry’s House, and it arrives with a bang—or rather, a burst of eccentric energy.  Released via Erskine Records and Columbia, the song explores fresh musical avenues, blending disco influences with Styles’ signature flair.

The music video, which dropped alongside the single, features Styles taking a dramatic fall before erupting into a quirky dance sequence, puzzling and delighting fans in equal measure.  As Variety reported, the video’s thumbnail and visuals have sparked widespread discussion.  Lyrically, “Aperture” seems to play with themes of perception and facade, with lines like “I know you planned it” and “your crystal ball ain’t so clear” hinting at media scrutiny and staged realities—perhaps a meta nod to Styles’ highly publicized life.  One fan on X theorized that the title reflects living “through a lens,” where what we see might be fabricated.

Critics are hailing it as a “joyous, quietly radical track” suited for dancefloors and heartfelt connections.  Forbes described it as ushering in a new era, embracing light and innovation.  USA Today celebrated it as a hint of Styles’ exploratory direction, while People focused on its visual spectacle.   With the full album tracklist revealed, including songs like “Carla’s Song,” anticipation is building for what promises to be another genre-bending chapter in Styles’ career.

A Shared Legacy, Divergent Paths

For Directioners, this confluence of releases feels like a gift. Both Tomlinson and Styles rose to fame in One Direction, but their solo trajectories couldn’t be more distinct: Tomlinson’s grounded, rock-infused introspection versus Styles’ flamboyant, genre-hopping experimentation. Yet, there’s an undercurrent of mutual respect—Tomlinson has spoken fondly of his band days, and Styles’ eclectic style often echoes the group’s pop foundations. In a week where pop music feels alive with possibility, these drops remind us why these artists endure: their ability to evolve while staying true to the vulnerability that first captured hearts.
