A new project is underway at Sony Pictures to create a follow-up to the beloved 1997 romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” starring Julia Roberts. The studio has enlisted Celine Song, known for her work on “Materialists” and “Past Lives,” to write the screenplay for the upcoming film. However, she is not currently attached to direct the sequel.
This development follows remarks from Dermot Mulroney, who starred alongside Roberts in the original film, indicating that “there is talk of a sequel,” as reported by the New York Post. Mulroney, promoting his latest Netflix series “The Hunting Wives,” mentioned, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, lawyers were talking,” suggesting the project is still in early stages.
Celine Song recently premiered her second feature, “Materialists,” released by A24 in June. The romantic comedy, featuring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, grossed $50 million worldwide. Her debut film, “Past Lives,” earned $42 million globally and received Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. In addition to her filmmaking, Song is an accomplished playwright and is currently developing an e-sports drama series titled “Damage” for HBO.
The original “My Best Friend’s Wedding” starred Roberts as a food critic who discovers that her close friend—played by Mulroney—is planning to marry someone else. The story revolves around their pact that they would marry each other if neither found love by age 28. When Roberts’ character realizes she’s in love with her friend, she schemes to prevent his wedding. The film also featured Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett and was a major box office success, earning $127 million domestically and ranking as the ninth-highest grossing film of 1997. It received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Musical or Comedy and acting nods for Roberts and Everett, and remains a cherished classic from Roberts’ romantic comedy era. In 2022, Variety listed it among the 100 greatest movies of all time.
