Joe Carnahan shares his love for the cop genre, telling Netflix’s Tudum, “I’ve always been a big fan of the cop film.” Known for directing the upcoming action thriller The Rip, Carnahan has also helmed movies like Narc and Copshop. While these films differ significantly from each other, The Rip represents a new direction—an extension of the genre that incorporates real-life elements and a deeply emotional core. A central question runs through the film: Are we the good guys?
Starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, The Rip centers on a team of Miami police officers who stumble upon a stash house containing millions of dollars. As the story unfolds, the trust among the team members begins to unravel, especially once outside forces become aware of the massive seizure. Throughout the film, everything—trust, loyalty, and morality—is called into question.
