Hollywood stars John Cena and Kevin Hart are set to team up for Netflix’s upcoming action-comedy titled The Leading Man. The project was originally conceived by writers Jon and Erich Hoeber, who previously sold their screenplay Fast & Loose to the streaming giant.
As reported by Deadline, The Leading Man is still in the early development phase. The film will be adapted from a comic book series created by Jeremy Haun and B. Clay Moore. In addition to starring roles, Hart and Cena will also serve as producers, collaborating with a team that includes Luke Kelly-Clyne, Bryan Smiley, Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, Eric Gitter, Peter Schwerin, and Dan Baime. This film is part of Hart’s broader multi-picture deal with Netflix.
The story follows a self-absorbed movie star, played by Cena, who discovers that his co-star and “man in the chair,” portrayed by Hart, is actually an undercover agent. Faced with this revelation, Cena’s character must humble himself and come to terms with the fact that action stars aren’t always true heroes—while also trying to save the world. The official synopsis teases a humorous clash of egos and heroism.
The Leading Man continues Netflix’s ongoing collaboration with both Cena and Hart. Prior to this project, Cena was announced to star in the streamer’s upcoming comedy Little Brother, alongside Emmy-winning comedian Eric André. Meanwhile, Hart recently appeared in last year’s heist film Lift and is slated to star in another Netflix comedy, 72 Hours, with SNL cast member Marcello Hernández.
Currently, Cena is gearing up for the release of Peacemaker Season 2, where he reprises his popular role in the DC universe. The show is scheduled to premiere on August 21, 2025, on HBO Max. Additionally, Cena is set to headline Mattel’s live-action Matchbox movie alongside Jessica Biel.
