The Review: The Electrifying ‘Love Lies Bleeding’

From the moment Lou (played brilliantly by Kristen Stewart) locks eyes with Jackie (Katy O’Brian) in the gym, their chemistry ignites like a fuse. Lou’s mundane existence as a lonely lesbian in a small New Mexico town takes a thrilling turn. Their connection is electric, and within hours, they’re entangled in a passionate affair that transcends societal norms.

Against the backdrop of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s superstardom, Jackie, a drifter and aspiring competitive bodybuilder, flexes her raw sexuality and brute strength. Her veins pop, muscles ripple, and the gym becomes their secret haven. But Jackie’s past and Lou’s dangerous family connections threaten to unravel their newfound love.

Love Lies Bleeding weaves together elements of neo-noir and lesbian romance. Imagine Bound meets Thelma and Louise, with a dash of surreal body horror à la David Cronenberg. The camera lingers on Jackie’s oiled-up muscles, hinting at transformations both physical and emotional.

Lou’s sister Beth (Jena Malone) endures abuse from her husband (Dave Franco), Lou’s loathsome brother-in-law. Meanwhile, their father, Lou Sr. (Ed Harris), runs guns across the border. Lou tries to escape this dangerous web, but her affair with Jackie pulls her back into the chaos.

Director Rose Glass masterfully blends sensuality and violence. Erotic close-ups contrast with Jackie’s righteous rage. Lou’s impulsive nature collides with Jackie’s ferocity. As their love intensifies, so does the danger. Innocent bystanders become collateral damage in their tumultuous journey.

Stewart’s portrayal of Lou is raw and magnetic. She navigates love, danger, and family ties with vulnerability and strength. Lou’s internal struggle mirrors the external chaos, and Stewart’s performance anchors the film. Love Lies Bleeding keeps hearts racing. The ’80s soundtrack pulses alongside the action. Bullets fly, secrets unravel, and Lou and Jackie hurtle toward an explosive climax. Glass’s audacity keeps us perched on the edge, breathless.

Known for unexpected storytelling, A24 delivers another gem. Love Lies Bleeding is unapologetically queer, visually arresting, and emotionally charged. It’s peak A24—bold, unforgettable, and unlike anything else.

Love Lies Bleeding is a fever dream of desire, danger, and defiance. Strap in, hold your breath, and let the adrenaline surge. This film isn’t just a pulse-pounding ride; it’s a declaration that love can be both salvation and destruction. A24, take a bow—you’ve done it again.

Love Lies Bleeding is in cinemas March 14. Catch it at Luna Palace Cinemas.
