The Review: The True Story Of The Rise of Joseph Bologne In ‘Chevalier’

I was lucky enough to attend a media screening of this remarkable true story thanks to Luna Palace Cinemas. It follows Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-George, a French-Caribbean violinist, composer and champion fencer played by Kelvin Harrison Jr. Born on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, he was the son of a white plantation owner and his Black slave. Joseph Bologne went on to excel in a lot of activities that were rarely accessible to people of color in 18th-century France. He was a champion swordsman and a remarkable musician who exceled at the violin, and was invited to perform at Versailles, where Marie Antoinette reportedly accompanied him on stage. The most interesting thing I discovered during this movie is the majority of Bologne’s life and accomplishments were largely erased under Napoleon.

I found this to be a compelling story of how Bologne rose under France’s overtly racist Code Noir, an example of Black excellence dating back even before the French Revolution. A story like this couldn’t be effective without some talented actors, Kelvin Harrison Jr. brings depth and authenticity to the character, showcasing Joseph’s relentless determination to overcome the racial and societal barriers imposed upon him.

The love affair between Joseph and Marie-Josephine (Samara Weaving), adds an intricate layer to the story. Their passionate and forbidden relationship highlights the complexities of love and power amidst a backdrop of a rigid and aristocratic society. Weaving’s portrayal of Marie-Josephine is mesmerizing, capturing both her charm and vulnerability as she navigates her own struggles within the gilded cage of royalty.

As Joseph’s star rises, so does the envy and hostility of those who resent his triumphs. The film delves into the societal prejudices, leading to a heart-wrenching falling out with Marie-Josephine. Honorable mentions have to go to Lucy Boynton and Minnie Driver, who give strong supporting performances as Queen Marie Antoinette and opera singer La Guimard.

‘Chevalier’ is a captivating biopic that shines a much-needed spotlight on an extraordinary and overlooked historical figure. Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Samara Weaving deliver powerful performances that breathe life into Joseph Bologne and Marie-Josephine, allowing audiences to experience their triumphs and tribulations firsthand.

‘Chevalier’ hits Australian cinemas August 3rd.
