INsiders Guide: Karisa, Gregory Darling & Julian Lennon, The Southern Residents, Black V Neck, The Veils…

Karisa is a Canadian singer/songwriter and musician based in Toronto Ontario. She began releasing music in 2020 with her debut EP titled Vaporcoast and has been releasing music since. She combines nostalgic visuals with synth/guitar-based instrumentals that use sounds from 1980’s New Wave and 1990s-2000s dance beats. She incorporates the “blonde bombshell” aesthetic with nostalgic elements to create a unique visual and listening experience.

Acclaimed producer/songwriter, Gregory Darling and Grammy nominated artist Julian Lennon, long-time friends and collaborators, are set to open 2025 with the release of “A New Dream.” This song, written in the South of France in collaboration with their dear friend Anthony Caligagan, has a meaningful history, first appearing on Darling’s debut album Shell. Now reimagined with a fresh production, “A New Dream” is ready to reach new audiences and inspire listeners around the world.

The bond between Darling and Lennon goes back to the early ’90s in Los Angeles, where Darling was performing with his band, Darling Cruel. The two artists reconnected in Europe in the mid-90s, working on Lennon’s album Photograph Smile, and from that collaboration, a lasting partnership was born. Over the decades, they have toured the world and collaborated on numerous projects, including tracks on Lennon’s albums Everything Changes and Jude. Speaking of the new single, Lennon shares, “Working with Greg is like working with your brother/best friend… And ‘A New Dream’ is something we both aspire to….”

The message of “A New Dream” resonates with universal themes that connect all of us- our dreams, fears and insecurities- and it serves as a beacon of hope, reminding listeners that even the impossible can be achieved.

Sonically, “A New Dream” is enveloped in a warm, melancholic tone, with echoing vocals that are rich in sincerity and emotion. Swirling synths create an atmospheric texture that mirrors the feeling of longing, enhancing the song’s dreamlike and reflective quality. The lyrics evoke a feeling of bittersweet nostalgia- “I’m helplessly waiting, clocking the days of my innocent youth, oh I’m hopelessly romanticizing everything black and white, all the colors seem dark in the night, I need a new dream to get by on.” Darling shares, “I wanted to put a new twist on the original production and arrangement, so I locked myself in the studio and being subjected to Covid lockdown, it felt appropriate. I created a new beat, replaced the strings with synths, added guitars, bass, BV’s and then Ian Kelosky mixed it, giving it a fresh sound, where the vocals really pop out.”

BC folk group The Southern Residents share their new bluegrass-tinged single ‘Devyn Gale’ out now on all digital streaming platforms. Listen here

‘Devyn Gale’ is the lead single from The Southern Resident’s debut album Folk Signals, set for release on February 28th. The album was born from the collaboration of Tom Taylor and Adrian Dolan, two seasoned figures in the Canadian music scene. When Tom set out to record his original folk-inspired songs, he needed musicians who could bring his vision to life. Adrian, a multi-instrumentalist and experienced producer, was the ideal partner. Together, they assembled a group of Canada’s finest musicians, each contributing their unique sound to the project. With Tom Taylor on acoustic guitar and vocals and Adrian Dolan playing the fiddle and mandolin, the lineup also includes Scott White on bass from Vancouver Island’s renowned The Bills; Jeanne Tolmie of The Luckies, adding rich vocal harmonies; and Shanti Bremer from The Sweet Lowdown, whose banjo adds a traditional bluegrass touch. Victoria’s Daniel Lapp, an acclaimed fiddler and multi-instrumentalist, brings his talents to the twin fiddle tunes, while David Hughes of She Stole My Beer and The Radio Grande plays the Dobro.

With so many BC musicians involved in The Southern Residents project, it comes as no surprise that Folk Signals is an album with a focus on British Columbia based songs that cover topics from across the province. The first single ‘Devyn Gale’ addresses the risk that comes with the increasing frequency of wildfires in BC due to climate change.

“‘Devyn Gale’ is about a Wildland Firefighter who died fighting a fire outside Revelstoke in July 2023,” says Tom Taylor. “I was heartbroken after reading the story on CBC and thought Devyn needed a folk song to celebrate her, and to mark the sacrifice that she, and other brave men and women have made to protect Canadian communities in what is an increasingly dangerous environment for forest fires.”‘Devyn Gale’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide.

Celebrating 20 years of trailblazing releases, Dirtybird Records is kicking off its anniversary with a brand new single ‘Check My Brain’ from Miami-based duo Black V Neck out now.

Referencing their 2019 Dirtybird-released ‘Sex, Drugs, Alcohol’, ‘Check My Brain’ is a modern approach to Black V Neck’s eccentric sound. The track snakes its way through tech-heavy builds and deep house breaks, boasting all the trademarks of a Dirtybird classic with its bombastic energy and stimulating sound design. Fueled by rowdy rhythms and Ian’s playful AI-manipulated vocals, ‘Check My Brain’ is a nonstop heater that’s sure to make the rounds this festival season.

“We felt we had to go back to our roots and this type of record is a mix of our bouncy basslines, catchy hooks, with a twist of freshness on the breakdown. We couldn’t think of a better label than Dirtybird which encompasses those three things.” – Black V Neck

Asphodels, the seventh studio album from The Veils, was recorded live to tape over five days at Roundhead Studios in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Veils debut album The Runaway Found turned 20 last year which provided lead singer/songwriter Finn Andrews with a healthy dose of existential dread.

“I feel as though this album is the end result of a now disconcertingly long career in music,” says lead singer and songwriter Finn Andrews. “I think after your 7th album, much like turning 40, you should really just stop counting. I’ve learned a lot along the way, which I suppose is the whole point, and I’ve really distilled it all into these 9 songs. As always, I really just write about love and death – it’s a compulsion – and that is once again the case here. But I feel as though I’ve never been able to express this stuff rattling about in my brain quite as directly until now. I have rarely felt proud of anything I’ve made for very long, but this one feels different. It’s built on a strong foundation I think.”

The album takes its name from the Ancient Greek flower of the Underworld, and lyrically, Andrews draws more from the great poets than he does from the well of more traditional rock and roll songwriters.

“I lack the discipline to be a poet, so songwriting has always felt like the right place for me. But poets like Lorca, Ted Hughes and Louis MacNeice have all influenced my songwriting a great deal. It’s in writing and then singing these words that I feel most useful in the world I suppose.”

The collaboration between Andrews and string arranger Victoria Kelly is a central aspect of the record, and as with the band’s previous album …And Out Of The Void Came Love, Kelly plays an integral role in bringing the songs to life.

Andrews says “I really wanted the string arrangements to behave like another member of the band. We even fleshed the character out, like an actor playing a role. It’s this collaboration with Vic that is really at the center of this record I think.”

Untitld and jordnmoody have teamed up for a new single ‘Neon Circus’ out now via HypnoVizion. ‘Neon Circus’ marks both Untitld and jordnmoody’s debut on Rezz’s label imprint.

Untitld and jordnmoody have redefined the limits of minimal bass and trap with ‘Neon Circus’. Grimy basslines and frigid drum patterns lay the groundwork for eerie melodies and sharp vocal chops as Untitld and jordnmoody create the perfect backdrop for Las Vegas’ vibrant luminescence. Inspired by the city’s chaotic synesthesia, ‘Neon Circus’ is an irradiant addition to HypnoVizion’s growing catalog.

“Since moving to Las Vegas last year, I’ve been drawing inspiration from the city. I wanted to encapsulate the juxtaposition of new and old. The neon lights and visual aesthetic that draws people’s attention to Vegas really connected with me in the sense that musically we are at the point where the fusion of music old and new is as connected as it’s ever been.

As I was writing this tune, I went back to the roots of my project and focused on attention to detail in the low end of the sonic spectrum and some playful rhythm. I knew it needed more and felt that jordnmoody would be the perfect person to give it some flair. He did just that and filled things out beautifully. Now that it’s finished this track feels like the first in the next generation of the Untitld project; a perfect culmination of the past, present, and future.”  – Untitld

“Untitld and I have been homies for a while and have played a ton of shows together. HypnoVizion is the perfect launchpad for our first official release together.” – jordnmoody

Madeline Hawthorne’s new song  “Ghost in a Shell” was inspired by close friends going through difficult breakups and was penned together with her husband, during a short break in her touring schedule  “The song puts you in a dream-like state,” she says,.  It also harkens back to 70’s era pop, rock and folk recordings. I thoroughly enjoyed producing this track, and I hope you enjoy listening.”

“Ghost in a Shell follows 2024’s release Tales From Late Nights & Long Drives produced by the famed Ryan Hadlock (Zach Bryan, The Lumineers,  Vance Joy) and recorded at Bear Creek Studios near Seattle, WA.   The album recieved wide praise from outlets including Whiskeyriff,  No Depression,  RelixAmericana HighwaysMAGNET and more.

The time has come. Internationally acclaimed artist Marla Mase has dropped her remastered single, “8:30 (Remastered 2025),” now streaming on all platforms. This new release sets the stage for her ninth studio album, Infinite They Went, arriving January 31, 2025, via True Groove Records.

Mase’s satirical wit shines in this retro French pop-inspired track, complete with lush strings, harp glissandos and a sultry sax solo. Written during the peak of the 2020 pandemic, the song captures the surreal energy of masked, isolated city dwellers. Its music video, shot in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park and produced by William Murray, features Mase as a quirky character draped in festive burnt orange taffeta, surrounded by lemons, wine, and hand sanitizer while enjoying a day in the park observing everything around her.

“8:30 is a love letter to Fort Greene Park and the summer of 2020,” Mase explains. “The park became my sanctuary. I’d sit alone, take off my mask, and let the anxiety melt away. Despite the talk of ‘New York being dead,’ Brooklyn was vibrantly alive. We came together like never before. It was magical.”

The single is the third release from Infinite They Went, a collection of remastered tracks produced by James Dellatacoma (Bill Laswell, Herbie Hancock) and Tomás Doncker (Bootsy Collins, Patti Smith). The album spans genres, blending hard-hitting rock, 70s disco, French pop, 90s punk, and grunge-inspired anthems. It captures Mase’s fearless, genre-defying essence.

Mase’s artistry has earned comparisons to legends like Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Frank Zappa, and Iggy Pop. As HuffPost puts it, her sound is “a little tribal, a little rock, a little jazzy, a little bluesy, a little funky, but most of all cathartic.”

Stream “8:30 (Remastered 2025)” now, and mark your calendars for the release of Infinite They Went on January 31, 2025. Watch the “8:30” music video and explore more at MarlaMase.com.

Olie Beckett is a 14-year-old artist with an unwavering passion for music, a love that has been with him for as long as he can remember. His journey into music began after hearing Marshmello spin, sparking his dream of becoming a DJ. Growing up, music was a constant presence in his life, from the tracks his dad played in his radio office to the melodies his mom would hum around the house. These early influences ignited his passion to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter and create a sound all his own.

At the beginning of his musical path, Olie dove in headfirst. He auditioned for a national choir, took vocal lessons, and performed at his local church. His vocal teacher, Melissa, with her background in musical theater, played a significant role in shaping his artistic style, introducing him to the dramatic power of performance. Olie also worked closely with Mr. B, a dedicated music coach, who taught him the essentials of music composition and professional tools like Logic Pro X. Melissa’s theatrical influence and Mr. B’s technical expertise have helped Olie develop a unique and versatile approach to creating and performing his music.

Olie’s creative process truly came alive when he began composing on the piano, and eventually, on the computer. He quickly fell in love with every element of songwriting and production, becoming fully immersed in his craft. Now, he handles every aspect of his music, from writing the lyrics to composing the instrumentation and delivering the vocals. He knew he was destined for this when he realized how deeply he loved the entire process.

Today, music occupies nearly every part of Olie’s life. He admits that it can be hard to focus on school when all he wants to do is write songs and sing. As he’s grown, so has his taste in music. He draws inspiration from artists like Harry Styles, Ariana Grande, SZA, and Rosalía. While it’s easy to admire other artists, Olie finds that discovering his own unique voice as an artist is a more complex, but exciting, process. The creative spark truly shines when he blends his own personality with the music he’s making.

When Olie writes a song, everything begins with emotion and inspiration. Once he locks in on the feeling and knows the chords, the rest falls into place. The bassline comes to him naturally, and adding the drums completes the composition. For Olie, songwriting is a sensory experience, combining a taste for music, a sense for lyricism, an ear for melody, and the right touch on an instrument. But the most essential element of all is passion. When everything aligns, that’s when the magic happens.

Blue Pilot is a genre-blurring duo that combines clever songwriting with a psychedelic and sometimes experimental re-interpretation of modern pop culture. Their music reflects current cultural movements, turning popular textures and rhythms into intricate, narrative-driven arrangements. That description may seem academic, but the music isn’t exactly; the band has a sense of humor and a clear taste for pop music that makes their songs accessible and enjoyable.

For songwriter Eric Steininger-Frost and producer Chris Worden, combining genres is more than a novelty; it’s an expression of two artists who grew up at the cross-section between the improvisatory, harmony-obsessed world of jazz and the electronics and aesthetics of modern popular music. The two met as teenagers on opposite sides of a small town big band, with Frost on trumpet and Worden on upright bass. What started as a fun way to escape the confines of their instruments turned into a years-long project searching for ways to combine their wide range of influences.

Across a decade of long-distance collaboration, Blue Pilot released their debut EP Six-Fifty One in 2018 and the album Ulysses, Eliot in 2021. In 2024, the duo relocated to New York City and opened up a studio, where they are painstakingly crafting their newest singles.

Encompassing the garage rock spirit of their influences Sunshine Pony Finger exude youthful passion in their latest release “One More Joke”. Raw and authentic guitars are paired with syncopated drums and rhythmic bass patterns laying the perfect foundation for Oliver and Rosie’s distinctive and emotive vocals. Building a name for themselves through caustic lyrics and ethereal synths the band are building a sizeable fan base of loyal supporters.

Hailing from Medway Towns, at only 17-19 years old Sunshine Pony Finger are taking the industry by storm, with “One More Joke” setting them on an upward trajectory into the rest of 2025.

He has developed a reputation as a true multidisciplinary artist, and his work is known to be fresh and innovative.

Guffchild:

Paris-born creative, artist and producer Aime Simone delivers a powerful remix of his latest single “IN MY BLOOD” – tapping Berlin duo GDA, out 29th of January.

Consisting of Loco Candy (Producer and DJ for artist Makko) and upcoming artist and producer Vigo Blax, GDA are a fast-rising electronic duo coming out of Berlin. “IN MY BLOOD” is an intense and introspective single exploring themes of resilience and inner struggle. Delving into the remix and his experience collaborating with GDA, Aime tells us: “GDA brought the song into an ultra-modern, high energy avant-garde club universe while keeping the melancholic emotion that stays true to the soul of the track, turning it into a chopped up, brutalist Berlin banger.”

Grunge/Shoegaze band Slow Crush have released the powerful new single ‘Cherry’. The latest offering after signing to US label, Pure Noise Records.

Speaking about the new single the band said, “Wistful longing for something fresh and new, creating a stormy and effervescent anthology. Evoking an almost thematic cascade of noise that echoes the end and bursts into new life. ‘Cherry’ feels like the perfect first single. A new, fresh start. ‘Shed your skin’”

Philadelphia-based tastemaker label Julia’s War Recordings is excited to announce Water Seasonan EP by Brazilian-American artist Winter and the Philly electro-lo-fi duo Hooky, arriving on February 14, 2025. To preview the first-time collaboration, lead single “horseshoe” is out now. Today’s single is a wiry guitar-driven track, dripping in Winter’s syrupy vocals, and sprinkled with twinkling drum machines. Its electronic heartbeat passes through the listener like a beloved memory, shimmering with earnest lyrics and a DIY music video to match. Self-directed and filmed last fall in Philadelphia, Samira Winter and Hooky’s Scott Turner and Sam Silbert each took turns filming as they wandered through John Heinz Park and the Museum of Modern Art. The result was a blend of candid exploration —a portrait of their friendship and the emotional crossroads they shared, frozen in time.

I took the train to Philly and for a couple of days, we just jammed at Scott’s place for hours,” says Winter about making the “horseshoe” music video. “It was this cool feeling of making new friends, exploring a city and also making art together for the first time. It strangely felt like I had known them forever, even though it was the first time we were hanging out.”
