The Review: ‘Gran Turismo’ Takes A Promising Route

In the realm of unlikely adaptations, Sony’s decision to bring the Gran Turismo franchise to the big screen may have raised eyebrows. However, “Gran Turismo” the movie takes an unexpected route, morphing into a biopic rather than a direct game adaptation. Charting the rise of professional driver Jann Mardenborough, portrayed by Archie Madekwe, the film delves into his journey from being a Gran Turismo gamer to facing off against the world’s elite racers.

Under the direction of Neill Blomkamp, Gran Turismo successfully captures the essence of the game’s simulation racing, occasionally blurring the line between game and movie. The immersion is so strong that you might find yourself eager to reinstall Gran Turismo 7 after watching.

While the core narrative follows the classic sports success formula, Mardenborough’s progression from skilled gamer to professional driver is engaging and inspiring. Earning a spot at GT Academy after a standout performance in Gran Turismo 7, he’s propelled into a boot camp trial, a unique path to professional racing. The interactions between Mardenborough and his trainer, portrayed by a gruff David Harbour, adds depth to the film, and while Orlando Bloom’s portrayal of a marketer overseeing GT Academy, feels somewhat peripheral but at the same time important to the story.

Not without its flaws, the film’s focus is unquestionably on the track. Interspersed with compelling racing scenes, it thrives in its portrayal of the thrill of racing. The film’s greatest triumph lies in its adaptation of the video games. Mirroring the immersive feeling of starting up Gran Turismo 7, the movie replicates the experience, transporting viewers to the world of competitive racing. A visual tour of various global tracks, coupled with HUD elements, captivates the audience, making them feel part of the race.

In the end, “Gran Turismo” manages to bring a successful adaptation to the big screen, offering an engaging portrayal of Jann Mardenborough’s journey, through epic visuals and immersive sound. ‘Gran Turismo’ will favorably resonate with fans of the franchise.
